I think el requinto was invented by Alfredo Gil, a Mexican singer and guitar player of El Trio Los Panchos. The name of el requinto is probably because it is tuned 5 semitones above the regular guitar. Quinto means fifth.

Somehow I'm yet to find a tenor sized Guitalele that doesn't sound too "boxy". The baritone guitalele definitely has a much more balanced warm tone to it.
@tiptonbrett Жыл бұрын
I would agree they’re different, but unless a band was looking for a very specific sound that one of the instruments provided, they would probably be interchangeable in most contexts . The average person in the audience is just going to see a small guitar. Surprisingly, the Kanilea sounds a little deeper and more resonant than the bigger-bodied requinto. It may be due to tone woods.
@roddyg36923 жыл бұрын
Requinto means "mini guitar?" I thought you knew your musical instruments, but apparently you didn't do your homework. Requinto means requint (high pitched) in the old Portuguese and Valencian Spanish languages. You had just described it earlier for the other instrument: A high-pitched flute, a piccolo, an E flat clarinet, a high-pitched drum or guitar. Requinto guitars were made famous by the romantic music trios from Mexico and the Caribbean Islands. They are custom made with a neck length between 16 to 23 frets, and with or without a cutaway at the end frets for better access to the higher notes.

This video is an interesting take on the sonic differences, but it really feels like a missed opportunity. The point of a guitarlele may be playing the strum along music like the sample you chose. I would have really liked for you to explain more of the purpose of a requinto "ray-keen-toe" in the contexts where it is used. It would have been really cool to have someone who does classical guitar or Trío Romántico discuss what the role of the Requinto is in that style and try that style on the guitarlele and then have you try the pop-strumming american stuff you did. Feels like it would be a cool collab with other guitar youtube channels and drive more traffic to both. I like your presentations, but I think this might need a second part where you challenge someone to use the guitarlele for a requinto's job and see if it holds up.
@boriscat19993 ай бұрын
Yea. Just because they have the same intervals between strings doesn't make them the same instrument. Of course if you play guitar or ukulele, you can very easily move between these different instruments, a lot of your skills will translate well. I think playing some of the Spanish style and flamenco on the little tenor guitalele looked a lot more difficult. The string spacing and size doesn't seem like it's ideal for that. But if you want a ukulele with some spare bass strings, a guitalele is great for that. I have a Yamaha GL1 and its a fine little strummer. Although I usually tune it Open C (GCGCEG)

Sure, comparing/contrasting configuration of the instruments is one thing, but defining the difference of the instruments boils down to the style of music each is famous for. Requintos are known for fast decorative ornamentations and runs. I suppose the hybrid guitars could be used when we forgot to pack the requinto for the gig.

I feel like he didn't use either to it's true potential. The requinto was made for bolero and jazz music, and trios from the 50s and 60s showed it. Los Tres Ases and Los Tres Caballeros are extraordinary examples. I don't really know what the guitarlele all too well. It's quite an uncommon instrument. Jazz perhaps? Strumming would be more fitting.

These are two different instruments. The guitalele (there is no "R") is a 6-string ukulele. It sounds like a ukulele. "Requinto (literally "second fifth") refers to a smaller, higher-pitched version of another instrument: "requinto clarinet" = small clarinet; "requinto violin" = small violin; "requinto flute" = small flute. What you have there is a "requinto guitar" -- a small guitar tuned a forth higher than a guitar: A2 - D3 - G3 - C4 - E4 - A4. It sounds like a guitar. Also, it is not unusual for a guitalele to be tuned a fifth higher than a guitar -- a whole step higher than a requinto guitar: B2 - E3 - A3 - D4 - F#4 - B4 Your tenor-uke- sized guitalele is unusual. Every guitalele I've see up close or handled -- and I've played dozens -- is built around a baritone-uke-sized body.

Trying to decide what's a guitar and what's a ukulele and what's a requinto as though they aren't just different iterations of the same instrument is pointless, in my humble opinion. Put a capo on the fifth fret of a guitar, and you have a requinto or a guitarlele, then ignore the two bottom strings and it's a uke. A uke is an alto guitar. A guitar is a soprano uke. Even if one tunes E-E and the other tunes A-A, the intervals are the same. If you tune your guitar D-D, does it stop being a guitar? Sure, they're different sizes with different pedigrees, but so are dog breeds, and they're all still dogs. Seriously, we don't do this with basses and banjos. A bass is a bass no matter how many strings it has, whether it's short scale or long. A five string banjo and a four string banjo are both banjos. Why do we get into such hair-splitting with guitars?
