Hey Whats up everyone I’m Jeremy and welcome to the string showdown where today the I will be comparing the Earnie ball Variety pack. This pack contains three sets of Earnie Ball Strings. Earnie ball Aluminum Bronze, Earnie Ball 80/20 Bronze, and the Earnie Ball phosphor bronze. The gauge size for all these strings are lights and I will be using my Taylor 812ce for all three sets.
These strings contain no coating so they won’t feel as slick as strings that do have a coating. If you tend to slide up and down the neck of the guitar then you might get more sqeaks out of these guys. But, if you are staying in the first position on the guitar neck and just strumming chords then you should have no issues.
I mic’d all of these examples the exact same way with a stereo spaced pair of mictek c5 cardioid condenser mics pointed at the 12th fret of the guitar. I did not add any EQ or compression but I did adjust the volume of each clip so that they are close to volume relative to each other. As we know, louder things sound better so I didn’t want that to influence the actual characteristics of the timbre of the strings if I had one clip slightly louder than the other.

Can you please do a 3 string video with Eb Aluminum bronze, Daddario Nickel bronze and Elixir nanoweb 80/20?

I like the PB’s on my 12 string. 80/20s on the Gibson. Every guitar sounds different with each string. I tried Elixers on my 12 string. I won’t do that again!!! Loved them on my D28.

Thank u so much for making these videos. I had my SJ 200 repaired after years and I could not for the life of me figure out why the the high E and B sound clinky and dead. I have determined I always used phosphorus, mainly elixirs. I’ve been using 80/20 nano web. The mystery is solved. I was thinking the guitar was going to be a wall hanger!!!

@@JTravlos Hi Jeremy, I don’t think you should use uncoated strings on your Taylor 812ce, because I saw the Safari said uncoated strings kills the tone of your Guitar. Do you think it’s true that uncoated strings can kills the tone of your Guitar? I’m not sure if it’s true? I’m using Taylor 224ce Koa Deluxe now and I use Coated Phosphor Bronze Daddario Exp16 Light gauge, Elixir Phosphor Bronze Light and Martin Authentic treated MA540T for my worship.

@@michaelgao8621 I don't necessarily think uncoated strings kill your tone. More people probably say coated strings kill your tone but I STRONGLY disagree with that too.

This particular guitar seems to like the PBs most af all - though the others also sound good.

Agreed, this guitar leans bright so it needs to be tamed.

Hi, J (Whats your name man? :) ) We talked to eachother on your Elixir nanoweb video. I really like your videos and you seriously need more subs. Seems the Pack is a real value pack. I like the Aluminum bronze, but my Cedar top Takamine would probably dislike them. So the PBs for me. Yesterday I got a new set of the Elixir PB nanoweb light and my cedar EIR Tak shines. They seem kinda too soft and almost slippery, but its just a huge difference to not notice after some months of the harsh 80/20s :) Thanks for your videos.

Oh cool, thanks for the update on the strings. You definitely get used to the slipperiness of the strings and then you "cant not have" coated strings. For a while there I thought I was just going to prefer 80/20s all around but my ear tends to always go back to phosphor bronze. Taylors are always a little bright and I think phosphor bronze tames the timbre of those guitars. Takamines tend to lean bright too right? But maybe cedar tops tend to make them warmer, hmm I dont know. I need to get my hands on more different kinds of guitar brands. I digress but I want to get my hands on more international brands. Tommy Emmanual plays a maton and Dave Matthews used to play a lakewood. Trying to work out a deal with a local shop to get more guitars in the mix. Anyways, thanks for liking the videos.

Not only am I interested in the sound but also the feel. Your opinion please on the feel?
@JTravlos
@JTravlos 3 жыл бұрын
Well, In general I do not like uncoated strings so its best to lead with that. Overall, I did not like the feeling because the strings just feel abrasive to me. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

@@JTravlos Thank you. I feel the same way and I do not like the sound of my fingers slighting on the strings. I use Elixir but may try the new D'Addario XS Acoustic Guitar Strings Phosphor Bronze, Custom Light, 11-52

@@robertwallace8533 I have a daddario XS video in the works but they feel very similar to elixir and they sound great.

The 80/20 needs at least one week to lose that annoying top end. After that period, they’re wonderful. Ask Jimmy Page.
