Thanks so much! This has been a hobby of mine for almost a decade; The surprising uniqueness of this style and it's sonic quality has always been interesting, and I suppose you pick up on a lot of the little details the longer you mimic it. On average, Johnny Ramone's skills are bizarrely misunderstood compared to many famous players' signature styles. Over the years it has been amazing to hear people's appreciation for accuracy and detailed information on this channel, so that has has really encouraged me to keep putting stuff out there.

Having grown up with the Ramones (yes I am that old) and having seen them 27 times coupled with the multitude of bad Ramones covers on YT I have to take my hat off to you. Pat yourself on the back. You have got his unique approach to guitar down to perfection and as many would say Johnny wasn't all "that good" I say bullshit. He was excellent and a powerhouse. A generation of bands cashed in on Johnny's blue print. That alone is a testament to how great he really was. Once again.... great fucking job on these covers. Top of the heap.

Wow, thank you very much! I have been playing these songs as a hobby for almost a decade and I can’t help but notice little details that I like to mimic. I have no idea how Johnny was playing like he did in just a few years! Hopefully these videos can make Johnny’s unique style a little more widely understood.

@@HardlyRamone There are a couple of keys to his style that many lose in the process. Key 1 - he rarely strummed (up & down). He did but not often. Key 2 - He rarely did a straight 8 count, meaning 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 following the high hats... he would drop a down stroke and didn't always do it the same, hence something like this 12345 78 or 1234 678 etc etc. That isn't easy to do at that speed while also changing chords. It becomes natural once you get it, but sooooooooo many bands doing Ramones covers don't do it and it shows. --- I think his lack of ability back in the beginning is what forced his approach and that's a good thing.

Amazing cover. Glad you picked up on the Em chord as well - that drove me crazy for years trying to work out exactly how he was playing it.
@HardlyRamone4 жыл бұрын
Tarantula Productions Same here. It honestly has a bit of a mucky sound, but you can definitely see it and hear it in live footage. I will say though, the minor chords sound better and sneakier through this Marshall emulation than most other rigs Ive tried.
@SpiderKing3894 жыл бұрын
@@HardlyRamone Yeah, absolutely. Honestly, it wasn't until the HD 35mm video of them performing She's the One that I properly clocked how he was actually playing it.
@HardlyRamone4 жыл бұрын
@@SpiderKing389 Nice. I remember cross checking their Old Grey Whistle Test 1978 performance and the Rock n Roll High School movie for the minor shape, and there it was. The minor 3rd is particularly audible in the movie mix of She's The One. Johnny was so sporadic with the minor chords in his career, but seemed to use them correctly when he did.

@@sensacionsombria5125 I'm not sure, but the album & early live versions of "Oh Oh I Love Her So" end with an A13 of all things. So strange for a Ramones song, but not bad, just a rarity.

@HardlyRamone4 жыл бұрын
Ha, I appreciate that. I don’t have Johnny’s signature energy/attitude (nobody does), but I think the stance and low slung guitar are part of what created his sound. It forces your wrist to move a certain way over time.
@rackaid144 жыл бұрын
@@HardlyRamone yeah I wish I could play that low, my fingers are kinda short so it’s hard to make barre chords.
@HardlyRamone4 жыл бұрын
@@rackaid14 yeah that’s frustrating. I have the type of physique Johnny had (I’m his exact height too) so his style probably comes more naturally. I believe he said the first thing he did before learning guitar was sling it as low as his arms/hands would let him, so I guess his playing style developed to be really intertwined with that.

What is your source? I have always wondered if it was perhaps a minor shape (it should be), but I have done pretty extensive combing of live footage to search for an answer, and never found evidence of Johnny Ramone not fretting the G string with his middle finger.

@@daninvader Well, your comment makes me want to re-check live footage to see if there is anything more high definition on KZbin now, haha. I just default to saying Johnny Ramone played a major chord unless I can find proof he didn't, or least I can hear the minor 3rd really well.
