Guinness Cavaliers- Lord Melody's "Mas" ( T&T Steelband Panorama winners 1965)

Guinness Cavaliers Steel Orchestra created steelband history when they became the first "south' band to win the T&T National Steelband Panorama with this Lennox "Bobby" Mohamed arrangement of Lord Melody's "Mas".
This abbreviated 45 rpm recording is slower than the panorama performance, but it still has that Cavaliers sound.
It is the only recording that I'm aware of.

Love my pan music. From the days when being a pianist we were tagged as vagabonds, hooligans, and everything horrible. Granted some pan men fought a lot, but I’m grateful for everyone of us who stayed he course. Look where the steel pan is today. It brings me to tears

"where pan is today" is nowhere...dead in the water...at a standstill, a mere curiousity on the world stage. And that is all because of the ignorant panmen who attacked and Bertie Marshall's Hilanders steelband and destroyed their pans, especially the amplified pans, because they were they were afraid of the future of the pan as an amplified instrument capable of taking its place on he world stage. They destroyed the future of pan because they wanted 120 men to continue to do what 10 could do with amplification. They succeeded and doomed pan to relative irrelevance because of the logistics of trying to transport a 100+ member band with 300+ unwieldly instruments on a world tour. That is the reality and it brings me to tears....that the only musical instrument invented in the 20th century remains a barely relevant novelty owing to the stupidity of panmen. Panmen really are the worst thing to happen to pan.

@@dennisleslie8962 An unfortunate event, sure. But the future of pan is still very bright. Small 10 person bands to large 100+ member bands can be found in many areas in the world, not just T&T...many people outside of T&T including myself are dedicated and inspired to spread both the history and beautiful music of the steel pan!

Many thanks for posting this......long overdue....."Water in meh eyes and ah cyar cry".......I can still visualize "Cavaliers" coming down the track.....everyone left what they were doing and rush to the railings of the race track just to hear this band.....this performance has stayed with me forever.....love it.....Junior Leiba

l was 10years old. In those days, I was not involved in pan. It was only in later years when I got involved in music and steel panther that I was able to appreciate this arrangement. Thanks Bobby.

Thanks a million, I've been searching so long for this recording. I remember Carnival Tuesday 1965 in San Fernando very clearly and that sound. Insha, you are so correct, from the changing of keys to the classical endings two years later, which is still used today, he surely has changed pan.
