Your comment at the end about learning by playing along to songs speaks to me. That's mostly how I learned to play drum set. Having to keep up with the song really improved my limb independence more than just doing exercises on the set

For three weeks this is really great progress. One advice I would give you is to use your strumming technique not only for open chords but also for not muted power chords like in Kids Aren't Alright.

the fact you have a specific practice routine so early on is fantastic! you should incorporate some string muting exercises to make sure that when you’re fretting a note you don’t let other strings ring out. it’s still a bad problem for me and i’ve been playing almost 10 years because i let it be a bad habit. overall, fantastic progress!!!

Instead of that excercise at 1:52, you might wanna give the one in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJLChZWHfK1prck a shot! It's better balanced between changing strings on upstrokes / downstrokes, thus more bang per buck of practice!

It makes me happy seeing a guitar hero legend learning guitar ❤️. Master of puppet it's pretty hard haha, try the part with clean arpeggios, it's the easiest part and it's beautiful. Don't forget to practice fingersyle sometimes, i can use my index fingernail like a pick so I don't rely entirely on having a pick to play(if it occurs an occasion in wich you don't have a pick for example hanging out with your friends), but I love both, classical with fingers and shred with pick the same. It's very impressively for only 3 weeks, it would awesome if you keep it up for three years at least. Btw, some parts like 1:30 sounds a little bit out of tune.

These are so cool to see! I don't play guitar but I do have a degree in music and it's super interesting to see your progression, struggles, and how you overcome them from the perspective of a complete beginner. 6:30 GOOD MAN! No matter how good you end up being, don't ever stop working on your fundamentals. Every song is essentially built on fundamentals. Focusing on getting a solid foundation in your technique, good playing habits, scales, chord shapes, and knowing your way around the neck, you will find yourself already being familiar with everything technical aspect a song when you go to learn it. Definite yes on playing with a metronome. Every profession musician I've ever spoken to pretty much said this is a must. You're never too good for a metronome. Awesome job and I'm looking forward to seeing you progress further and further!

Definitely invest in an amp, or pick up a phone-to-guitar cable (there are tons of apps), it’ll make what you’re playing sound and feel more like it’s supposed to be, and it’ll open up loads of other fun techniques like pinch harmonics 🤘

Oh man this gives me flashbacks from when I tried to learn Kickstart my heart for the first time and it definitely sounded much worse lol. One thing to keep in mind is that when you practice with the metronome and the pentatonic scale you are using in that one exercise you should set the metronome to a pace where you can play the notes clear and so that they ring out until you play your next note. To make the notechanges to seem effortless you could almost say. Good work dude, keep it up!

A good way to use the metronome is to build speed and accuracy. If you practice something till it becomes second nature, raise the BPM by a few and do it there (I usually do it in increments of 5, but you could do 1 or however many). Next thing you know you can play a lick effortlessly at a higher BPM

With how easily this seems to be going, I bet it won't be long before you're asking why you didn't do it sooner. GH did the same for me over 12 years ago, and it's honestly such a ride. Not to mention, GH will have sub-consciously taught you about tempo and time keeping. Probably why you're bossing chords and songs already pretty happily. Keep up the solid work man. You will not regret it!

Not sure if George will end up reading this, but, as a guitar player of about 5 years I have a small piece of advice. First up, great improvement George! But I totally recommend you start putting that pinky of yours to use! Playing without the pinky is a super bad habit to get into and limits you as a player later on. Imagine playing guitar hero without your pinky! But seriously good job man, I love to see people picking up the instrument :)
@RockingDyde

If you want to get to metal or even just rock music, I would suggest you to learn the difference between clean tone and a high gain tone, because the way you sort of need to handle the strings is very different for high gain that it is for clean/no gain at all. Clean is bit more forgivable for bangs and clonks and other tiny extra sounds what might come along when you play, but high gain tone is going to amplify EVERYTHING, so that's why it's important to learn to mute your strings very well. So start working on your string muting techniques as well :)

Dude you sound really good for only 3 weeks. But a huge thing that helped me when first starting is to be confident, even if you are wrong. If you mess of confidently, then you will learn from it. But if you aren’t confident and you stop and try it again, most likely you will mess up the same thing. Just a tip from a guy that’s been playing for a bit :) have fun

in my opinion i think the ways you are practising are perfectly fine. if you wanna play metallica though you should set a metronome at a speed that you're comfortable with and just grind palmmuted downstrokes, and when the speed feels to easy, you up the speed. do this and until your hand cramps and you will be a downpicking god just like Mr. Hetfield

I guess i was better when I started playing the electric guitar BUT, it must be due to the fact that I played the acoustic for 3 years before starting! And quick tip, if you have any timing issues during a practice session, just come back on it after ending the song, and play the section you're struggling with over and over again multiple times, so you get used to it...

You should look into a book called "Guitar Aerobics." It's a book full of technique exercises so you can always have something new to practice. The book is written in a "one per day for a year" format, but imo just set your own pace.

So sick man, I’d recommend play Beatles and Nirvana stuff it’s super simple. Do more chords and strumming and your melody with the right hand will come. That’s probably the thing I see the most on beginners is they have a really weird way of picking, it definitely take practice tho. Super sweet to see man. When I was three weeks in I was on barr chords and stuff but ur doing pretty good for just three weeks

Something which you could do now which would save you a chunk of time in the future is to try lift your previous fingers off of the fretboard when doing those runs like at 2:00. So when your middle finger goes down, lift your first finger off etc etc. I'm currently going through the stage of trying to unlearn keeping it pressed down which I've been doing for years and it's a total pain in the ass to try and change what has become so natural. If you embed it into your playing now your finger dexterity will be awesome in no time and you'll be able to play for longer as it decreases tension in your hand muscles loads!

The best tip I can give anyone learning any instrument. Play and have fun. At first just learn the things you want to learn. Dont try and force yourself to do things you dont want to do. Those things will come in due time. If you want to play songs exactly. Then play songs exactly. If you just want to jam along then do so. If you want to learn those scales so you can shred. Then start there.

you are doing really well George, great job :D one of the big things i notice in your playing is you are playing too hard both in how hard you are pressing on the fret and picking, just like with guitar hero the speed and accuracy go hand in hand with being relaxed, its really hard to do when starting out, but its really important to learn it early and not allow it to become habit like i did, from experience i can tell you its much easier to just learn than it is to have to unlearn and relearn good luck you are doing great
