This 1940s film titled “Guilty” is an early, scripted driver's education film that spreads awareness around traffic safety rules and the consequences of reckless driving. Presented by the Kansas City Safety Council in cooperation with the Police Department and the division of traffic engineering and produced by The Calvin Co. Kansas City, Missouri, the film tells the story of Bill Hardaway - a young man with a blasé attitude towards road safety. One day Bill is taken to court for his reckless driving, from there begins a parallel story of what could happen if Bill does not change his ways. The film features Harry Sackett as Bill Hardaway, Larry Sherwood as Ned Cummings, Betty Jo Le Vec as Ann, Billie Cook as Mickey, and Everett Kemp as the judge. Alongside the cast, the crew of the film includes screenwriter WM.G. Wilson, photographer Harry Philpott, Ralph C. Meyn, Bert Buhrman, WM.Simmons, Lloyd Thompson, and director Forrest O. Calvin.

Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous KZbin users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do. Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films! Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/PeriscopeFilm Even a really tiny contribution can make a difference.

Maybe I'm looking from a 2022 perspective, but I don't think I'd have been able to sit through this one even then. On the one hand, it's a product of it's time, but it just also seems it was produced by a group who only knew how to talk AT people and not to.

The superb production qualities, casting, acting and stunning color marks this film as perhaps Missouri's finest accomplishment. Is this the finest film production that the US has ever made? You be the judge. Perhaps it is #2, I think 'Reefer Madness' just might edge it out. Or mebbe I'm just wasted? Like the man says, don't pull a boner! That's good advice when your dealing with a pissed off cop, IMO.
