How to Zipline a tree down.

Here remove a big nasty Maple and i demonstrate how to Zipline a tree down. Also known as Speedlining.

Thanks for making & posting this limb zip-line video ! I remember watching a fellow zip-line an evergreen using a battery operated saw. He got the canopy all zip-lined down and his battery ran out so he had to finish the tree with a topper chainsaw. I just had to get myself a battery chainsaw. You might get you one for your work. It had a 10" bar and wasn't heavy at all. Much less tiring !

I like the way your ground guys made a Y at the end with a prussik and a second line. As the short log steamed into the landing zone, the carabiner was snagged by the Y in the rope, and neither guy was in the bowling lane.

First time I've seen that technique. I'll give it 100% approval and 100% approval for the collar below the cut to keep the tree from splitting. I recall an old movie in the last forties in which a lumberjack was topping a big fir and the tree split which caused the man's chest to be crushed between the tree and his climbing loop. I used my novice terms because I don't know arborist terms.

Zip lining branches are awesome! We use to use that technique to get the branches Over a fence or barrier to get it closer to the chipper. Makes it very easy for groundsman .

If I may Id like to humbly share something I was lucky enough to learn from... in the interest of us all working efficiently and above all getting home safely. Wont go into too much detail but big tree long day almost finished went a bit too big. Had my groundie holding the line and it pulled him in and the piece very nearly hit him....Im ashamed to say Im sure it would have killed him! I fkd up big time so I now always insist on a belay of the rope at the anchor point then the groundie can stand off-line. Also means you can add tension when you need it or slack to drop the pieces once you clear the obstacles and its much stronger so you can go bigger(provided you have put a back tie in to counter the lateral loading) Nice work mate, stay safe up there boys.

You could easily rig a portawrap to the chipper or a tree to be used as an anchor for larger logs and limbs.

@Deplorable Centrist the rope has to be held taught for the limbs to be able to slide down. Generally you don't just drop shit in the street, its not the customers property. Usually the person who hired you is the only property you are supposed to be on.

@Deplorable Centrist Might have made it a bit unclear....The guy holding the rope was in line with the trajectory of the piece, by belay I mean change the angle with either a pulley or just going round a lamp post...just so the rope man is not in line. also the deflection of the rope gives more friction and control and probably a better view of things. I would have dropped it in the street had it been over the street but in short, it wasn't.

Remember Kinetic energy is E = M v^2. a heavier mass going slower has the same energy as a small mass going faster.

The point is the smaller ones goes faster, so it's the one you're more likely to take in the face if you're not paying attention

Also remember that your jaw is gonna disintegrate by small pieces just as well as by big pieces. Just faster by small pieces.

Yeah I figure if the sizes are a certain weight that the ground man can hold the piece incoming , but an anchor point and side line to tension would be safer. I've never used this method. I will try it soon

I’m learning a ton from you guys. I’m a lineman in California with a large utility that will remain nameless. If we could get a tree crew on our line clearances with half Of your knowledge it would be awesome! Two questions. I’m trimming my giant cypress trees and want to know if I could zip line branches without much ground help? I was thinking about driving a digging bar in the dirt and clove hitching the zip to it then using a running bowline to the main trunk after it hits a block. I figure I can move the line with the bowline to get to different branches. My dad will be on the ground but he’s 68. Second question how do you guys get the sap off? I have seen Jed with more sap on his hands than I thought humanly possible😂

Looks like the jacket on your climbing line is starting to deteriorate. I had one just like it and the jacket just went all to pieces after a few months, never saw anything like it. Sterling sent me some of their Scion to replace it but not impressed. Great vid! I love zip lining.

I'm curious about the guys holding the line at the bottom wouldn't it put less stress on them if you had your line in a snatch block connected to something like a pickup hitch. I would think it would still give the climber freedom to move the line but then all the stress would be misdirected into the truck rather then ground guys.

Male sure your guys always are aware of the lines your ropes ,if one gets tangled in a limb and goes into that chipper it will pull you out of the tree or even crush you against it or its limbs or worse case out of the tree and into the chipper and it all happens faster then the blink of an eye ! It has happened to some extent

I don't know how this could be faster!. You're literally taking every little branch at a time. I would have taken that entire front section and fell the entire section. And my Bobcat would have grabbed It and picked it up and shoved the whole thing right into our chipper. I take big sections at a time. Pick them up and shove them right in the chipper. I don't see a point to knit pick this tree apart. All I really see is just another way of doing a job which there's nothing wrong with but taking out big sections at a time would be more Beneficial time wise

Camera discipline, it’s the number one job of a cameraman. First have your subject in the frame. Second part is camera stability. Do not make rapid movements, twist or shake your camera. When your audience has to stop watching due to induced motion sickness from poor namera stability you have lost the whole point of the video. I think you have good subject matter. You have a good passion for the subject. Just work on camera discipline.
