I'm a somewhat new film critic and my god, I wish I had your gift of gab. The way you are able to articulate your feelings about a film on-screen without a script is beyond me or what any critic on KZbin can do. I hope you know that you are an inspiration to me and many others. As far as I'm concerned, you and Armond White (I know I'm going to get flak for that choice but I think his writing is brilliant whether you agree with him or not) are the best critics working today.

Thanks Maggie. I've always had a theory that you have to have bad taste in order to have good taste. That is if a person can't admit that some of the things they like are simply pop fluff or purely trash their other opinions can't be trusted. Someone who thinks everything they love is sacred is someone I totally distrust.
@Suite_annamite2 жыл бұрын
You've perfectly described a notion that the French now call the "taste for the tacky" (le goût du moche): it's when someone consciously and deliberately likes something that others of "better taste" would never even consider; but because it is based on that person's natural inclinations, their personal taste for those things is "pure" and therefore isn't socially nor narcissistically motivated. This kind of ironic, self-awareness is the latest artistic trend here in the French part of Canada, where both artists and normal folk alike try to "beautify" normal, everyday objects that would otherwise be "ugly". And this includes making and selling beautified ugly objects and art. Whether or not this is another kind of perpetuating "naive art" or a cynical ploy to capitalize on everyone's fickle preferences is up for debate. And that also includes watching "bad movies", and looking on the bright side, by giving them a new spin. Americans already had their way of doing all that with spray-painting "nice graffiti".

I haven't watched the movie Jackass. This kind of movie just repels me... maybe because I am a culture-spoiled European(?). It would be interesting to explore what the liking of such a movie signifies from a sociological perspective. It reminds me of some initiation ritual of a native culture, where the experience of going to and trespassing your physical and emotional limits defines the transition into adulthood. The bonding element within the group is rather interesting, also acting as an argument that there is a connection.

Twilight has become a wonderful film to talk about when it comes to the laugh-inducing ways Hollywood cinema went wrong. Actors like Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Reaser and even Anna Kendrick were still at a point in their careers where they just needed the work. AND IT SHOWS. Combine this with Catherine Hardwicke, who started her feature-film directing with 2003's "Thirteen" and seemed to have her finger on the pulse of contemporary youth ... but was also finding that quality projects weren't being offered to her. Hardwicke once referred to the result as the "sweetened condensed milk version" of what Stephenie Meyer wrote. Combine this with the marketing choices made by Summit Entertainment, which wanted to be taken seriously as a distributor (LMAO) (they released this 2 months after buying the rights to Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker). I honestly consider the first film watchable. Granted it's been 12 years since I last saw it, but the story beats still stick in my memory for the way they achieved a reasonable degree of non-stupidity.

@@: "Beautiful people struggle in life ... and I think it can be, you know, very lonely." Another thing I think people don't get is that beautiful people are actually in solidarity with one another, and are never actually envious of one another. It's actually peripheral people in their lives who try to stoke up conflict: *we've all seen the ugly duckling trying to hang out with the group of swans, and try to be their gate-keeper!*
@bigneon_glitter2 жыл бұрын
I would rephrase the _Star Trek_ opinion to say that _TMP_ is the _"Vertigo"_ of the franchise but I stick by it. Both films are cinematically immersive slow boil mysteries that play out with long, drawn out sequences of discovery supported by lush visuals & orchestration. Both are simple stories with deceptively complex narratives told almost entirely through internal characterizations that are open to interpretation. The protagonists are figures driven by deep emotional obsession & longing, dwarfed by unknowable, untouchable mysteries in which they have no control. Both films are examples of modern Gothic Horror.

It's possible that the term was originally a mistranslation from some kind of Latin-derived language: like Italian or French or something, where a word for "delight" or "delicious" is similar to a word for "crime" or "evil deed". Then maybe the words later became "guilty" and "pleasure" in English, to give them a louder ring. But since the original intent no longer applied in English, it just became a nonsense saying that makes people misunderstand it.

For me it would have to be Damian Chappa's "El Padrino-The Latin Godfather." If you've seen blood in blood out well I'd like to think of it like an unofficial spiritual sequel and oh boy it is bad. Its convoluted, far too long and suffers from a very low budget. At times it seems there were long breaks in between production so it has sequence and continuity issues. Some scenes look like they were filmed in Damian Chappa's house. For all it's flaws it actually has memorable performances. Most notably Gary Busey and Jennifer Tilly. Gary Buesy is actual very good but he really comes off as crazy which lends itself to the role and it even seems like the production used this towards his character. Jennifer Tilly is definitely worth mentioning she is just so bad to the point of hilarity but her performance wears out it's welcome very quickly. One of the things I enjoy is the supporting cast and even background characters. The actors are lesser known or amateur undiscovered actors but you can tell some of them put forth the effort in their performance. The blood gang leader in the prison scenes and a very out of place scene with a undercover cop character who I could almost swear the actor is Christopher Walken's lost love child. The movie is bad but I think it's possible to instruct a short term film making course on it. You can definitely play a drinking game with this movie.

My BIGGEST guilty pleasures are Dan Aykroyd's "Nothing But Trouble", and Stephen King's "Maximum Overdrive". Two over-the-top misfires from celebrity one-time directors. I consider a "guilty pleasure" something I'm drawn to but not for reasons I can intellectually defend. I love to watch "Room For One More" (aka "The Easy Way") with Cary Grant and Betsy Drake but I would be hard pressed to defend this episodic, situation comedy-like entertainment as a film of merit. I didn't know "Jackass" was a movie and I watched the movie. It's like comedy porn that is ultimately unmemorable and pointless (but I'm a guy and I won't deny my friends and I did a lot of similar stupid shit growing up- it's just that like facebook I can't imagine anyone would be interested that crap. I may be wrong about people being interested- but not about it being crap.)

Pre-code films, giallo films, exploitation films, non-PC films in the past, etc. Look for "sex hygiene films" in the 30s-50s, or the 1971 film "Immoral Tales" directed by Walerian Borowczyk, and you'll get an eyeful. In other words, I consider guilty pleasure films to be those largely unseen or unknown by the public, but whose salacious nature appeals to some people. Some of the titles mentioned here such as Star Trek, Twilight, Fifty Shades, etc. are too mainstream and widely seen. If everyone has seen them, then everyone is guilty, which means no one is.

Wild Things (1998) dir by John McNaughton is one for me. That whole ending where the real culprit was revealed, only for it to be a red herring and the actual culprit was revealed, and I think this happens for like 3 times, is so shameless and I adore it. It's as if it's scooby doo on steroids. Also, doesn't hurt that some of the most attractive actors/actresses are a part of this film, and I actually kinda find the acting decent in that film, though it's to be expected considering Kevin Bacon, Matt Dillon, and Bill Murray are decent actors, with the latter adding just the right amount of dry humor to this hilariously weird movie where it takes itself so seriously in the first half only for it to spiral out of control towards the end.

Star Trek the Motionless Picture is boring, lame, and an epic film. Some of my favorite films of all time are flawed. Greystoke is an English drawing room film with a monkey-man, it's awesome! Krull sucks and it's great; Dragonslayer, Tron, the Last Starfighter. The films that really try and, well, just fall short are the BEST.
