Thank you! This was quite the rabbit hole, from first learning about how this was not a Kyuss original song, then getting directed to a demo from reddit, and now to this from a KZbin comment from that demo video... Thanks again!

1987-1989 videos are the most fascinating because it's so clear to see which companies kept up and which ones fell behind. Look at what H-Street was putting out at the same time. Shackle Me Not and Public Domain came out this same year and the differences are stark, and it's funny because an H-Street guy (Ron Allen) clearly used his throw away footy for this video and he is still by far the best street skater in it. I saw an Alva video that came out around the same time and it was clear their fate as well. Skating will never see progression like that again over a span of a couple years, not even close. Now just imagine if Instagram was around back then what the progression would've been like.
@wendaltvedt4673
@wendaltvedt4673 Жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. They're still doin bonelesses, acid drops, basic vert tricks like one-foot airs and ditch carving. Meanwhile H-Street guys were doin flip tricks, no-complies, big handrails, 360 varials on vert. H-Street and Powell kids were way ahead of these guys in progression.

@jasondashney "Skating will never see a progression like" what was happening in 1988??? Did you quit skateboarding in 1990? I'm in my 50's, I started skateboarding in 1977 and never quit so I've watched it's progression for 47 years. 1988 pales in comparison to just a few short years later in the early 90's with the introduction of skating switch. THAT was a bona-fide revolution in which all the pros - both vert and street - had to relearn all their tricks skating switch. From the pros it trickled down to all skateboarders. To this very day switch tricks carry more gravitas than almost every other regular trick. The introduction of switch tricks in the early 90's was a HUGE leap forward in progression with a giant lasting influence on skateboarding today.

@@misterslats the difference between 1989 and 1992 was the difference between basing a whole line around a garbage 360 flip on flat vs giant double kink rails and switch bs flips down stairs. I'm not arguing that in the least. I based my comment on the fact that the Alva video had guys who didn't look like they could even ollie on flat, or barely up a curb. Two years later people were jumping down handrails and doing full cab back lips on flatbars. That's dirt roads and straw roofs in the country to paved cities in 24 months. The other comment left here by misterslats outlines it perfectly. To me the 1991-1993 era was more like going from fax machines to smartphones. Equally crazy, but less visually striking to me. It's a matter of opinion though. I get where you are coming from. I have been skating since Public Domain (1988), was sponsored for years, and can still do switch 360 flips so I'm pretty in tune with what's going on these days and I think skating is in by far the best state it's ever been in. Progression has significantly slowed, but that's unders tandable. Today, everything is 'cool'. There's a market for all types and I think it's great.
@misterslats
@misterslats 10 ай бұрын
@@jasondashney I actually liked that Alva "Backyard Annihilation" video. None of those guys progressed beyond any of the tricks they were doing in that video. In 1994 Craig Johnson, Fred Smith, and Dave Duncan couldn't do a switch trick if their life depended on it. There was definitely a dividing line forced by trick progression in the early 90's that ended countless careers.

@@misterslats Hell Jason Lee said he retired because he could see the writing on the wall and he was really good. I think today skateboarding is in the best place it's ever been because there's room for absolutely every type of skating.

What a great clear upload of this classic video! Highly appreciated. I skated nearly every single day from 1986-1992. A friend of mine had this on VHS when it came out, and I couldn't get enough of it. It was so much more raw and 'real' than the other skate videos up until then. The memories and emotions this brings back...

First skate video I ever bought. UK import so getting these was a big deal as decent skate shops were few and far between. On a technical level it got old really quick but it had 'something' and as a kid new to skating at least some of stuff in there was learnable. By the time Hokus Pokus came out you started to realise you'd never be able to do some of that stuff but stuff before that had you out and practising thinking maybe you could be pro.....In the end I actually got pretty good busting down flights of 10 but my body wore out and the fun went out of it once I cou;dn't keep up. Happy times whilst it lasted.

Thank you for uploading. Corona has me learning all about my skate past.6:43 that invert transfer was terrifying. The street section looked like a blast. 17:22 dudes on a longboard that's bonkers. 18:30 is a low low 540 holy smokes, his heads like below the coping. Wish it were still cool to dress this way. Hate the hate on pads. The ramp in a barn attic is some super incognito mode activated type set up. 20:53-23:30 the street section with tables and rails and the guys demolishing that hip at the ditch is a perfect session for me and the crew. The guy throwing backflip invert touches 27:22 is crazy. 28:32 Kona In Florida much love. That ozrkibg kit at 34:08 looks both h amazing to ride and like a 5 year old drew it on MS paint at the same time. That street session looks fun just carving and busting high ass ollies. Believe its Ron Allen, dude's style is classic. 47:08 that beauty is timeless lucky dudes that tapped that.the music credits with pictures of the artist and which part they were featured on was a real treat at the end
@fernandomaron87
@fernandomaron87 9 ай бұрын
The low 540 is insane. I remember seeing that barn ramp in some other random skate film of that era, it looked like a Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie set or something. The blond chick at 47:08 was Gator's girlfriend, dude was definetly bedding some beauties before everything fell apart.

Molecules of Motion is unbeatable, but this video is a nice change from that feels more in line with the way skateboarding was heading in 1988. I’m no skate historian, but this seems to have the DIY low budget aesthetic which would become the norm for skate vids over the next 25 years, so I get what they were doing with this. Molecules probably took a lot longer to shoot and was already a bit dated when it came out, so this film seems more on trend (for 1988) with less arty interludes and more skating, which is probably what skaters wanted by 1988. Great vid! But I still watch Molecules more often.
