Guitar setup check without tools? | UNDER 1 MINUTE! | Guitar Tweakz | Kris Barocsi

This time I'm showing how to check the setup of your guitar without using any tools. The best part is that it's simple to do AND it's done under one minute.
Please take note of the fact that this is not a setup video where I show the process.

In case you don't want to learn the actual setup process it's absolutely legit to go to a guitar tech / luthier. Still, it's important to know when the time is right to ask for that setup.

As a trained luthier and guitar tech, you should ABSOLUTELY check the neck. When you look down a guitar neck, what you are looking for neck relief (bow or back bow) and any twisting in the neck. This should be done whenever you asses a guitar because it will affect playablility and comfort. Most electrics will allow for adjustment around wood issues because of how they are built, but more extreme bends or twists can kill an instrument. The other thing to keep in mind is that where the neck is joined to the body is not adjustable, and you MUST adjust for that which is why looking down the neck is important.

Mike Fiore Hey Mike, you are of course right about checking the neck. Especially when looking for twists and uneven frets. If we’re talking about normal truss rod adjustments though I find the method shown in this video way more exact and effective. Unless of course you happen to have a proper straight edge to check the neck bow. Which „normal guitar players“ obviously do not own. Haha. Yeah so it’s a complex subject but strictly for setup purposes I would stick to my statement in the video: that’s the simplest and most exact way of checking the relief. Cheers

After watching your vid and many other action adjustment and fret dressing vids... I attempted to level the frets of my Amer Std Tele...So I bought some tools. The frets had a lot of string wear grooves....I took off the strings and straightened the neck and block sanded and leveled the finger board, got the grooves out, and crowned and polished the frets with steel wool and jewelers rouge.... I even refinished the fingerboard with sealer... I works fine.... action is real low with no fret buzz..... holy crap I got lucky.. the maple neck looks and works lovely............ Now I don't want that Godin anymore... my Tele has new life..... COOL

Great topic...so many people just pick up a guitar and play it, or they are afraid to attempt setting up a guitar properly for THEM. It really does make a huge difference, in playability, comfort, intonation, sound etc. For me....truss rod adjustment till flat, neck tilt angle, level frets, file nut slots, add fret board drop off on last 12 frets, adjust bridge height, adjust bridge intonation, adjust pick up height. Play guitar. Go for it.

Good video, solid advice. I used to obsess about having a super low action and tried getting there by having as straight of a neck as possible. Could never get it right. I realised with time that going for the ooposite works better. Basically more relief allows for lower action(up to a point). Settled for a .012" on my lp and stopped obsessing about how low I can get the strings, just raised it until no buzz. The room for the string to vibrate makes a huge difference in tone, clean and overdriven. I don't know how ppl play with dead straight neck...

Nice video Kris. Personally I like tech type videos, Maybe some wiring of pickups, tone possibilities, and ways to go about setting up an amp properly would be useful to others, they would be to me as I do all my own teching on my instruments, the nearest music store is a very long way away and I have no way of knowing if the guy is a genius or a butcher! I have quite a few amps and guitars, the amps almost always come without recommended settings for particular types of sounds which I think is a shame. You spend 800€ or so and are faced with a long row of knobs and not much of an idea how best to set them, I am thinking of my Marshall DSL40 in particular. (yes, it did come from Thomann). So, I am very pleased to see you showing advice on your channel and like many other viewers, I am sure I can trust what you have to say!

Cool and very informative video! There are general guidelines to follow when properly checking the setup on a guitar, but they are just guidelines. But players usually have different likes in how they like their instruments to play. Action, neck relief, pickup height etc. The tips he gives here are things you learn throughout your years of playing and getting to know your instrument and how to make those little adjustments. The way he checked for neck relief is exactly how I do it. I rarely ever uses tools to check measurements. You learn to go by sight, sound and feel.

So many people get this wrong. You want to use the fret on the upper (heel) end where the neck starts thickening into the heel. Usually the 12th fret. The truss rod is not going to move the 1" thick wood of the heel. Capo off the 1st fret and use half-way of that as your measuring point. If the frets buzz from the 12th fret down add some relief to the truss rod. If the frets buzz above the 12th fret, raise the action. You're not getting an accurate measurement if you're measuring from the 1" wood of the heel.

Before adjusting my truss rod I mark the centre with a fine felt tip pen so I can return to the start if I cock it up, once I am satisfied mark it again at the new position with a different colour

I generally leave the same space for the neck relief as I leave for the nut height. Just enough to clear the fret. BTW, the bridge could not be the last point of adjustment IF the neck is improperly seated. I had to install full neck shims in both my G&L Fallout and the HB Oopsie, as both bridges' adjustments had bottomed out.

Hey Kris, lemme add, sometimes touching 8th isn't really the feeling for some persons. I'd add, try using sunlight or a spotlight from sideways or behind you. Check if you have a slight gap (just a hair thick gap) between your string and fretboard (that sunlight and spotlight should give you good guide since those metals would reflect them back, and you can see the gap).

Yes, I'd love to see a guitar setup series! I got a really great sounding Hagstrom with the lowest action I've ever seen on a guitar. The only problem is the fret buzz. The high e is basically dead, the low E is buzzing as hell. Those are the only problems and I actually didn't care that much for some time because it's my practice guitar and I rarely play those notes anyway. But well, I want to have a working guitar :) I tried the second step and it indeed doesn't have any space left on the first fret. I'm trying to relief the neck a little bit. I hope it goes away.

Useful tips for beginners. But maybe misses the point of 'sighting' the neck. It isn't to look at the frets - definitely not the fret ends. Sighting the neck is looking for a range of 1st concerns. These would be problems that need to be fixed before you buy, or problems that can't be fixed without huge, expensive procedures. When sighting a neck, one is looking for any curvature in the neck - bow or back-bow. Looking for any difference between any curvature on one side of the neck vs. the other side indicating a twist. This means looking at the overall neck surface, not just the frets. If the neck does have some bow, is it consistent over the whole neck? Or does it stop at the point where the neck joins the body. If the latter, this could mean it may still need a serious fret job after the best setup possible. When I look at a neck, I start with the back - if it doesn't have opaque paint. I want to look at the grain of the wood. If the grain runs off at a steep angle - not parallel to the length of the neck, this could cause twisting of the neck down the road. If the neck grain does have severe run-out, I move on to the next instrument without any more time giving to that one. If the guitar is old/used, I look at all the glue joints of the neck. Fingerboard, neck/body (if it has that) etc. to see if there are any gaps or signs of repair. Stuff like that. Otherwise, good tips.

Marco Celestino You can see the relief a little bit at 3:02. As you can hopefully see the string barely moves. Let’s put it this way: 1mm movement in the middle of the neck is a little bit too much for a low action. So between 1mm and no movement at all is what you want. If you push down the 1st and last fret and the string touches the frets in the middle of the neck, then you‘ve over done it -> then simply loosen the truss rod a tiny bit. I hope this helped. Use feeler gauges. Measuring is a surefire way to quickly get you to consistent results every time. After you've done that you can simply play it and make minute adjustments from there.

1. Capo first fret. 2. Tape debit/credit card at twelfth fret and make sure it's flat against and matches curvature of neck fingerboard. 3. Set each string so it's barely touching card. Been playing over forty years and this method always produces great results.

I can quite plainly and easily see uneven frets by sighting down the neck from the headstock. It's clear as day. And then move your finger up and down the fretboard just above the strings and watch where your shadow matches the high fret. It's the single fastest way to find a fret that's totally out of whack.

Any chance of a video on how to do a partial re-fret - like the first 5 or 6 frets where most of the wear is? I have an old Les Paul copy and don't want to spend a fortune re-fretting if I can do it myself. Also, I feel that this is quite a common problem with ageing guitars.

Thanks for sharing! Today, I got the bad surprise to have a horrible rattling sound when I play the center strings between the 5th and 7th frets. I checked all you did, I check if everything is properly fixed (knobs, tuners, pickups, etc.) But the noise seems to come from "inside" the neck... as if the trussrod is rattling with certain harmonies? Ever heard of that? And when I knock the back of the neck, it sounds "hollow" 🤔 And the trussrod adjustment wheel is full to the max on the righty tighty. Should I worry about the future of the instrument, I just bought it new... PS: sharing your knowledge on your channel would be great!

Hey Oilid, if you're sure it's not fret buzz and you checked if the neck relief is good then yes, it could be the truss rod rattling around... Try loosening it a little and test those notes again. It's hard to tell anything for sure without having the guitar in my hands though. Also, if you can't solve it and the guitar is new bring it back in the warranty time. Use it, that's what it's for. @@KrisBarocsi Hello Kris! Thanks for your answer! Yes, the rattling gone when I loosened the trussrod a tiny bit. It was very hard to turn lefty loosy too. Now, the question is : is it a problem for the future of the guitar or does it happen often on green wood? Because in 20 years of guitar buying and playing, it's the FIRST time that I accounter this problem. It's a Schecter KM7 MK3. Thanks again man, you're great!

Hmm it's impossible to tell if it happens again or not. Normally it shouldn't. If you don't feel comfortable with the guitar best is to give it back. And even if you don't, make sure to check on the truss rod again before the service warranty is over. Just move it a bit in both directions and check if it rattles or not. Cheers mate!

Hey kris! I have a tuning issue with my 7 string guitar. It’s a schecter V loomis 26.5” scale. Now, when I want to tune to B flat with a set of 0.10 - 56 gauge the tuning for the low B string sounds perfect in tune with the rest of the strings. So if I put a set of thicker strings on it like a 0.60 gauge on the low, the tuning is totally of with the rest of strings. I have to tune the low B string almost 27% lower than perfect pitch to make it sound in tune with the rest of the strings? I have checked intonating and it’s fine. Hope it makes sense!😄 Cause I’m confused! Cheers

Hey man, bring your tele to a guitar tech to fix the dead spots. Mine has a 9.5 inch radius and the 6105 frets. That is a nice mixture of modern and vintage feel. cheers!

I kind of believe a pro setup is the biggest difference between a good guitar and s bad one.... that and pickups, and bridge. Wood and finish certainly matters but I think its very minor.

fretboarder haha, I‘d love to own an original 50’s junior. This is a heavily modified 2015 Gibson Les Paul CM though. I did a refinish on it, changed the humbucker to a Lollar P90, changed the pots and wires and swapped the G-Force tuners to traditional ones.

Dude, believe me, I love so many american things: music, the language, food, the nature, cars, bikes, my chucks, many TV series, etc. But honestly, this whole inch thing is terrible. ha ha! Especially stuff like 24 1/16 inch (which equals 24,0625'') WHY NOT STICKING TO ONE VERSION?! For instance with the one you can actually type in a calculator/computer. Can you please sort this out for us Mr. Poo? 😂😆

Use a capo on the 1st fret!

Steven Haefner Works to hold the strings in place if you need to remove the neck to adjust the truss rod, so you don’t need to remove the strings every time.

pascal bxl ohh absolutely! Just make sure the capo doesn’t press the strings too hard. Let the capo push the strings slightly on the 1st fret but don’t over tighten it. Cheers!
