Gun Disarm Techniques for Handguns and Shotguns: In this video Mr James of Charm City Karate demonstrates the key gun disarm techniques for both handguns and long guns (rifles and shotguns). It covers inside, outside, immediate, and rear disarms for handguns and inside and outside for long guns.
Since these techniques are universal throughout most of the later techniques, this video provides a way to break them down and practice them individually.

The reason I advise not stepping during a gun disarm is that feet create a large motion that is easy for the gunman to see; it's a big "tell" and you get shot. Hands are small and fast, and moving / twisting just your head or body out of the way as you disarm is a much smaller movement. There will be footage up soon from our Air-soft gun disarm class which demonstrates it.

Did you see this on @MythBusters? Dual wield pistols is pretty much a movie/ video game thing - hard to be accurate with the off hand, and it throws off your good hand. That being said, I might pursue this in the interest of martial science. See if there is a way to do it...hmm...

wilddog73 by 'top' do you mean the slide? If the gun fires while your thumb is on the slide, yeah, you might get cut...but I'm willing to trade a cut thumb for control of the weapon.

It might happen, but I have to say that in all of our practice with air-soft guns, if the gun goes off, it goes off on the initial movement - by the time your second hand in engaged, the subject's finger is no longer near the trigger. And your's shouldn't be either. But that's why we practice, right?

The best part of the outside disarm is if his finger is in the trigger guard you will mangle his finger pretty good. These disarms look more like jui jitsu than kenpo. Some kenpo movements but no striking.

I agree 100%. As I said in the other video I will train the more simple disarms as it would be my life on the line. I dont like kenpo gun or knife disarms to be honest. Not a slam on kenpo as I love kenpo just wont trust my life to those complex movements against a weapon.

You should do a video on a dual wielding pistol disarm. I can't imagine trying to use Kenpo (or anything in martial arts) when trying to disarm an attacker dual wielding pistols. The attacker can probably shoot you before you can even finish the disarm. This would be a great help :)

Constructive input. On your inside or outside front disarm, the initial hand should go for the wrist and not the gun. This serves to purposes. First, and of the most importance, is that if the person has a sympathetic neurological response and pulls his arm back you still get the gun. Second, gripping around the wrist can act as a fulcrum aiding the second hand. Hope this helps.

It is a good technique. In my own opinion. In a real situation,the criminal would not stand there like a statue and let you take his gun from him. It will be fast movements,a fight and a disarm in a stress situation. T The reality of disarming a criminal in a REAL situation. But it is a good technique. He just showing it in slow motion just for viewers. But I think it should be practice a 1000 times in a real high stress situation.

Pretty good basic video. I don't like the "arm wrap" (whether it's trapping it in the arm pit, applying a lock, whatever) disarms because the gun has too much movement, plus you're more tied up to the bad guy, which is problematic for retaliation and multiple attackers. Hands only is the best. Glad to see you grab the gun and not the wrist, as it has motion remaining if you grab the wrist, then go for the gun. This method is also advantageous because it can done with only one hand if necessary.

Erm, I believe I mentioned that you need to be able to touch the weapon without moving your feet. If he is 5-10 feet away you gives him yo' money. Or get shot. Seriously, if he's a professional with a weapon, you will have no opportunity to disarm the weapon. But I must also ask, what have you done to be in a situation where a professional has drawn down on you? Crooks put the weapon close because it is power to them, and they want you to feel their power, that's what gives you the opportunity.

This would only work for some guns that require a special about for force to pull the trigger. If its an electric trigger, hair trigger or a sensitive trigger the shooter will always win. Also most people hold hand guns with two hand.

I know this might be a bit late to ask you, but can you also do the Harries technique w/ knife or a flashlight? Its for home defense, for clearing my house if an intruder breaks in. I'm not going to engage them and act like a badass, but only as a last resort. You should cover a video with a two handed pistol grip. Love these techniques though! Been using it when I practice, simple and effective!

I understand your rationale. I enjoy the challenge - I'm working on some ideas. Video to follow in the not too distant future. Then the trolls will come out with "no one attacks with two pistols!" and "that would never work". As long as you and I understand it's being done for a "what if" scenario I'm cool with it. I know a Black Belt that did a personal form with giant soup ladles.

Ah, well, if he's close enough, you always have a chance. So, if we're going to set the scenario that he's within disarm range, AND using a two handed grip (maybe he saw it on TV, or his hands are shaking so he reinforces his grip), then you absolutely have a chance. The immediate disarm will still work, so would a "slap & trap". We'll have a video for this up soon, since everyone keeps asking about different two handed scenarios.

If your opponent is trained enough to assume a proper grip on the firearm, he's probably smart enough to stand 10' off and be out of range of any disarm. Best defense against a disarm is distance.

Haowei Shi Hmm...that would make it exponentially harder. People have a hard enough time hitting a stationary target when they are still. I think if the shooter is moving, you should just move too, reduce the odds to nearly zero. ;) Or get good safety gear and try some things out with airsoft guns...

One way you can tell someone has ZERO tactical training: they try to use the attacker’s handgun against them. You don’t know a thing about it - is it loaded? Does it work? (Crime stats show that 60% of the time the answer is no). I would never want to point a weapon at someone I did not know the condition of. And fun fact: in many states, criminals intentionally keep the gun unloaded to receive lesser charges if caught. Folks, don’t be a victim. Be smart and stay alive.

How do any of these work against an attacker who actually has their finger on the trigger?.... every example the attacker here does not have a finger on the trigger....

+David Downs They work by getting your body off the line of the barrel (usually by moving both) so that when/ if the gun goes off, you don't get shot. The "bad guy" doesn't have his finger on the trigger because a) the trigger doesn't do anything and more importantly b) almost all disarms cause a break of the trigger finger. A lot of practice weapons don't have trigger guards on them anymore for safety; if you get ones that do have them, and you are serious about practicing, I recommend you dremmel them off. If you don't think they will work because no one has a finger on the trigger, please watch our AirSoft gun disarm video (or come to our next seminar). I promise by the end of that class, you *will* be able to do an effective disarm without being shot.

Well Bigdaddy, you'll notice it just says gun disarms, not Kenpo gun disarms. I don't think the Kenpo gun techniques are very practical, at least not how I learned them. These are good, and I make no style associations with them. And yes, he will be having the broken finger. He should not have pulled a gun on an honest citizen.

Hey there everybody... Please be careful with what you’ve “learned” in this video. I really don’t want to say anything that might be too negative or unfair about these guys. I just couldn’t ignore my concerns regarding this video.... My first piece of advice, if you’re going to watch videos for self-defense education, watch as many as you can find. You should eventually be able to distinguish the higher quality content for yourself. The second important thing you should know... I mean, REALLY KNOW! The odds of performing a successful disarm in the real world are extremely unfavorable to the self-defender. If you’re going to take the disarm option seriously, you must commit 100%. .... and… Seriously… Don’t try what you’ve “learned” here.... To be fair, these guys are not all wrong. But they’re not quite right either. Ok, I’m done now.

I understand where you're coming from, but the chances of encountering a trained shooter is unlikely, especially dual wielding pistols. Therefore in my opinion, dual wielding is not very practical and usually used by untrained shooters. For instance; the VA tech shooter had 15 rounds for his Glock and 10 rounds for his Walther. If he were accurate enough, he would've gotten more than half (35) of the total deaths/injuries (49) that he had caused without reloading. (CONT IN NEXT POST)

This only works in Hollywood… Realistically he would pull away and resist… Also if you think that when there is a gun at you you can think about which way your technique should go you will be disappointed… There is no time and there is adrenaline, also peripheral vision is gone so you not going to see anybody else to the side… Full speed and resistance is the only way to do it and see it works… I am willing to volunteer to test any method people say works to back up my statements and my methods. I do this to adapt and make sure these methods work so that it will save people when they unfortunately have to do it.

I disagree, for several reasons. First, these disarms were taught to me by people that teach police, military, and government agencies how to do disarms. They are the same ones that these people do in the field to save their lives. They work. Second, and you can watch the linked video above, we did all these against airsoft guns - and at point blank they HURT - and they all work: meaning they can be done before you get shot, even when the other person knows what to look for. So, your methods may work as well - but don't try to tell me ours don't. As for adrenal stress: I've worked both sides of the Bulletsuit. Different people have different reactions and tolerance levels; you want the full rundowns, come take the seminar.

Charm City Karate Thanks for response… I agree that these techniques may work even 99% of the time. The problem is the 1% when there is resistance and then this does not work. I have seen this happen, and the idea is to use a method that works 100% of the time and even if it is not done perfectly it is still works. It is easy to disarm someone even with an airsoft gun before they shoot if they don't resist, but this is not reality. Also just because it is used by police, military, and government agencies does not mean it is the best way. I have had police officers and military personnel agree that some of the techniques are not perfect and they don't change them because they don't like change. I agree adrenal stress affects people differently, part of why we need to train properly. Thanks for the invite, I do workshops and seminars myself and may take you up on it in the future. The immediate disarm still works, the inside and outside...not so much. They _can_ work, but I wouldn't do them for real; I've done them in seminars for "proof of concept" type demonstrations, but that's it. If you have a gorilla with a two hand grip, the inside and outside are definitely NG.
