I absolutely love Ola's attitude, style and approach to both videos and playing. I guess because we're similar ages, I am 35 and used to be in a thrash band where speed and as many notes as possible was crucial. Now I know less is more. The right notes and the right vibrato makes or breaks a song, not just a solo! Thanks for everything Ola! :)

Matching vibrato to the tempo of what you're playing sounds good in most cases.
@grindwerks62126 жыл бұрын
Though I generally agree with the technique(s) being described here, there is a time and place for all vibrato methods. The key elements when developing vibrato, is similar to practicing scales; stay in tune and stay in time. I find using a metronome is very beneficial for getting comfortable with accent and cadence, and I also will make up a one note "riff" and just bend and vibrato to a drum pattern as well. Then there are also those moments where no vibrato at all is what makes the most impact. Great video Ola, you should make a collage video of your vibrato over the years... it would really demonstrate that vibrato is something that benefits greatly from the maturity of a players ability.

Yeah, I think just because the vibrato is fast doesn't make it bad/uncontrolled. I define uncontrolled as inconsistent between pitch/badly out of tune vibrato. Like every bend is different in terms of pitch and speed. Super shallow fast vibrato (early Kirk Hammett) usually sounds really bad/uncontrolled.
@MisuAlexandru16 жыл бұрын
cool tips! I think especially the "start slow" tip I also think it sounds WAY better on vocals too! I would also say, after someone masters everything you said in the video, that even if the vibrato is slow, or fast, it still needs to be on the beat (even if they're 8th notes, 16ths, or somekind of triplets). For example, that's why I don't like Kirk Hammet's vibrato, because it's not on time, I guess...

When it comes to metal playing, Dime and Zakk’s vibrato just does it for me. I just HAD to practice wide, full vibrato like those two when I heard it when I was 13. Also, for a sick modern guitarist with unreal vibrato, you should check out Brandon Ellis from Aris and the Black Dahlia Murder.
@sinisterminister9920 Жыл бұрын

I think that having control over the motion and a good notion of time are the essential points. Everything else can be just a matter of context. Some of my favorite players have really wide and wild vibratos, like Wes Hauch and Rick Graham. Also, the ones that "schooled" them, like Marty Friedman and Malmsteen, just to name a few.

Interresting fact for me: This vibrato action with feeling during the right moment and using the full arm comes by nature during hearing a lot of stuff and practice. Funny fact: People in general assess a guitar player skill mostly according to vibrato and bending style while playing.

I love this! I play in a tech death band, and yet naturally I'm more of a bluesy lead player (not so great at fast widdly stuff - I can tap, sweep and have fairly quick legato, but my alternate picking runs suck). So I learned loads of Gary Moore lead stuff when I was younger, so I have the naturally really wide and aggressive vibrato. So many lead players need to look at this kind of stuff! That said, that uncontrolled vibrato can work really well in certain situations, like if the riff you're playing over is super aggressive and you've played a fairly fast run and you're holding a note on this super strong part of the riff. Sometimes, playing that uncontrolled vibrato can work really well. Though, it should be used super sparingly!

I guess I'm the odd one out who likes the manic, sudden vibrato a lot more than the silky smooth one. Not to imply that this wasn't a great lesson - restraint, subtlety, use of grandma finger placement - all great stuff and valuable to learn. I just love that abrupt, abrasive sound a whole lot more - so long as it's not overused or used in the wrong place, of course, but that's true no matter what.

Vibrato is like the icing on the cake for great guitar soloing. Vibrato is pretty important. However, I think that tone, sense of melody, and phrasing is the most important. There are some guitarists that may not have good vibrato or any vibrato, but they still can play with a lot of emotion. For example, Kirk Hammett and Rob Cavestany. They may have used their vibratos that sound like a mosquito, but they've been writing passionate guitar solos, they can do some good bending, they can add plenty of dynamics, and their tones sounded natural. There should be much more to music than just vibrato.

Hey Ola, I've hit a wall with accomplishing good, wide vibrato on the high E and B strings. Unlike the G string, you can't pull the string downwards with the fulcrum point on the index finger side of your hand, as you just pull the string off the fretboard. Any tips for accomplishing that high E string 20-24th fret wide vibrato like Yngwie ends his runs with? He even bends up before the vibrato begins a lot of the time, but I can't even get close to sounding good with it. Where should the fulcrum be?
