I have now completed the Justin Guitar Beginner Course.
5 months Guitar Progress Self Taught - Dad Learning Guitar- Week 20 - Justin Guitar Progress.
Week 20 of my 1 year acoustic guitar progress, I am a dad learning guitar later in life and document my playing guitar progression over 1 year.
I have a growing passion and love for this newfound hobby and want to encourage others who are looking to learn guitar later in life to pick it up and give it a go.
Using the Justin Guitar Beginner Course I have been learning on an acoustic guitar playing roughly 4-5 hours a week.
It would be great to have you along for the journey so if you are beginner, want to see someone struggling along who has no prior musical experience then hit the subscribe button and notification bell 🔔

@Endless Nameless Got to agree, it is all about having fun and just getting lost in the process. You can learn more than one song just divide them in your practice time and maybe focus on two at a time till you have them well understood. I wish I'd started and stuck with it years ago also 👍

So cool, man! I just started 12 days ago and also use the Justin Guitar Beginner's Course. I think he's one of the best teachers I've ever had to pleasure of learning from and that is with all subjects I've ever been taught. He obviously has a structure to the program and he's constantly reassuring me that all the things I'm terrible at are totally normal. I'm just getting anxious to actually play something that sounds like a song. I go through the exercises (just now started section 3) and none of the things I'm playing sound like a real song. I assume that's normal and Justin will get into more strumming and how to play the actual song outside of strumming on just the down beats. Thanks for starting this channel though! This video is exactly what I was looking for to put some more wind in my sails for this journey.

@MidlifeGuitar

@@chappy48 Well the beginner course provides a great foundation and then the intermediate stages start to branch off into areas of interest like the blues and fingerstyle for example. The theory course which you have to pay for is really good too. What you obviously don't get is that immediate feedback from an instructor which could be invaluable to stop any bad habits creeping in. I haven't had any private lessons to date but I have thought about it and feel it would be best when there is some area of learning I just can't get understand or seem to improve using online resources. I'm on 7 right now, will start 8 on Monday (I've been doing a lesson for 2 weeks at a time). As for the seasonal song, waiting for the lesson that says "oooh play me!" :) I've been recording myself playing actually for the past month and a half probably, so I want to put together a progression video when I get a chance. Let me know what your thoughts are!

Hi Shane, yeah I love the S6, for the price you can't go wrong as a beginner guitar, solid top, made in Canada and it will easy be enough all the way through your intermediate stage too. It has a slightly wider fret board than most which personally I like and if that works for you then I would say buy it.

Hi there, I’m a midlife guitar learner at 47. Given the current corona virus lockdown I feel it’s the perfect time to start. My 8 year old twins are starting as well. I’m only two days in and already staring to wonder whether this was a good idea or not. My left hand just seems to have no idea when trying to position for a chord. The one string songs are fairly easy but the chords have got me worried and I’m only just learning A and D. I know this probably sounds crazy after only a couple of days but when I watch videos like yours I just can’t see my hands going into autopilot like experienced guitarists hands seem to do. Any words of encouragement?
@MidlifeGuitar
@MidlifeGuitar 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Dan, everything you described is natural and how we all feel when starting to learn. For me, following a course (I used Justin Guitars beginner course which is entirely free, just google it) it helped me feel and see my progression and this helped motivate me and keep me playing and learning. Also, the sooner you can make it part of 'what you do each day' then the habit forms and you start to enjoy it a lot more. Maybe hold yourself accountable by playing with your twins at a certain time each day? Hope that helps, oh and Jimi Hendrix said 'Stick with Guitar and you will be rewarded', so don't give up now!

I am curious, to anyone who uses a guitar course, e.g. Justin Guitar, do you treat the course like with a normal teacher, practicing one chord or technique for a week and step by step adding it to a routine? Or do you try to move through the course a quickly as possible ?

Follow it diligently like any other course. You get out what you put in.
@anp5854

I started with it but moved through quickly. I also added other things to my practice routine right from the start. Things like learning scales and how to use them, jamming to backing tracks, music theory. Justin’s course is great but if you practice only one chord for the whole week and do nothing else, it will take you forever to actually get somewhere. If you want your progress to be good and fast, you have to be willing to explore, challenge yourself and try things out.

@MidlifeGuitar
@MidlifeGuitar 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Robin, I think Justin's beginner course was excellent for structure. You would likely cover some areas you already know as it has some theory mixed in it. The practice schedule at the end of each stage (I did the older *classic* course) was perfect for making sure I knew what to work on each time I sat down to play. You can use Justin's App which has some advantages like the play along tracks which has a cost to it but overall I preferred the login through his website. I bought both of his song books and used those as I went along to help learn the songs in conjunction with his song tutorials. I didn't print much off but stuck rigidly to his course and used the 'notes' section he has with the lessons. He did introduce the practice schedule assistant though during my learning which If I was doing now would make use of. Learning guitar has been a great journey so far and good luck to you I'm sure you will absolutely love it!

Midlife Guitar Thanks very much ... I’m hugely hooked ... Sunday morning and sitting here trying to learn the fretboard in the company of BB King, Eric Clapton and Robert Cray to name but three! I’ve started Justin and am just finishing stage one. Bizarrely, I can play the 5 pentatonic shapes but have found cramming my fingers to make an A chord change for a minute a bit of a struggle, so there’s much to be said about building a solid foundation! Incidentally I’ve paid to use the resources and so far am pleased with it all. Personally I think having a ‘study buddy’ nearby would have been a great help, a bit like having someone to learn a new language with, oh to be 13 again eh? 😂. Thanks for taking the time to reply ... best wishes with your future studies.

So what’s next Luke? Going to continue on with Justin Guitar? Maybe intermediate foundation or blues? Guitar Tricks?

Well, I've decided to stick with Justin and work through the intermediate course. I took a look at guitar tricks and not sure it is for me. Iwill try some other courses down the line but just to see what they are like and give my perspective to maybe help others out. The big question that I really didn't think about before was what do I want to get out of playing? where do I want to be? So I've been really trying to get that down. At this stage, I have a few interests, fingerpicking/folk, and blues/rock. Ultimately I would like to write a few songs and one day do a gig as part of a band, but that is a big-time goal. So it is slowly, slowly at the moment. What's are your longer-term goals with guitar?

was about $500 USD. Bit more than many do when they first start because I wanted it to last me a long time,
