So this was one we had lined up for a while - so many people say they'd never drink Guinness out of a can - but is it psychological or is there actually a big difference? We decided to carry out a blind taste test to see.
We also tested a single-pour against a 2-part pour to see if there was any difference.
Go easy on the Guru after seeing the results 🤣

I think one of the things this experiment shows is how important the beautiful look of a pint of Guinness is to the overall enjoyment.

Getting the barman to put a head literally invalidated the entire test. Mixing the keg with the can. Madness.

Single pour in a straight glass in my local. The can shouldn't have been topped from the tap, the others should have been left short. Looking forward to my own blind test soon!

Great video except for the topping up of the can with the tap. Inverted can pour - have heard of it and using it for last 6 months - great result !! Next test - comparing 500ml floating widget can and 470ml can with fixed widget

I've always heard a full hard drop with the can. Never saw the inverted glass way before, but it'll add a little "flair" for the first few! Not chancing it after my fourth...

Im so glad as in Canada we get the Irish Cans! I swear it tastes much better than a pint here and those kegs are brewed in Canada!

That is exactly the way we pour the cans in Boston Massachusetts USA. We were stuck drinking cans for a while because of the COVID issues

Yes, somebody told me about that pour at the start of lockdown last year and now it’s our go to can pour - cans in Australia are 440ml so shite anyway

I’ve never actually thought to invert the glass the flip but I’ve always done a hard pour with a straight flipped can then raise as it pours, something I am 99% sure I have seen online from a guy from Guinness

Interesting stuff lads. My regular pub when I lived in Glasgow used to just knock the Guinness out in a single pour into jug glasses, and it was still the best pint in town, so it does seem the double pour is a pretty minor factor compared to some of the other elements. Keep up the good work.

I still value your opinion... perhaps more so now. Thanks for the honesty. I've never been to Ireland/UK to try the straight dope... But I love a good Guinness and usually have to settle for a can or dirty American pour...

Try again, except only fill the single pour and standard pint to the same level of the can. I think putting the head on the can is a curveball

The double pour is a hangover from the time they mixed fresh stout with old stout in the bar years ago. There’s absolutely no requirement for the double pour nowadays.

The only way to get a cream head/shtick is to let the nitrogen settle before doming the head, you get a short head if you straight pour and thats not the Guinness way

Not sure about the single pour compared to the standard pour; I’m guessing by the name I understand, but I only had a two part pour anywhere I traveled on the Isle. It ‘‘twas foooking amazing every time! Waiting for that pour to settle, then topped up, focused the mind in anticipation - well worth the wait! Back in the states, I couldn’t drink Guinness for a number of months. Lately I’ve found the can to be decent. Decent is a subjective term, but it’s still a Guinness!

That can pour is (I believe) the correct way to pour Guinness from a can. I have heard that before but I was quite drunk from the stuff so I can't quite remember who said it 🤣

It would normally make sense that the can "could" taste better as its in a controlled environment.... meaning, it's how it's meant to be. Where a tap pour can be better... or terrible, there are other varibles can can change the taste outside the companies control.....

7:30. I've also watched the Guinness Master Brewer explain how to pour the can..... I do it EXACTLY as you did it. Put the glass on top, flip it over and lift leaving a small gap to build the head. I have done it both ways and can't tell a difference. Quality beer is quality beer.... I could probably SHOOT it into a glass with a beer cannon and it'll taste great :D

this was fun, but please do it again in another pub (with known great Guinness) and this time do NOT ask the bar man to 'top them off', as that will change the taste of the can version at least, you can always top up the can pint with some from a second can...

As a keen Guinness can drinker I stumbled across something that you may find interesting. If you leave your can(s) in the freezer, possibly cos you've drunk too many of them and moved onto the rum, put them back in the fridge to thaw the next day. They don't burst or anything, but when you get round to drinking them, they tend to have more body, more like a pub pint. Maybe give them half an hour in the freezer again before you spark them open. Try it🙂

I pour cans onto the harp of the glass, up to around 60% then stand for around 1 minute and complete the pour with the glass standing where I left it.

I always pour into the harp it helps air-rate the pour. Just pour the can it’s all bull shit really lol. I find the can stuff spot on. Some pub stuff can be awful especially poured by a youngster.

At what temperature should I be drinking the can? Cold from the fridge? Let it sit out a little to be not quite as cold? Does it matter?

Personal preference. I like a really cold stout but there’s a comfort in a less cold pint, particularly when chasing it with a shot of whiskey. The latter strategy will severely shorten one’s evening, however! 🤣 While we’re on the topic… storing your cans upright for several hours before use is crucial, IMO. Guinness recommend three hours AFAIK but I tend to store cans in the fridge and just leave them there until required (days). Limit movement of the can as much as possible to give the head the best outcome. Nitrosurge head is far better than widget can but taste still lacking the body one gets from a good draught pint.

from what i’ve seen, and in this video, is that the single pour gives a slightly bigger head, and therefore perhaps, holds in more flavour? i do think that the double pour thing doesn’t apply anymore

Aye the Upside down Can is the way, Been doin it that way for 10 years, its how I taught also my Uncle Jack up in Cork, he passed away 6 months later (may he Rest in Peace) but he had been Pouring Guiness from the Can as a Slow Pour for maybe 30 years and instantly changed. It has to be real cold aswell for best results and yet even better with a Pint Sized Can. --- I will be honest when yee started pouring that first can I was Screaming at the Screen "NOOOOOOOO WHAT ARE YEE DOIN, GUINESS GURU?? My ARSE!!!". But aye yee redeemed yourselves and the world is good again. -- I do tink the Can's are plenty good (Better if they have the Widget) but they are very debatable, I think they're fine I jsut dont drink em in the Pub like, but at home, i'll be putting 10 away before bed, no problems haha. Tanks for the content there Lads, keep it up

tip can upside down trap Guiness in top of can for about 15 seconds let it start to settle do that twice no large bubbles perfect pint every time.

That's exactly how I do the pour from a can. It works for most "widget" cans, like Boddingtons for instance.

When you pour a Guinness just pour it straight in to the glass. Turn the can upside down and just let it go. I promise you right now that it won't overflow.

There’s no difference in single and double pour. It’s just a marketing ploy. Years ago when bars mixed fresh stout with old stout there was every requirement of the double pour. Not now.

That blindfold was not working at all on that barman…he points at all the glasses he believes things are and he perfectly places the standard pint back in its formation without being careful or hitting anything else 🤣 good video though 👍🏻

So the setting, and visual elements of a pint are clearly far more important than variations in taste. I’d like to see this comparison done with a pint in one of the 9.x rated pubs in Dublin. Might be tricky to pull that off though! 4 pints, 2 of em cans, 2 of em ‘gold standard’ pints.

No doubt, one’s mood plays a part but I’m happy to throw down the gauntlet and say, I’d tell a can apart a proper pint so long as the pint is from a bar known for its quality stout. The Nitrosurge is, visually, a better pint than the widget can but lacks the depth of flavour from a draught pint, IMHO.

Greg McGarry see I’m torn. I’ve always been sceptical of variance in kegged beers. Yeah there are some things that are down to the bar (lines, age of keg), but still not convinced about some pints being SO much different than others
