Guinea pig talk 105: the first baby guinea pigs!

This week more holiday guests went home and so it is slowly becoming a bit quieter in the shelter. Well, not completely. In order to create extra space during the summer holidays, there were still forty shelter guinea pigs at home. They were pampered Aussie style while they were having their holiday at home, while the volunteers and employees spoiled the other guinea pigs and of course the holiday guinea pigs. Fortunately, the small migration back to the shelter happened quite quickly.
Last week I told all about the group of eleven guinea pigs that had been given up, and most of them seemed to be pregnant. Although they are still very scared, the good care of our volunteer team turned out to be successful: the guinea pigs had gained about eighty to two hundred grams in one week! We will continue to keep a close eye on them, weigh them and provide them with vegetables, our food and our herb mixes to continue this upward trend. In the meantime, we are of course also very curious about the little ones that we can expect. Sunday morning we received birth news: Ceder was the proud mom of two big and above all very healthy baby males! Because mother and babies are doing well and know how to get along with the rest, they will stay with the other sows in the group for now. That is better for the mother, so that she has support from her conspecifics. The baby’s are named Oakley and Parsley and will be provided with a new owner via our waiting list. And Snow and Monsoon also finally found a new golden home! Up until now that has not been easy because they had long hair and were not that young anymore. Too bad, because their character was fantastic and they got along very well with each other. After months of searching, their ideal owner finally came in.
Because we are still recovering from the holiday rush, we were reserved to take in new guinea pigs for a while. However, a number of adoptions were planned, so Puk and Muk were finally able to move. Castrated male Gijs managed to seduce a nice lady and our Ron, castrated male with its own manual, suddenly knew how to behave towards both guinea pig lady and his new owner.
And finally, with this summer weather, we show our flower mix! Of course, this mix is loaded with different types of flowers, including marigolds and hibiscus, but your animals can also enjoy amongst others dill and parsley stems.
