Muting is a refined skill, and it separates the better players from the thrashers - in order to hear your Guitar and what you are playing you naturally develop subtle muting techniques - something I have noticed as an old Guitar player/teacher - you are spot on Gino!

Muting is a very large part of playing guitar (particularly electric). My muting has been a byproduct of practicing single note lines where I practiced single note lines while diligentally preventing overtones or wolf tones ringing sympathetically on open strings. Also when playing rhythm, especially with chord forms that skip a string or 2 etc. Muting well does take into account both hands as you mentioned. It's interesting how many players do this without even being aware of it at first... and then like you (and myself) suddenly realize what an important aspect it is of having good technique. Also... tone and being self-aware are great points; definitly not "too cerebral or out there" imho. You've done a great job explaining this in your video. Now I just HAVE to watch more of your uploads. Thanks. God bless.

This may be one of the BEST lessons on muting I have seen.I will practice getting single tone from each played not from now on! Thank you so much

I've had that muting revelation myself. You almost have to imagine that you're playing the guitar like a horn - focused on pulling the tone out of just the fretted notes. Love your channel!

muting what you aren't playing... the best piece of guitar advice that I have heard in 30 years. Thank you. You are the man!

Excellent - most of what's interesting in life is subtle, this a perfect example.

Gino, you are a real guitarist. It's a joy to hear your thoughts on tone. Tone has always been the number one thing for me. Oh, and the mute thing, I love it, I do it too! Ps tip for any young players out there: if you wanna hear feel and tone look no further than Peter Green, Paul Kossoff and Taste era Rory Gallagher. Cheers dude.

I've been hiding behind an acoustic all my life because it is so forgiving. Whenever I attempt electric, the extra noise and feedback and the amplification of every mistake really disheartened me. Now that I'm honing in on hand placement, picking techniques, tone set up and this GOLDEN AH-HA tip of muting....I look forward to learning. Thanks for the tip!!!

Thanks Gino! I'm not sure if three rods is the strongest metaphor but the concept of making all the elements in your sound one interwoven, balanced, signature is right on!

Gino. Just found your channel (via your Cheap Guitars vid). Really like your approach and the fact that you stress the importance of the subtleties and the importance of getting the basics correct. Subscribed. You're a great player and a natural teacher. Thanks.

What you're saying makes a lot of sense. It makes no sense to me when I hear a guitar demo where someone uses so much distortion that you can't hear the guitar. It's all hidden by the distortion. There's no "balance" in the sound.

Excellent point about getting a balance of those three elements! I noticed on this video that you played runs mainly using only 3 fingers. I've got little Vienna Sausage fingers, so using my pinky - especially on the three lower strings - is clunky and ineffective. What is your opinion on "The Value Of Pinky Usage"?

Is that a Jazz Fest tattoo on your right arm? Thats awesome!
@dalekenjarvis9 жыл бұрын
That's some pretty good insight as to what good tone is. I've been told by many guitar players who are much better players than myself that 90% of tone comes from your fingers (playing technique). I tend to agree.
@billydiesel85209 жыл бұрын
Gino I think what you're trying to say is that the digitalization of the signal caused by the pedal makes the analog signal of the note seem "digitized" right?

Totally agree with you Gino. I didn't even think about muting over the years... but had been doing it unconsciously until a student asked me about it. Funny how it's just a natural reaction for some and others have to think about it. Glad I found your vids today, I'll be tuning in some more.

I thought I was the only one. And I wondered, do other players mute their other strings or are my fingers just bad that I need to mute xD

Hey Gino Awesome lesson man. I've been playing since 1966, and muting just came natural, like it does for a lot of players. However lol, I had got ill and haven't played in over a year, and I'm noticing now that I'm starting to pick my baby back up, that I lost my muting lol. So yeah you dam hippie you ;) Muting is very important, indeed. Peace, FrankO

Hey Gino, I'm Mike, and a big fan, I've seen you play, I love your style, I'm a big Blues fan but I mostly play Rock especially with the band I have now and I've always been obsessed with tone....I understood your analogy with the rods but in my case although I use TS Type pedals like the Fulltone Fulldrive I use an OCD a lot... and as you know it packs a lot of gain so it's hard not to hear the pedal most of the time, do you have any suggestions? Take care.

Purple Haze sry it took so long to respond! This video isn't on my channel! Lol. I'd say your best bet is to give up on that stuff and just get an Oddfellow caveman. Lol. It's my go to overdrive. I'm biased cause I love it.
