When I first saw Knopfler on a solo tour in 2001 this was the opening number with a slightly stripped back band. It was utterly immense. By then he was using a Les Paul but that Pensa Suhr he used in the video gave some killer tones.

I enjoy your appreciation of Mark Knopfler's guitar playing, and this performance is one I've never seen. Mark really lets loose here with some gorgeous and powerful guitar. And that percussionist who comes in to solo at one point is outstanding. Wow. "Calling Elvis," as you note, has a spare lyric line and has its mood created by the amazing melodic guitar sounds.

This video was recorded in De Kuip, Rotterdam, in The Netherlands. I was 17 at that time and it was my first live concert. And I was blown away. Imagine this was just the opening song of the show. It just kept getting better! If you haven't already you should really listen to Private Investigations and Brothers In Arms from this show. Pure magic!

The Bremen Open Air of this tour was my very first concert ever. I was 14 and back in those days, you had no chance of sneaking into KZbin videos to gain an idea of how a concert will be. Standing almost in the front row (yeah!) really gave me a blast. Opening the concert with this tremendous full power force. I experienced loads of concerts where the FOS needed two or three songs to get things working. However, this has never ever been an issue at any Mark Knopfler concerts. Both musicians and technicians have always been on the spot when the show began. What you also only see rarely is this huge variety in dynamics. There are longer quiet pieces in this song than these day's tiktok songs last in total...

Brilliant. And just think, this isn’t like a highlight or high point of the concert - this was the opening number... I saw them three times on this tour in London, absolutely brilliant every time. I still rank Alchemy above this, but On The Night is a fantastic live album/video with brilliant songs and brilliant performances. Romeo And Juliet, Brothers In Arms, On Every Street, You And Your Friend (my favourite probably), this one Calling Elvis, Heavy Fuel - it’s all brilliant and get better every time you hear it! This version of Calling Elvis was in the Netherlands, De Kuip football stadium in Rotterdam. I'm sitting here in the audience with my wife. The tour was called On the night, it is and remains the best concert I have ever seen. Dire Straits was a great band, too bad they will never get back together.

In England we would go home after the pubs closed and sit around listening to music, smoking joints, talking and laughing, just enjoying each other's company and the joy of discovering new artists and music. My friend Michael (r.i.p.brother.) was manager of the Virgin record store at Marble Arch when we shared a flat in London. He would bring home 3 or 4 new albums every day - his collection numbered in the thousands. Just as a random suggestion, try listening to Ry Cooder "Bop 'til you Drop" , a really good guitar album, if my memory serves. As a non-player I admire your artistry and really look forward to your insights and commentary. Keep going, this old geezer loves every minute listening here in Toronto. Peace out.

I saw this in the Australian leg of this On Every Street Tour. Loved my first experience so much I saw them 3 more times by myself all in about a week in Melbourne. When I used to work at a big Canadian music store Sam The Record Man, I remember carrying a bunch of ‘On Every Street’ cd’s and stood there looking puzzled. My boss asked what’s wrong and I said that they are impossible to stick into a single genre. He said rock and I shook my head.. “Have you heard this CD?!”

You can get into a fugue state with Knopfler. The greatest sustained expression on guitar has to be ‘Tunnel of Love’ Mark emoting greatly here. Ref. Wembley live 1985. Loving your channel.

MK describes his music generally as where the Tyne meets the Delta. The Tyne being a river in Northern England that runs through Newcastle where he grew up, and the Delta refers to the Mississippi Delta in the southern US. So while DS was a rock band it was heavily influenced by British folk music as well as Jazz, Blues and Country music. MK has worked with many country artists, and has produced for Dylan.

The great thing about streaming music is if you can do the tightrope dance that soothes the artists fear of copy write infringement we can still turn each other on to some great music. It's there at our fingertips, we just have to do the right cat-dance to make sure nobody gets their feathers ruffled. Some of this stuff needs the exposure, let's face it. If we make sure that the right people hear the right preamble then there's a universe of material out there. We've all been touched by music that is obscure to others. If we can share it everyone, including the artists themselves benefit.

Really enjoy your reactions & explanations ref. DS & MK. You are right on target about the many styles in Marks musical output, and he has said in interviews that as far as he’s concerned there are no rules in making music & that he himself cannot be slotted into any specific genre. Live ‘On the Night’ is my favourite Dire Straits concert to watch (with the exception of the Alchemy Live ‘Sultans’ & ‘Telegraph Road’), every song is an outstanding performance. It would be great if you could try to fit in a reaction to more songs from this particular concert, especially ‘You and Your Friend’, ‘Brothers in Arms’, ‘Private Investigation’, ‘Heavy Fuel’ etc. This was DS last concert tour supporting their sixth & final album ‘On Every Street’. Mark is a musical magician with his prolific songwriting & brilliant lyrics, musical arrangements, inimitable guitar playing & vocals. ‘MK forever’ fans are so lucky to have had a further 26 years treasure trove of new songs from him with his Solo Bandmates, not forgetting his endless collaborations (Listen to his guitar input on ‘Have all the songs been Written’ by The Killers, 2023); and 9 movie soundtracks that hold some beautiful gems. I well remember and interview with Don Henley (Eagles "when hell freezes over" tour), where the interviewer asked what he thought of MTV , Don said it would ruin music because the video would become more important than the music and that he isn't an actor he's a musician. He was right, but it was a symptom of what was to come ,where fame and fortune became the reason to make music not a consequence of making music.

I remember when after 7 years waiting after BIA, I put for the first time the OES album and this song started on my CD, It took me time to connect with the sound, but it's and amazing song, always on DS, live version was 10 times better than the studio recording. I love see that you take many Knopfler songs to the channel, if I can make you a recomendation, look Speedway at Nazareth from his 2nd solo álbum, it's not too much known, but it's incredible, for me his Best solo song. You are quite right, music has gotten decidedly dumber. But that should not be surprising as the western educational system has been systematically making each generation dumber, less educated, less creative, and unable to use the higher functions and critical thinking. Sad state of affairs, but it was already underway when I was in high school, back in the early 1970's when much of the fantastic music came out. And it has gotten progressively much worse ever since.

I was DS fan from the beginning and even saw them in 1985, but was sold on Calling Elvis, and especially the live version, from first hearings. As for the rest of On Every Street, I agree, it was too overtly yankee and they should have taken the trajectory and style of Calling Elvis and generalized it further.

I love Dire Straits, but... this song is one of the worst, if not the worst... boring and insipid... unbearable! 😫🥱 I went to see a live concert here in Spain (91 or 92) and the show started with this song that seemed endless to me 😓. Edit: listened again,, yes... MK plays nice and cool guitar licks, I love them!... but I don't like this song.
