I bet it does! My favorite combo lately is the ep booster into the Lightspeed into the tumnus all on at once, and using my volume knob to control the dirt. So responsive, and gets nasty too. So good. Thanks for watching!

@@guitarfreak585 Interesting signal chain, sounds great to me :-) Right now I have an MXR MC-401 clean boost in front of the RYRA and the Lightspeed and I'm considering to try a Xotic Clean Buffer. What do you think: would it work as an always-on-pedal for a nicer clean sound without disturbing the sound of the RYRA and the Lightspeed?
@guitarfreak5855 жыл бұрын
@@michaelheinz3954 I'm not an expert on buffers, but odds are some of your pedals have some good ones in them already, but anything thats giving you a fairly clean boost should be doing the same thing I'm doing here. Even clean volume into another gain stage will creat dirt, and it acts more like a dirt pedal into a cranked amp, very responsive. I really like it. I think I have another video on here with some noodling with just the Tumnus and the EP booster if you want to get an idea. I think it's called Low Gain heaven or something like that.

Hey Cody, This is very timely. I've been looking at the Lightspeed for a very long time. My current boost pedal just died so I've been looking for a new one. I like that the Lightspeed is so transparent but has some flexibilty with the frequency knob. The fact that it has just a little bit of amp-like compression, as you noted, will work perfect into my amp which has a solid state rectifier. It will hopefully give it some of that Fender amp feel. Thanks for this excellent demo. I think you've finally sold me. By the way, that Tele sounds killer! I LOVE Tele neck pickups. That's THE quintessential blues tone for sure.
@guitarfreak5855 жыл бұрын
Man I love this thing. The rectifier in this Mesa is also solid state, and the LS just gives it this very natural feeling squish. I use way too much gain as a general rule, but I felt really comfortable playing single note stuff with all the knobs at two o clock, and virtually no gain at all compared to what I'd normally use. I'm interested in trying it out with some humbuckers, might do that tomorrow. Thanks for watching!
@gearmaestro5 жыл бұрын
@@guitarfreak585 Yeah, I'm trying to use less gain these days as well. The other thing that you noted, that the Lightspeed adds a touch of bottom end, will suit my purposes very well. My amp is a little lean, and since I will be using it as a mostly "always on" pedal, this will definitely help to fill out the tone. Just waiting for one to come up on Ebay at less than full price. If that doesn't happen soon, I will have to bite the bullet and just go for it. No doubt it will be worth it. It's no wonder you don't see them on sale too often!
@guitarfreak5855 жыл бұрын
@@gearmaestro here's a helpful hint, I bought mine with affirm on Chicago Music exchange through reverb. They'll finance it for you with a light credit check (not one where they use your full SSN and that shows up on your report) and you can get a brand new one on a 6, 12, or 18 month payment plan. All the ones I found on reverb or ebay were only like 20 or 30 bucks off the new price, so I just did it this way.

@@gearmaestro also, I'm not sure if the added bass necessarily comes from the pedal, or if it's because its pushing the preamp and/or the speaker a bit more. It's definitely there, but I'm not sure how it's achieving it.

@guitarfreak5854 жыл бұрын
@@gilouch8975 final setup was Ep > Lightspeed > Tumnus. I like the fatness the tumnus gives at the end. I like compression, but I don't like compressors. I hear people use them well and I always want one, but when I get one, they just never feel right to me.

@@guitarfreak585 is this your whole gain chain ? I am asking because I am tempted by this route (EP, Lightspeed, tumnus) but I also have a tube screamer, a ds1 and a fuzz and wondering which I should keep. Wondering if the tumnus can act as a tube screamer by boosting the mids, then I could use it like that when I want a ts sound and get rid of my ts. If so my chain would be ep->lightspeed->tumnus->ds1-->fuzz
@guitarfreak5854 жыл бұрын
@@gilouch8975 i would do fuzz - ds1, then this chain. The tumnus does boost the mids, but they're higher mids than a ts would. It's the same idea, but it's different. Usually anything that's boosty (which these 3 pedals are), I tend to like after my distortion, because you won't get any volume boost from them if they're before. The Mudhoney is my main gain pedal, but these three together can get nasty in a different way

Great playing! I have a lightspeed in the mail, I think it is the missing level 1 od that I'm looking for. I use a MXR mini booster (it's an EP and a Micro boost in one) that is an always on tone sweetener into a Ceriatone Horsebreaker (Bluesbreaker and Klone) and finally into a rat clone. I think the lightspeed will be after the EP and before the Horsebreaker, it should be fantastic! As I find it reassuring that the tones that I liked the best in this video align with what I have in mind. :)

You have just firmly tipped a purchase in favor of the Lightspeed. I've made myself cuckoo here on YT trying to discern whether I want a Lightspeed or a Wampler Belle (Eric's take on an ODR-1). You are a great player. What's more, you hear true "volume unity" like I do. So often, when people try to get a clean vs. effected sound, they have the apparent volume on the clean sound noticeably below that of the effected sound. You however, seem quite adept at the volume details! That Said, our preferences may not be identical. I had a Tumnus for about a year or so and although I certainly like it, it colored the tone of my amp too much. I swear, the Lightspeed seems to be a true "overtone enhancer," rather than a "tone-definer." Other than the overtones I hear, it might have a bit of high-end sheen. Still, it doesn't seem to get in the way of the amp's tone to me. Then again, I'm a fan of blonde and brown Fender amps, which are occasionally a bridge from Fender to early Marshall tones. Consequently, I'm thinking this pedal will fit just fine.

Nice video! Considering ep - lightspeed - tumnus (that order) as your main light mid overdrive, where do you prefer your mudhoney? Before the Ep? Post Tumnus? Tks man!
@guitarfreak5854 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! I don't like the EP Booster with the Mudhoney, it makes them too muddy, too much bass in there, so it doesn't matter what order those two are in. But I use them in this order; EP - Mudhoney - Lightspeed - and Tumnus. The tumnus is used as a solo boost, the Lightspeed is basically on all the time, it's not adding much drive, but it gives me that natural feeling compression that I like. So either I'll have the Mudhoney + LS for high gain, then boost with tumnus, or I'll kick the EP LS and tumnus all on at once and ride the volume control a lot. I've also recently been using a mini Tubescreamer in place of the EP, and I like that too. I'm gonna make an updated video this weekend of my drive section (and a break down of the whole board soon too). Thanks for watching!

That’s a great demo. I’m just about to order a Lightspeed. At the moment I use a Boss GE-7 to push my Marshall Plexi’s front end. I’m thinking I’ll put the GE-7 into the Lightspeed, into the amp and have the Lightspeed always on. Obviously I’ll try all combinations of pedal order, but will putting the GE-7 before the Lightspeed boost the gain or is it likely to just give me more volume?
@guitarfreak5855 жыл бұрын
With the GE first I would think it would push the Lightspeed and your amp, but! The Lightspeed seems to have a ton of headroom, so you might also get a volume jump. My favorite combo right now is to have the EP boost into the Lightspeed into the tumnus, all on at once and man it's great. Super touch sensitive, can be pretty snarly, but also cleans up really well. And it seem like I'm still getting a volume boost at each stage.

Why wouldn't it? The thing with boost pedals is remembering that into a clean amp, it's just going to give you volume.
