Do you find that you tend to get lost on the guitar fretboard when you start a solo in any key that you're not as familiar with? If you enjoy improvising or playing solos, especially in minor pentatonic classic rock and blues genres, these tips will help you to never get lost on the guitar fretboard again.
These five tips will help you to tear up and down the fretboard without ever losing your place. Using only the landmarks on the low E and A strings, you can keep in mind what pentatonic shape you are in, and find the notes you need, instantly.
Do you really need to learn all the notes on the guitar fretboard? Maybe one day. But for now, using this system of "landmarks," you can use the low E and A strings as your guide.

I'm almost 70 years of age, and have a mild form of autism, wherebye my brain cannot remember certain things. All my life Iv'e wanted to play guitar solos. After watching this video and noticing that it relates to visual patterns rather than relating to sequences, I feel more confident in my efforts, Im sure this will help a lot of people... Thank you.

Dude! U r proof it's NEVER too late! Never give up on your dreams! Well done! I decided @ 60 that I wanted to learn to play lead guitar. The big secret: WANT it - and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE (not to sound psychotic, but it's amazing how much better you play after 5 consecutive hours). Even my son(!) asked why I wasn't famous! Keep it up, Jeff! All the Best! As for GLV - you are SO relaxed in this video - and that makes us ALL calm the F down and focus on what you're teaching. Top notch! Cheers.

There are only a very small handfull that teach on this site that can remember what it was like to not get it, but they speak French and I speak English, or so it may as well be.,You speak the language of the average player, beginner to, some of us that have been playing for years with fakeable shredability in public, but don't understand how to break out of the " Easy shape" , and thank you for calling it that. Honestly, I wish some of these "teachers" could watch one of your videos and realize, We ain't stupid. we just need it explained right. You get it. Bravo!.

Another great lesson. I have been using the fret markers/dots on the E and A strings to find the notes. So on E string I use G,A,B as my reference points and on A string I use C,D,E to find the notes. I like what you have done here to locate the shapes. I had been playing E minor pentatonic key mostly starting on 12th fret so your method really helps me now to start lower on the fretboard.

Thank You Sooooo much for showing an easy to understand method of navigating the fretboard, I am 67 years young and have been playing mostly chords with some fills between since I was a teenager. Couldn't seem to grasp how to play leads or riffs without confusion and frustration. You have changed all that, It's fun to learn at any age and now my son and I can play together and I can do some of the lead parts as well. I really enjoy your channel and your method of teaching. Just found your channel. It just popped up on my feed.. I subscribed. Great lesson. It took me years to learn this on my own before You Tube but your video really makes it easy and you should have way more subscribers. I like the repetition, it makes the info sink in. You asked for ideas, one I always look for is playing 12 bar blues and how to solo over the chord changes. I know there are notes to look for or you can change into the root position and play a little there but I still struggle. Playing over the 5 chord is my enemy, it never works out for me. I also like how you string the boxes together. I also liked how you force people out of position 1 as thats where we usually get stuck... Great video , keep them coming..

Blue, I earnestly thank you for taking the fractured pieces of over a half century guitar quest and joining them in only a couple of your videos. Your story about Clapton's Crossroads was especially poignant to me. I learned virtually every chop I know by painstakingly dissecting, bar by bar... totally by ear - every measure of Crossroads - from a 33 1/3 vinyl record. While on a business trip to NYC, a friend brought me on stage at Manhattan's Triad Blues Club. I sang and played Crossroads to a packed club in the City for the thrill of a lifetime. But that singular analysis was all my schedule would allow to form and front a Blues band in 1995. I wish I could have seen your videos 30 years ago ! Check out the videos I put together on an old Boss 532, under the KZbin name : Roger Sloop Let me know what you think. Cheers !

But since discovering you & becoming a Patreon customer, my abilities have markedly improved. I commented a while ago about how I like your strategy of giving each shape a memorable name. It’s been much easier than giving the patterns #s because going from Major to Minor gets confusing. Guitar fretboard is indeed far more complex than piano, but it's for a good reason, and it all makes sense in time. 😊

Hi Blue i love youre latest video. I am an acoustic player but some of those scales i will be able to use. When are you going to do some acoustic blues lessons I am always looking for new material. Take care George Cornwall Uk,

Thanks George, the acoustic ones didn't seem to do as well on YT. But I do want to try more. I'll make a note to do that.

I have the 5 pentatonic boxes and their root locations memorized pretty good. I use mostly box 1, the extension, and top half of box 4. My problem is making the jump on the fly from box 1 or the extension up to the root on the G string in box 4. I find myself playing mostly on the first 4 strings, and locating the root on the G string in box 4 seems to work better for me then using the root on the A string. Because it's 4 frets up I have to stop and get my bearings though. I suppose that will resolve itself by just practicing. I'm an intermediate player and do not play in a band or jam. I'm at the point where just playing over backing track or slow blues songs seems to be helping me more then anything else.

The guitar was built for the mixolydian scale not major or minor remember the dominant and what the word actually means. Bloody piano boffins and musical theory wants to relate the piano to string instrument like guitar and most don't understand why they have problems. This is the first scale I would teach anybody if starting to teach outside of the box when it comes down to it you either do your homework or you don't and when you have you easily laugh at how and why people struggle

Great video! I know that easy shape and the extensions and how to do that run easily, but I never knew I could connect it with all of these other shapes. I'll be watching this multiple times in the coming weeks

Could one use those landmarks for other scales like harmonic minor or Phrygian used in neo classical metal riffs?

Sure! The same thing would work. Just memorize the scale shapes based on the roots on the low E and A.

@@GuitarLessonsVancouver If you didn't already have my full attention, you would now, by 1. Even taking the time to respond, and 2. Responding in such a timely fashion. Very impressive. I went to your website and quickly discovered that your schedule is full, both in person (which wouldn't work for me anyway) and online. When combined with your YT channel, I'm sure it leaves you with very little time on your hands. Now we don't know each other in the least and far be it for me to offer up any advice to you, but clearly, your style of teaching is in high demand. So I'm left wondering if you have or are currently considering some type of Video program that would allow you to leverage yourself out to a much greater student base. Perhaps even several so as to appeal to a wide range of students according to their skill level. I read your questionnaire on your website and I believe you have the ability to create a program that would benefit each category that students may fall under. And, each program could be progressive to the next one. I'm just spit-balling here. Thanks again for the quick response.

@@roymccarty6931 Thanks Roy! I am indeed working on that and more. I'm starting a Patreon very soon, just need to set up some things first. It might be later this week. And then at some point I will be finishing Book 2 to go with my "Guitar Soloing Like a Pro" book, and.... hopefully a video series based on those books. So lots planned, but of course, it's always just a matter of having the time to do it. Thanks for your encouragement 🙂
