April 28, 2018 - Cancers arise by usurping normal controls on cell proliferation and death. Various genomic alterations including gene deletions, or mutations that enhance gene function lead to dysplasias that continue to evolve into cancer. One particular gene, p53, restricts cell proliferation and kills abnormal cells. It is often deleted, mutated, or otherwise weakened in tumor cells by multiple mechanisms. Lozano will discuss how p53 checks tumor cell growth and the ways tumor cells bypass these controls. Lozano represents Class IV.
