To hear an acoustic archtop as it was designed to be played, you really need to have a guy like Jonathan doing the demo. He has a complete mastery of the chord melody and swing rhythm style that dominated the scene in the 1930s-'40s. Too, he is a historian of the instrument as well as swing and its practitioners.

Jonathan Stout is one of my favorite guitarists and his band the Campus Five is incredible. He has posted some transcriptions you can download and you can play them but you will have to work at it to get them down. There is also a great book from Mel Bay called "Masters of the Plectrum Guitar" that has quite a large selection of tunes in this style. Again these pieces are quite challenging but they are really wonderful.

Many years ago, I had an opportunity to play Gibson Carl Kress guitar once when it was sold. I sort of remember a bit longer scale and neck was a bit felt thick with distinct u shape. It was a wonderful guitar and one of the best moments I had in my life time.

What a stunning guitar, sounds incredible. I once had an impromptu jam with my Dad's mate in Mojacar, Spain in the early 90's. He was Diz Disley and usually played a Maccaferri but on this ocassion he actually played my Telecaster whilst waiting for my Dad to finish getting ready as they were playing at his El Jazz bar in Mojacar that evening. Jonathan's playing and chord choices reminded me of Diz's playing. Well played Jonathan!!!

My dad owned and played a 1934 L5 with the Harry Reser band. He and Reser picked it up at the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo while the band was on the road in Michigan. Never was sure what my mom thought about that purchase; it cost $275.00, a lot of money in 1934. I had it for many years and finally sold it to a collector who was going to restore it. Don't know where it is today. Nice vid, brings back many pleasant memories.

Norm's tech might try experimenting with some different strings. I had a sweet 39 L5 years ago, tried many strings and loved the D'addario phosphor bronze, mediums. It gave the tone some extra warmth. These strings here sound a bit harsh to me. Such awesome playing though!!!

Wow the chording of this man is amazing ppl! Back in the 30s and 40s those were true real musicians that understood how the guitar related to the other instruments in the band and how the guitar was supposed to fit in with the song, these days guitarist always try and be upfront , which their is nothing wrong with that but when a true musician can feel the ability to now his space and how to use space in the progression is and art form that few musicians these days an achieve!!!!!

Slip slidin' away Slip slidin' away You know the nearer your destination The more you're slip slidin' away I know a man, he came from my home town He wore his passion for his woman like a thorny crown He said "Delores, I live in fear My love for you is so overpowering I'm afraid that I will disappear" Slip slidin' away Slip slidin' away You know the nearer your destination The more you're slip slidin' away I know a woman, became a wife These are the very words she uses to describe her life She said "A good day ain't got not rain" She said "A bad day's when I lie in bed And I think of things that might have been" Slip slidin' away Slip slidin' away You know the nearer your destination The more you're slip slidin' away And I know a father who had a son He longed to tell him all the reasons for the things he had done He came a long way just to explain He kissed his boy as he lay sleeping Then he turned around and he headed home again Slip slidin' away Slip slidin' away You know the nearer your destination The more you're slip slidin' away God only knows, God makes his plan The information's unavailable to the mortal man We're working our jobs, collect our pay Believe we're gliding down the highway When in fact we're slip slidin' away Slip slidin' away Slip slidin' away You know the nearer your destination The more you're slip slidin' away Slip slidin' away Slip slidin' away You know the nearer your destination The more you're slip slidin' away
