Good scales to solo ?
@Matt-Wolf8 жыл бұрын
In general this piece is in C minor so Cminor will work most of the time. Over Cm7 I would choose Cdorian. Bar 9 to 12 is a major II-V-I in Db, so there you would go for the Db major scale. Hope that helps! :)

@Marius1988Roma7 жыл бұрын
We study years to understand which scales are the best.... lol, you can't ask that in a comment. ( I mean, studying years AFTER being able to play decently). People have written hundreds of books about what scales to use in what context..... if you're looking for a good answer, you will not find it in youtube's comment lol. Buy books about jazz improvisation and study :D
@Marius1988Roma7 жыл бұрын
I'll give you just a starter tip. You can really have fun, go out of scale and get that " jazzy " sound especially on the dominant chords. To start with, use diminished scales on the dominant chord. That is HWHWHWHW , or you can also use the dimiished whole tone, which is HWHWWWW.
@BringerOfBloood7 жыл бұрын
My advice will probably be considered noobish by some experts here, but my solution so far is the following: For the first 8 measures you basically want to use C minor, since the chords outline I, IV, II, V, I for this scale. The odd one is the fifth measure where the D diminished chord is played. Here you should switch to C harmonic minor. The measures 9-12 are a II, V, I for Db major so you should play that scale. My personal change to this is that I play Db Lydian over this, which is the same as Db major, but has a #4 instead of a regular one. This also has the advantage that it shares more notes with C minor, so it's easier to transition ;). In the last 4 measures it then goes back to C minor where you again play harmonic minor over the D. And then after that it starts from the beginning

When that second descending line (in the original melody) lands on a Bb, it clashes with the G7 (G7b9 in some chord charts). That seems to be how the original is. Im wondering if musicians playing this live frequently change the line to land on a B, or change the V chord to a m7 to compensate.
@hezekiah744 жыл бұрын
You mean play Gmin7 instead of G7? I think that sits TOO nicely in there. The G7 and the Bb gives it that spice. Avoiding "standard theory" and leaving the comfort zone is the only thing that makes music stand out. I've messed up on studio sessions even live, and other musicians are like "Yeah" what was the chord you played? coz it stood out (even though theoretically didn't fit)
@faithkrausman20144 жыл бұрын
@@hezekiah74 It is using the sharp 9 in my opinion.
@thaborchestra4 жыл бұрын
With dominants in a minor, most alterations are fair game unless there are specific chord notes in the melody. In the context of a G7 chord, the #9 is A#, and accompanying musicians would know not to play a natural 9. It's fine if there is a B natural being played below with an A# above, as this creates a major7 interval. With an A natural below and an A# above, however, you get that crazy minor9 .

i usually play a baug7/g (sometimes without the g in bass) on the Bb then g7b9 when it lands on the Ab. It sounds nice and resolves well. I find the change more fitting than a gm7. You should give it a try.
