We had guineas on our farm what I was a kid. It wasn't unusual to see them out in the fields sometimes over a mile away but they always came back in the evening to roost in the implement shed. Then one year the flock slowly started to thin out until there were no more. We think hawks or coyotes killed them all.
@_s8273 жыл бұрын
yeah, my own experience is that you have to have a flock big enough that it withstands the attrition. They might have good eyesight and be able to fly high up into trees, but predators still get them pretty easily if there aren't enough of them to keep up the population.

Yeah they're no better at deterring snakes than chickens really. The right rooster will drive a snake away but many won't - the same is true for male guinea fowl. But they're nice birds to have around even if they are messy and noisy and their eggs are lovely.

But when I got closer I saw it was about a three to four-foot alligator in my driveway! The best reason is they eat the fleas and ticks in the area. They eat some of the invasive bugs, like Japanese beetles, which leaves us more raspberries in the fall. I'm not sure they really are great at snake deterrence, but better than our chickens who do nothing.

They make different noises, but I never use that. I just know by which ones lay eggs. Our guineas sleep in the top of our peach tree at night, feed themselves in the summer, but fed some oats in the winter. They raise their own young without any interference from us. We get to enjoy less bad bugs (flea/tick/worm larva/june bugs/Japanese beetles. ) I can't imagine our farm without them.

I use to have three now only one left Dot the head leader. The only one who won’t just go up to anyone. Polka and Little Dot got stolen bc they would actually let people hold them. Had to report for jury duty as soon as I got home I knew they were gone bc they weren’t at their normal place for every time I left. Whenever they could hear my truck pulling up they would come running up to greet me. Still missing them two babies bad!! Scared to get another one of fear someone else will nab the next one I raise from chics. But love my Dot!!

Our guineas aren't that friendly. We did have a wave of predators in the fall, eagle, horned owl, and fox. We are down to just 2 adults guineas. These have been living independent raising their own for 5 years now, with just an occasional feeding. I was worried they were going to go extinct, but I think they have a nest now. So, there's hope. We had 11 adults in the fall.

@theriverschool8223 жыл бұрын
They could like chickens could, but they tend to eat small bugs and grass seeds. They love to eat ticks and fleas or follow me when I cut the grass to eat the little bugs and tiny grasshoppers that just out. They are excellent for tick control. We hardly have any near our house and our livestock have less fleas since we added guineas. I think they make the goats have less worms too, by eating the worms in their larval state. I love guineas. The wild pig have just found our area are making it hard to nest on the ground anymore.

But they sure get loud for other random non-threatening occurrences

They did an amazing job at keeping the ticks away. We lost the last guinea 3 years ago, the the tick count finally started going back to normal last summer. I need to get some more. They also survived in the wild without any care for about 8 years and raised their own babies, until wild pigs came into the area and made ground nesting impossible. We only bought baby guineas once and got 8 years of tick protection.

@theriverschool8227 ай бұрын
I believe they alerted me to it originally, then moved away and I brought their attention back, but that was so long ago I can't remember the details. When I posted this, it was the only video that showed the real way guineas interact with snakes. They prefer to bluff/scare off a snake, rather than a fight.
