You should put the felt on the hammers so it reduces the click but not the resonance.

Simon, have a look at the Rickenbacker 360/12 string guitar tuner layout. That was quite an ingenious way of fitting double the number of tuners onto a standard size headstock by alternating them 90 degrees from each other. Maybe that could work for the toy piano? 🤔

If you want to fit all the strings on, you can use zither pins and a tuning wrench. If you lay them out so the bass strings are near the top of the piano and the trebles are further down, you should be able to use the same gauge (not gouge 😉) string for multiple keys. You can even string them through the bottom rod like you did with the piano strings.
@anthonywestbrook21555 күн бұрын
Came here to suggest the same. They're way cheaper than tuning pegs as well.
@anthonywestbrook21555 күн бұрын
Though they'll be harder than hell to tune, as short as the strings will be.
@OptiVids6 күн бұрын
Hey Simon, build a bridge-like construction on top with the same colour and finish, so you’ll have a whole new level for string tuners. Better be strong tho, cause it will need to support a lot of tension from the strings…
@TBoneProductionsVB3 күн бұрын
yep then nails to align and set their scale length to where the lower tuners are. Actually I'd do that to all but the lowest strings so the scale length gets progressively shorter for the higher notes.

gauge is a stupid spelling anyway

I'll just add this so Simon can see what the previous pronunciation was: gauge was previously pronounced like 'gayge'.
@Mr_Transistor5 күн бұрын
So here's what you should do. Make a separate peice of wood to host all of the tuners. Put it on the back of the piano on a hinge with some kind of stop to keep it from flheadstock. And then you will have the ability to modulate the strings like a whammy bar. Maybe stagger the tuners or have them at an ascending angle like some electric guitar headstocks.

“Somewhat Playable” is my aim for every instrument I have made. 😄 That is outstanding, I love the sound of the new strings, and of the the disassembly as well!!! I think , similarly to ASMR, that ye need to create a whole new genre of Ambient Musician Background Noises. (Which, obviously, the next step is to remix.) 🥰🥰🥰 And here, in the Midwest US, I’ve always heard “String Gauge” pronounced similarly to “Nic Cage,” like “StrinGAj” kindof! 😆 Excellent work, I very much look forward to the continued Evolution of the Toy Piano!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Maybe some Gibson firebird inline style tuners on the back, because they are positioned on the back, and you can have them directly under the tuners that are already there in between them so it's like staggered.

What if you put pickups inside it? You'd basically be converting a toy piano to a Clav, which I think would be super cool.

For the strings use banjo style tuners coming from the back instead of top in addition to the tuners already in place. Where there’s a will there’s a way👍 You got this.

@paulrose5 күн бұрын
Not sure if this would work or not but to help with the string tension you could try placing a nail/screw at the bottom and wrapping the string around it so it doubles back on its self then attaches to a bridge at the top. The string would be twice as long as I’m assuming would need more tension to achieve the desired note. To take this idea further you can make the hammer hit both sides of the string to create interesting dissonances as it’s unlikely both sides of the string will be the same note.

John Cage would love this.

I don't care how you add the extra tuners, as long as their pegs are black.
@SoRadAwesomeStCool5 күн бұрын
using strings from a smaller instrument would probably work better. Ukulele or mandolin or something like that would be more inline with the "scale length" of the piano. You could also try putting felt or some other fabric on the hammers of the piano instad of the strings, more like how a real piano is built, and it might get rid of the clacky sound from the plastic hitting the string.
