AC/Compressor Start Assist/EasyStart 368 Soft Starter

Thanks for taking it apart and speaking to the quality of the unit. I installed it yesterday and I have taken my LRA down to 34 and my running amps just under 8 on my 3 ton Lennox.

It is a combination soft start AC voltage ramp and hard start boost capacitor. It is not a VFD. Just triac dimmer for startup voltage ramp, like a light dimmer. Also has the large start capacitor that is put in parallel with permanent run capacitor in unit during startup ramp to provide greater startup torque. Start cap is AC voltage ramped along with compressor voltage ramp then once compressor spins up to speed start cap is disconnected and triac dimmer is bypassed with a relay. When first used, it trains itself for first five startups with progressively lower initial ramp start voltage until it detects a near stall during startup. It saves the last reliable startup ramp which should yield the lowest startup surge current.

This is nice that it is a VFD most soft start units are just delay timers to cut the FLA down

i have been looking around for a teardown/open up video of one of these.. i was curios if i might be able to just make one instead of paying a few hundred for one.. but seeing this i am leaning towards it may be worth just buying as that seems beyond my capabilities

Mounted mine inside the A/C housing.

Problem with that is then your shielding the bluetooth antenna and can't talk to it.

This is way too complex. I watched many other DIY similar units build for fraction of cost. Lot of people buy this unit since their generators can not even start one A/C unit. I have start capacitors on my two A/C units and I can run both A/C units of one 3KW generator / 120V. But have to manually start second unit with pre-spinning fan. I believe that I can run both A/C units thanks to having start capacitors. Due to need of manual operation, I been doing research on soft starters and there are several solutions for under $40. Thank you for sharing your video. It helped me to understand that Micro-Air's soft starter is not magic and they charge $300 because they can. I will now definitely build my own unit. Do you think this unit worth over $300? What made this unit expensive? About half the cost of the compressor itself?

that is the same question that lead me here.. i do think it could be much more simplified and does not need blue tooth so they should at least sell a lower frills version but i have not found anyone showing how someone could build one for 20 bucks and some scrap computer parts

But you trim add into yellow from box to yellow unit. This box help works reduse amps take less amp- start up maintance. Cut off on about 5 times day. Temp inn. House 76!. Nice cool.after 4 yrs work on old 1950 wood fram house. Yes blow inn. Insulation.3foot above rafters . Yes new roof I add regvent at same time plus 4 attic fans on timer move inn same way toword vent. I went into attic peak day. Attic just cool as inside house .fans regvent movedead spot heat! Must. Inn ever room ceil fans . Summer clock .rotation (winter counter clock move heat easy keep warm. Inn. Close area berween mainsuckion. Add extra suction return. All balance work great 4 yrs past old house temp use be. Inn. 90s. Ouch old window units high cost $450.00! Now add a/c unit central air . Add extra duck return. Now temp 76. Inn. Side house. Have Gexa ele 9.85kw. Uage was 3.000 now about 1.900 amp use on 4 ton 16 series keep filters clean ..first time il take 2-3 days balance out includevpull all trap heat out. Get extra a/c filters.
