Compressors do not increase the volume as it gets quieter. They have two parts to them: They reduce the volume of signals that go over a set threshold (e.g. -10db) and a gain boost. In other words, compressors reduce the overall dynamic range of your instrument and boost the signal, which makes your louder sounds quieter and your quieter sounds louder.

I read an interview with Gilmour in the 80's and he said that he gets his sustain out of sheer volume - he turns the amp up almost to where it starts to feed back. He didn't mention any of his pedals, but he made it a point to mention the loudness.
@Dantotherivertosilenceme

Ya i remember reading the same thing lately. Control came from alot of muting to stop feed back.

He uses old Hiwatts which are insanely loud amps with a ton of headroom. But he doesn’t normally push his amps into overdrive. He runs his amps very clean though and gets his drive from pedals

DUDE ...GREAT VIDEO... ONE SUGGESTION TO REDUCE YOUR HUM... USE A BOSS NOISE SUPPRESSOR(AROUND $100.00) IN THE CIRCUIT, THEN YOU CAN SPLIT YOUR OVERDRIVE CIRCUIT WHICH IS NOISY AND LEAVE THE CLEAN CIRCUIT ALONE... GOOD PLAYING AND GOOD FEEL

I’ve been chasing Gilmour’s tone for about two years now. It resulted in me building my own pedalboard, loosely based on his “Pulse” rig, but on a tight budget. The Electric Mistress Deluxe is a great flanger, and a must for the tones off of “The Wall”. EHX makes a few current variations, but none are as good as the big box. There is thankfully a small, and cheap, solution: the Mooer E Lady. It’s a micro sized pedal, and it absolutely nails the old Mistress tones. It’s also inexpensive (well under $100; I got mine for $40).

That delay pedal is a treat. I use a Boss DD5 along with a Digitech 2000...old gear I know..creaking a bit. I suppose you get to know what you have and get what you think is the best out of it and become a bit blinkered. Phase,flange,chorus,vibe....they create an atmosphere, a warp. Compression and Gate can really have an effect on a players' style if used properly. Sometimes a guitar is just a guitar...

Hi, Thanks for the great rundown on an affordable set up. If you fully shield your guitar with double conductive copper and earth to the sheilding from the trem claw and volume pot casing and hold your guitar perpendicular to the floor you will drastically reduce single coil hum to barely noticeable. Cheers.

Just nit-picking here, but a compressor doesn't actually BOOST the quieter parts of a note. What it does is LOWER the peaks of a note, effectively "squashing" the note and bringing the quiet and loud parts of a note closer together (hence, compression). Since the peak level is now lower, the overall level of the signal can be raised with gain. The note SEEMS to grow as the compression releases, allowing the trail to come out full volume.

As a rule of thumb, OCD's with red LED's are version 4. Until version 4 they had blue LED's, although some very early v4's do have blue LED's. The v4 also has different graphics with arrows around the knobs and so on.

I have a Mistress 'one of the older ones without the dot on the I' and a modified Big muff and I can get some good Gilmou,r and Hendrix, sounds with just those 2 and a strat. There is a guy on ebay that modifys the Big Muffs to the vintage circuitry of the 60's,70s, he also sells em. They are for distortion, and very versatile.

It's R. K. Butler , NOT ' BK ' He is the 80's wonderkind electrical engineering tekkie behind 'Real Tube", 'Blue Tube', and the famous 'Tube Works' product lines. Formerly produced in Denver, Colorado, & moving around the Western US , partnering with the good peeps @ Genz-Benz in Arizona for a development sojourn, and currently chairing Butler Audio, Inc. Many of his famous goodies are available directly on-line I'm happy to still have a 1-12 combo with his Mos-FET amp design. Sweet !

I'm digging this, but in my set up, and of course I'm not really trying to sound like David Gilmour, but he is one of my biggest inspirations, anyway I am using an OCD, also have a Lovepedal super lead, but the nicest two pedals that add to my semi gilmour sound, is the blackout effectors musket fuzz, I can get any era of the big muff, out of it. The other pedal is, the Catalinbread Echorec, it's based on the Benson echorec, obviously not as cool as the old school magnetic drum version but it is very close for something you would want to take on tour! Anyway thanks for making this video, it's always interesting to see someone else's take.

Most working guitarists have to play covers, and when you play a relatively famous song people want it to sound like what they know off the record. that's why there are so many videos with people showing how to get Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Hendrix tones.

My main FX that I use: Big Muff Pi MXR DynaComp Marshall BB-2 (lo-gain booster) Fulltone OCD MXR Phase 90 Joyo Classic Chorus Mooer ElecLady Flanger Mooer Shimverb Mooer Reecho (The Mooers are good for getting the tone for the "Time" solo) Boss DD-7 EHX Analogizer ....and a Crybaby, Boss PS-6 Harmonizer, Joyo Classic Crunch OD (none of those are really used for my Gilmour stuff) and a Jetter Gold Shift OD if one of the OD pedals break during a gig or session..
@rockofsalvation8232
@rockofsalvation8232 7 жыл бұрын
The Mooer ElecLady is an OUTSTANDING flanger and for about $50 new! It is the best of every other type of flanger I have tried (for my taste and aside from the real-deal). The Shimverb has a great sounding spring reverb but the shimmer is noise to my ears (I finally got the BigSky). The Mooer Trelicopter is also a good tremolo for the money. Those are the cheapest pedals on my board but they sound high-end (too me). I want to get an OCD and a BD. Currently use a TS9 and an Angry Charlie v3... other pedals I use: Dark Side Boss Comp Boss Boost Nova Delay (ND-1) Ibanez Weeping Demon or the Morley Mark Tremonti wah For switching, I use the octaswitch (reduces tap dancing).

Update: sold the Mooer delay and reverb pedals, sold the OCD and Jetter Gold Shift. Sold the Dynacomp as well as the Marshall BB-2. I now use two comps, a Mooer Yellow Comp and an MI Effects Comp/Gate Boosters: RC, MI Boost n Buff. Main ODs: Bearfoot Silver Bee, Jetter Jet Drive, Keeley SPMge, AC Booster and MI Effects Blue Boy Deluxe. Fuzz: MI GI silicon Fuzz, Caroline Olympia Muffs: EHX Green Russian Reissue and a NYC modded to Violet Ram's Head specs. Distortion: Vick Audio V-2, Proco RAT Delay: MXR Echoplex, DD-7, TC Vintage Delay. (I have a Source Audio Nemesis but I am still learning to use it). Mods: Still use the E-Lady, and my Boss MIJ CE-2, Phase 90 script clone (or an EHX Bad Stone), NUX Monterey Vibe and a Digitech Ventura for Rotary. I have a Keeley Dark Side Workstation set up in one loop in my switcher, with a cheap Power Booster for 3 songs. Ofc I don't always use all these pedals, but I find I can get a good DG tone with that lot. If I want simple, I just grab the Mooer Yellow, the Jetdrive, Mooer E-Lady, the Dark Side, my old Visual Sound H20 and my trusty DD7.

I currently don't have a deja-vibe and the closest would be my MXR EVH Phase 90 ... will that do at a low setting or would you still recommend a flanger or vibe pedal. Also, in your set up ... would you use the Electric Mistress and Deja-Vice together or one only at a time depending on what the tone you want is. I se a Tonebone Trimode and have the phase 90 dedicated to the line 2 output so it comes on only when the second or my "lead" '2'' channel is activated. I appreciate your time

Great work around regardless of what is or isn't. In the end it doesn't matter because you're duplicating a Gilmour tone so accurately. I'm of the opinion that it doesn't matter how you get there if you can find the right way for you. Thanks for an amazing demo of finding ones way!
