When standing, they expand easier, and are not resting on the lungs, giving them more space to inflate and deflate. Since singing requires a lot of breathing control, obviously it can be harder to sing singing down. If you notice, sitting is actually more seen in some jazz cafes, but even then they sit on stools, because it forces the singer to sit forward and straight, which is more like standing. Also, if you look at performances where people sing sitting down, a lot may raise their head or extend their neck when reaching higher. This also accommodates for better airflow.

Onew is really the type that when he isn’t expressly given a solo part, is content to harmonize or become a background vocal during a performance.
