Get Out Of My House is a must listen by Kate Bush. There are so many things happening in that song you'll feel like you are going insane.

Get Out Of My House is one of my favorites from The Dreaming album, second only to Night Of The Swallow. Its a "different" sort of song, but it is so great.

@@youngbloodk Get Out Of My House is creepy, but it is one of my favorites on The Dreaming and one of my favorite Kate songs in general. Night Of The Swallow is another great one.

I think, it was partly pre-recorded with audience and films being displayed (see also her duet with Peter Gabriel, partly film, partly live). IIRC, it was broadcasted on Dec 28, 1979, but I'm not so sure, would have to check it out. Her singing is probably half (?) playback, but I'm not an expert on this. With Kate Bush, you can't even be sure without further information, because she WOULD be able to do it totally live in one take...

The headset she created for her live concert. Using a coat hanger. Not in this recording. Her music is always theatrical. Hey live concert is amazing. Check out James and the cold gun her concert version

Actually it was her stage sound engineer of her "Tour Of Life" concerts in 1979 (same year), who created the cableless mic for her...

For the first headset mike , watch the 'Tour of Life' concert from Hammersmith Odeon. A show that displayed all of Kate's talent.

Leslie Turner, beat me to some of the info about this and I really like the Christine Pallon write up of the special. KB often uses films or books as inspiration and she seems to have little fear of being an outsider. For the Xmas Special I think a few of the songs featuring her at the piano were performed live. I personally love the live KB at the piano and a good one to watch is "Breathing" done for a charity concert (Comic Relief). It's also a bit of a dark subject matter, about an aware foetus knowing a nuclear apocalypse is happening outside his mother's womb. KB seems to have no fear when it comes to music. Search for "Kate Bush - Breathing - Live" in the youtube search. When she was 20 she appeared live on a BBC children's show, she expected to perform a solo piano version of "In the Warm Room". The producers and directors thought it was too sensual for kid's TV so they asked her to do something else. She must have said what about if I do a love song "Kashka From Baghdad" and they agreed. I doubt they realised it is about a hidden gay love affair. "At night they're seen Laughing, loving They know the way To be happy" Search for "Kate Bush - Kashka From Baghdad (Live 1978)" to watch this. Yep, BBC kids tv 1978 and no fear shown from KB.

Thank you very much for your followup, yes Kate is absolutely fearless in terms of what subjects she features in her songs, subjects that other artists around at the same time, just wouldn't go anywhere near. The tile track of her debut album "The Kick Inside" is another example which was inspired by a traditional folk song. Regarding the BBC kids TV show it I remember rightly it was called "Ask Aspel"

The priest and the killer really is the same guy, both portrayed by kate bush's brother, Paddy Bush (he is also a musician from her band, he is a multi-instrumentist)

Thank you for your reaction, I've tried to gather up as much information as possible, I suspect that the vast majority of Kate's performances are lip synced to studio vocals, although there are some were Kate is seating down at the Piano were I can't be such, perhaps someone else can confirm or deny in those particular cases? Regarding "The Wedding List" itself the following information has been copied from the Kate Bush Encyclopedia website (an excellent resource).... "The song was inspired by a François Truffaut's film called The Bride Wore Black ('La Mariée était en noir'). It tells of a groom who is accidentally murdered on the day of his wedding by a group of five people who shoot at him from a window. The bride succeeds in tracking down each one of the five and kills them in a row, including the last one who happens to be in jail." I do wonder if the same film was also an inspiration for the Kill Bill films? So the Kate Bush Xmas Special broadcast on the BBC on the 28th of December 1979, is the most un-Christmas Special that you are ever likely to see, since it only featured one song that referred to Christmas. At this point Kate had released a number of hit singles including her worldwide hit Wuthering Heights (during 1978 and 1979) and she had also released her first two albums "The Kick Inside" and "Lionheart" (both in 1978). During 1979 Kate had her sole concert tour the critically acclaimed "The Tour Of Life" with dates in the UK and Europe. It was prior to that concert tour that a very early headset mic was created, because for some songs Kate wanted to have the freedom to dance and sing at the same time. Kate was also working on her 3rd album."Never For Ever" on which she was credited as being a co-producer, a number of songs from that unreleased (at the time) album featured in this Xmas Special including "The Wedding List". So Kate had a very high profile at this time and had previously appeared on a number of BBC programmes performing songs. At the time there were only three TV channels BBC1, BBC2 and ITV. Here are some retrospectives on the Xmas, I guess best read once you have reacted to the other suggestions for songs that appeared in the Xmas Special: www.thecut.com/2020/12/i-think-about-this-a-lot-kate-bush-1979-christmas-special.html faroutmagazine.co.uk/kate-bushs-forgotten-christmas-special/ medium.com/@christinepallon/an-in-depth-analysis-of-the-kate-bush-christmas-special-40-years-later-796da61dadaf

Most American's believe that the music video was invented for/by MTV. Not so. For a singer/band touring got them sales and air-play, but back then it was not always possible to get to Australia or New Zealand, or anywhere far from their home territory, to promote their music therefore, short promotional videos were produced and probably not seen in the States because so much emphasis was put on performing live. I live in Australia, pre 80s, any singer /band with new music to promote produced some form of video to go with their song. Trying to think of a real example of a music video from the 70's - only one's for sure I know were pre-MTV, AC/DC's Let there be Rock and Blondie's In the Flesh but there must be 1000s of others. And it's difficult to explain how massive an artist Kate Bush was in a Punk/post-Punk/Skar/Reggae/pre-New Wave music era. She defied the pigeon-holes of music. Which is why she was hard to market in the US. I have been a fan since Wuthering Heights was released, the year I turned 14.

You can’t really react to Kate Bush without listening to the lyrics as well. She tells the story in words, music, voice and video. Just listening to the music won’t cut it. Listen to the Sensual World, The ninth wave (b-side Hounds of love album), This Womans work etc

This was not live. They probably set up mics that weren't live to make it look like a performance was happening. I could be wrong and it's just my personal opinion, but I don't see much influence from Kate Bush in Lady Gaga. I think Madonna was much more of a blueprint that she followed. But others might say different. I hope you are listening to these songs without interruption at home to get the full impact. She is such a massive musical talent. Though Kate Bush made videos and many were interesting, I have always felt they were secondary to the complexity and musicality of her recordings. I don't think the songs I recommended have live performances on YT, just so you know. Nice you are exploring! PS- another great song is "Rocket's Tale"

To help you understand, British TV in the 70s/80s was really quite low-budget compared to now, this 'Xmas Special' was a showcase for Kate's lipsynch skills :-) and yes, we've never been squeamish around Christmas, we do less of the Perry Como songs round the tree thing, we don't mind a bit of blood'n'guts. What you're watching here is the development of the modern music video. (This isn't one of my favourites of Kate's, I think I was seeing the 'wide eyes' too much at that point, they calmed down... The final song on Kate's debut album is about a girl having to commit suicide because she had her brother's baby inside her... Kate's never been afraid to go there.
