I know it’s weird I’m fangirling over something this simple, but I love the fact that all of the alternate Gumi’s outfits have one part of their outfit (an accessory) that’s red, and generally all the same outfit. Gumi 2 has the hair clip, Gumi 3 has the heart glasses, Gumi 4 has the bow on the back of her hair, Gumi 5 has the heart on her leg, Gumi 6 has the hairband, Gumi 7 has the collar, Gumi 8 has the bracelets, Gumi 9 has the flower, and Gumi 10 has the two hairbands to make her twin braids. All the way in the end, the emotionless Gumi (and the original) has the goggles Gumi’s character usually wears.

Theres another big part to it, as well. You literally dont know the others exist until being told by a professional, theres an amnesiac wall your brain puts up between each one to stop you knowing that the others exist, because they were formed to hold trauma and if you know of them that means it isn't working. You even feel a lot of doubt when you do find out. Each one has different life experiences and different memories, and are functionally different people.

Since music can have different meaning to everyone, I feel that this song is about the "Me" that lives in other peoples mind based on the way we interact with others. That's why these "personalities" don't know they exist to each other as we don't act the same around everyone and we don't even notice it. We create these fake personas to hide the way we feel or think but doing so lose track of the "real you". Anyways, this song is awesome and so is GUMI.

Imagine my surprise when this was one of my all time favourite songs when I was a young teen struggling with undiagnosed DID, and coming back to it now with a proper diagnosis :') That said, I can't imagine how painful it would be to force every alter but one down, especially to impress someone. Poor Gumi. Not only is that not how it works, but it would absolutely be super damaging to everyone involved. I think I'll stick to being honest about who, and how, we are.

@montblue8 жыл бұрын
As I understood, GUMI fell in love with a boy and, after being rejected, she became emotionless and then started to act like someone she made up in her mind. That's because, since she's emotionless, she doesn't have any feelings to guide her or give her social tact; so a stereotypical behavior does the trick, 'cause its emotions are already premeditated. As time goes on, she starts to adopt new characters, maybe for mere curiosity, and that's possible, since she doesn't have any attachment to the previous one(s) - 'cause it's(they're) also fake. However, she ended up falling in love with a different boy, who, aware of her discordant behavior, told her that he can't love "all of her personalities", meaning that he can't love someone who acts so differently all the time. I think the smile she gave at 2:48 was because, even though others think she has "multiple personalities", she feels like she has none, since she has no true feelings, only projections made on made up characters. I feel that, in the end, the true her, the one that has no feelings, noticing how involved she started to get with the boy despite her lack of emotions, decides to take all of her characters down, remembering the pain she felt when dumped by the first boy. Now, acting like her again and, probably, giving zero fucks about the other ten GUMI's crush, she's safe from the danger of dealing with love. But, well, it can be about multiple personality disorder or anything else, so. xD
@PatrickT228 жыл бұрын
I think the GUMI that's actually singing this is the first made up personality, or the 2nd Gumi. The count actually starts from three if you look carefully, but also says "The first me." So my guess is that this second personality is telling us the story and is completely aware of all the multiple personalities. The 'first me' is seen at 0:30 looks different to the emotionless Gumi though, so perhaps the one she settled on was not her original self but the emotionless one, the one she considers to be her true self? At least, that's my interpretation.
@montblue8 жыл бұрын
PatrickT22, yeah, that's what I meant when I said "after being rejected, she became emotionless". It was her new, but true, personality, so instead of "Gumi 2", I'd call it "Gumi 2.0"? xD After that is when she began to come up with all the others.
@PatrickT228 жыл бұрын
Perhaps since she was emotionless, those locked away emotions needed a vent of sorts, so they cropped up in eight new personas, which are numbers 3-10? I hear some people graph emotions into eight categories, so the numbers fit well there!

The lyrics: describe DID. “it was done to protect herself”, “the personalities don’t share memories”, etc. outright says “multiple personality disorder” (old name for dissociative identity disorder) Some commenters: i don’t think it’s about a dissociative disorder… i think she’s faking it *note: yes there is some outdated terminology and it’s not perfectly realistic but this is one of the least depressingly harmful examples of (at least coded) DID in media that i know of so it sucks that some people are rejecting it as even a possibility*

Haha no. First of all, DID isn't universally clinically accepted. Second, while it is suggested by psychoanalysts that multiple personalities develop as a dissociative protective response to trauma that one *cannot physically escape from*. We're talking a kid cowering in a corner being belted by an abusive parent. Not fucking one-sided love. So yeah, she's faking it.
@BlueLover7075 жыл бұрын
I know the description says differently, but. I think the "obedient girl" is actually the first split. It'd explain a lot. The "original"/host is actually the Gumi with the glasses/goggles on her head. That's why in the beginning (before the lyrics start) the glasses are shown. This also explains why when Gumi is talking about the "tenants" inside of her, the "obedient" one is shown among them. It also explains why she was able to split so easily. DID is a complex disorder, but it's said that in order for a split to first happen, the person has to go through repeated trauma. And not stuff like "oh all my relationships keep failing :(" or "oh my friends keep leaving me out of their hangout sessions :(" but ACTUAL deep trauma like repeated abuse. BUT, AFTER THAT, it's very easy for the person to have a split (this is when new identities show up) from smaller, stressful situations such as the failed love that is mentioned in the video. Also, it just makes the ending happier because that means the host is the one who stays dominant :P
@eden_marie4 жыл бұрын
I know this was 10 months ago. I'm sorry. I support your opinion but I think that the second personality/first split is the one who is aware and is the one that stays or whatever, because the song introduces the first her, and then the countdown starts at 3, completely skipping 2. I know some stuff about d.i.d but not a lot so if I don't know something please correct me. maybe she completely forgot who she first was, so the strongest personality/personality with the highest self esteem, like that or whatever, took over and the other personalities got destroyed. or maybe she still remembered her first personality and got bored of it so she picked a different one. I don't think I have any disorder but sometimes I'll get really sick of myself so I'll just completely change how I look, how I act, who I am around, what I like, so maybe it's kinda like that. or maybe the 1st is actually the first split and the second one is her original and it isn't mentioned because they wanted to explain how the first split came to be. idk lol

idk if I got that this song was abt someone with DID as a kid lmao ,,,, looking at the lyrics though i feel like it's a bit of a misrepresentation of how DID actually works, like from what I know it's a response to trauma at a young age, so her developing it from heartbreak is just kinda... odd to me? theres a few other things I'm kinda ?? about but that was the one I was the most confused by but I dont have it so I'm not really an expert on it!! so take this w a grain of salt lmao
@werisekk33 жыл бұрын
I feel like she just hides behind different "personalities". Judging by the end - "I am just good old me" - it sounds like she could control herself. Now I am not an expert on DID works either but I am pretty sure you can't just control it like this. Also, "she built up new characters" suggests that she straight up plays pretend, maybe as a way to distract herself from pain (three refused to accept the memories), maybe because she thinks the breakup was her fault and is looking for a better persona (five behaved like a completely different person), but from the way she just decides to go back to her "good old self", it doesn't sound like a disorder to me, but like a bad coping mechanism and maybe loss of identity.
@parasiticinvasion53703 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I noticed that as well. The song contradicts itself quite a bit in the way it portrays Gumi’s “alters”. At first it makes it sound like she intentionally built up multiple personas to help herself deal with heartbreak, but then it goes down the route of saying she has DID. Like you said, DID can only develop from extreme, repeated trauma during early childhood. Since Gumi is in her late teens/a young adult in this song it would be impossible for her to develop DID. It’s such a shame that this song is a misrepresentation of DID, since tbh this goes so hard.

right?? im glad people with did like the song, but the ending is very misrepresenting.. while integrating is normal and valid, it doesnt happen at the drop of a hat. I don't consider it weird that a split happened due to something fairly light like an seemingly unrequited crush, but if it means that the split happened BECAUSE of it, and not because of repeated trauma (like how did usually forms), than its just really misinformed. I like this song but i have conflicting feelings... theres also the fact that the ending implies she can control herself, so it could just be a personality disorder? Not necessarily a dissociative disorder? but then it says that they don't share memories so?? its just really hard because there is no author confirmation.

used to be obsessed with this song when i was 13, but thats not what im here to say. i recently found out im autistic and while thinking about my past experience masking in the past, a big theory kinda popped into my head. what if in this song, gumi just has undiagnosed autism and to go through life without causing herself mental anguish, she has to mask in 10 different ways? so there's 10 masks and the real her that she hides to navigate life more easily. Then, she meets and falls in love with that one boy that sees straight through her masks no matter which one she uses on him. He lets her know that he doesn't want to love the masks she puts on, but the real her. He wants to love her full autistic self. In my experience, having to show my real self after masking so much does make me panic, hence why the song gets more fast paced at the third verse (might be different for other autistic people though). For the last chorus, she finally understands that all of those masks she made and used to cater to everyone else/not get hurt aren't needed anymore, so the real her smiles, finally feeling safe enough to come back out. In the end, the masks gets destroyed because she found someone that helps practice unmasking and let the real her live and love. Not saying she'll never use those masks again, but if she does, it'll only be some fragments of them that won't completely hide the real her.

Tip for people with DID: If you tell someone you have DID and they say they can only love one/some of your alters (especially if it's "The Real One™", ugh), they're not the one. Being parts of one whole-and yes, that is scientifically what DID is, ONE dissociative identity-means that you deserve to be respected as one whole. Alters' individual boundaries should be respected, and it's okay to have different feelings on different alters, but if they decide they can't respect the whole? Then get outta there. Also please stop spreading DID misinfo in the comments my god 😅
@RotheAlien5 ай бұрын
I don't think this song might be about DID (tho if it is I stand corrected) but more about someone that changes how they act every time depending on the person to feel accepted. And when faced with the guy she likes she tries every different act so that he can like her but when he sees right through her he tells her to stop acting in different ways every time and to just be herself (hence the "I can only love ine of you") but the DID interpretation is so interesting too. Also yeah if someone knows about your mental condition and tells you "well I can't keep track of all this just choose one" eff them to the moon and back😂

When I first got into Vocaloid I was about 7, I heard this song somewhere and I really liked it but then I somehow lost it. Then out of nowhere, I was watching a Minnemi video on 100 iconic Vocaloid songs and when this came up I literally couldn't believe it lol You know those dads at the military reuniting with their family? That's me with this song. If you're curious, I'm 15 now, so I had basically been searching for this song for about *8* years.

I think this song is about DID. in the description, it says the second personality (alter would be the medically accurate term, MPD/multiple personalities is really outdated terminology) was her first "split", which is a medical term for when someone with DID/OSDD-1 gets another, new alter, due to high stress or re-traumatization. So, as a child, she got DID from trauma, and as time went on she split until there were ten of her. Alters can all integrate together, but it usually takes a lot of therapy, so she could just be hiding her alters?
@minty1114 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think so too

I don't think the song is specifically about DID, it doesn't really seem like it but maybe
@Krowuss3 жыл бұрын
most likely yeah - or because it's a song and the storyline has to be contained to 3~5 minutes, the reintegration process was just magikked and ba-bam, whole again by the power of love.
@cybergalacticnova3 жыл бұрын
Definitely DID, but whoever wrote the song is fairly misinformed on it, sadly.
@liquidmantle2 жыл бұрын
Why are you talking about ''medically accurate terms'' when the actual medical community doesn't acknowledge DID as an actual real disorder lmao. This entire disorder is an outdated concept, no self-respecting psychiatrist would diagnose it post late 1970s. I know technically it's still in the DSM due to external pressure from the judicial system/military-industrial complex, but nobody in medicine actually believes it exists, and it has proven to be false time and time again through rigorous peer-reviewed research. BTW, ''repression'' of trauma in psychology, is also outdated, based on falsified data from late 19th century psychoanalysts.

This song is giving me the feeling that the producer of copycat knew the producer of this song. They are similar stories. Copycat is a song about someone completely changing their personalities for love once she realizes that their crush doesn’t like them. Then there is this song that is giving me the exact same vibe. Please tell me if I’m wrong.

I feel like she doesn't actually have DID? Just my interpretation but in the past she had her heart broken by someone, leading her to separate her personalities in a way to protect herself, but I heard that DID is something that usually occurs when someone is quite young like a child, and she must be older if she already engaged in relationships (not trying to invalidate people who developed DID when they were older). For me, I believe she is just acting like she has DID so that not just any guy would come to like her, yes, it is also a way to protect herself, but not nearly to the extent of actually having DID. Also call me an optimist but I think the guy really does like her, and sees through her multiple personality act. When he tells her (2:33) that he's only choosing one person (her), he's also smiling when he does it (2:48), it's like he's smiling knowingly, seeing through her ruse and trying to get her to admit it. To add, at 2:51 onwards where she sings "The 10 people inside, their reason for being is... what?" and we come back to the reason to why she tried to act as if she had DID, which was because she was heartbroken. Now that she has met someone who likes all of her, why would she keep performing this act? Also it's been years and I'm pretty sure someone already commented this theory and I just forgot

I don't have a crush. But I still never share the same personality. My true self never appeared to anyone, not even my mom. I can't help it. Idk what to do. I suit myself to what the people I'm talking to would like me to be. Sometimes I'm a wild class clown/trouble maker. Sometimes I'm a polite calm and matured person. Sometimes I'm a good advisor and a kind person. Sometimes I'm a sleepy head. And sometimes I'm just simply silent. It has been almost a year since the pandemic started and I haven't gone to school. I have no idea if I'm just gonna be silent like I am now or will I correct myself to the liking of the other person. I got no clue. I can't help it. I have absolutely no control over it and it just happens in a blink on an eye. I might be all social and charming until the other person leaves and I'm just with you. I'll maybe sound chill and easy-going. But the moment someone else talks to me I'll turn aggressive and energetic.. Is that a personality disorder? Or is it just because I hate myself in general? Idk and I don't want to ignore it but I have to...

I don’t know if we’ve listened to this song before (probably have) but man it hits hard. (We’re in therapy for DID, not diagnosed yet) Looking at other people’s theories on this song we thought of our own; Gumi *was* abused during childhood, the first alter wasn’t the “obedient girl” but Gumi herself, this is shown in the very beginning when you see her goggles spinning. During her childhood she goes through trauma and splits her other alters, as the song progresses and they grow up and all fall in love with the same guy. But because of his constant rejection (“i can only love one of you”) ect. (which is blatantly shitty on his part) they hide themselves out of protection (this is *not* the same as fusion or dormancy) and have Gumi become the host instead. (To me it looked like Gumi, who is most likely the “core”/“original” aka first alter, didn’t front often (which *_is_* possible) so the other 10 took care of her day to day life.) Gumi still has DID, the others are hiding themselves out of protection and to please the other guy (which is harmful but yeahhh) - N & Damion influence (probably lol)
