Why does everyone wants to copy Tony? Go create something brilliant of your own!
@DavePriceGuitarist4 жыл бұрын
Depends on context. I played in a function/ wedding band for years that played this song. It was such an identifiable solo that the band leader insisted I learn the original. On the outro I could stretch out a bit and put some of my own thing in there but, on the whole, they wanted the original. The other point I would make is that we learn a language through imitation. Learning to play a musical solo is done best by listening and copying people that do it well. Knowing scales and arpeggios on their own are not going to make you a great soloist. It is hearing them used effectively that help you get a clearer picture of how to apply them. Ultimately the goal is to create your own music but this one of the paths that can get you there.

@@DavePriceGuitarist I totally understand and appreciate what you are saying. But why does it seem that no one, as you say, is learning the language? No one is catching on. I've not heard any comparable talent in at least 30 years. Don't you believe that true musical genious is dead?

@@DavePriceGuitarist I love the electric guitar, even though I can't play one. But it's not just the instrument, it is mainly what is going on in the artist's head (cognitive). Listen to the harmonica piece in Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely". Yes, people can learn great musical ideas from others, but no one seems to be 'coming through.' I wonder how many mediocre musicians are interested in, or capable of, learning from the greats.

Tony was a terrific musician, no doubt, but there have been great musicians before and after him. It depends on where you are looking. You are probably not going to hear it on top 40 radio as that has become formulaic and you are rarely going to hear a guitar solo these days on a pop record. I still get excited listening to new musicians and feel a lot of them have definitely taken what has gone before and are taking it further.

@@DavePriceGuitarist If you've been seeing encouraging signs, great for you! But I have not heard any truly exceptional stuff in almost four decades. If it is that there's great music out there, but not given the proper exposure, then we have a serious problem on our hands. One look at the Grammys and you'll see that alot of non-talent is being rewarded, but you can do your little bit in your little corner to help push talent into the limelight. Already there's a generation, IMO, that does not know what real talent is.
