Back in my time it was called MOUT (military operation in urbanized terrain). I was a new private, clearing rooms with a 249; I truly HATED life back then. Troops now have it so much better than we did, but there were no good slings for the 249, so moving from building to building was BRUTAL! The SF guys instructing the course made us hold our weapons at the high-ready and it was just a burn-out session each day, for 2 straight weeks. It's a distant memory now but it was putting us to the breaking point and I'm always amazed that I made it through all that. My body is definitely without injury and it's something I always bring up to the new generation of potential recruits that want to enlist. Take care of yourself and don't ignore the hints your body is sending you.

Speaking of the AK-74 round, it wasn't until I played _Into the Radius_ that I realized how teeny-tiny the 5.45x39 is. Holding it in my fingers in VR at real-world scale, being able to give it a good lookover, yeah, it's surprisingly small! That's probably why you can cram 30 of 'em into a magazine. Even if that does mean that buying enough of them to fill all your magazines costs you the shirt off your back and ensures you never use the gun in anything other than semi-auto!

One of the 3 bids for the NGSW was this bullpup thing which was cool enough by itself, but what was really interesting was their take on the 6.8mm round. They made a round that had good stopping power, ballistics and it was 30% lighter than its competitors, also the plastic it was made of drastically reduced overheating in the weapon. It's been awhile since I was looking at this information so take it with a grain of salt and do your own research if you're interested. I'm gonna go look at it just to see that beautiful rifle again lol.

Sig Sauer with it's MCX Spear along with M250 in .277 fury won ngsw. It is in a similar package in service M4/M16 so at least training will be somewhat familiar. To achieve required performance Sig has to use hybrid steel and brass case so weight saving is there but not significant enough. While GDLS/ True Velocity bullpup rifle uses a longer barrel with lower pressure polymer cartridge to achieve required performance, it has even more weight savings in cartridge. Lastly the Textron cased polymer cartridge puts the bullet into the case surrounded by powder. It has the highest weight saving but uses more powder as the bullet needs extra charge to be pushed out to conventional bullet position so that the rest of the gases from the charge are used to push the bullet. So the amount of weight saving between it and True Velocity polymer cased ammo is not significantly much more but definitely significantly more than Sig's offering. The initial program LSAT which searched for a lighter weight alternative to M249 morphed into NGSW where instead of having a lower weight weapon and cartridge the weight saving is invested again in performance which lead to a lighter battle rifle cartridge than 7.62x51 NATO but a heavier rifle as one can cheat physics only so much. Even with its increased performance ,.277 fury cannot penetrate full power rifle rated plates. But with its advanced optic enemy will be outranged along with easier shots to unprotected and less protected areas, and with its lighter weight than 7.62x51 at least soldiers can carry a meaningful amount of ammo, but still less than 5.56x45mm. The biggest achievement of the NGSW program is the optic, followed by the cartridge then both the guns. Even with advanced optic a soldier will need more training to make those long shots along with training to tame the recoil of the rifle and MG.

Just wanted to point out a nitpick, the PKP Pecheneg has a "slide-to-side" optic for loading purposes. It's not a magnifier like an EOTech G33/G45. You HAVE to slide the optic rail to the side on a PK-series machine gun to get the dust cover up to reload the weapon.
@TakNuke

Although 7.62x54r is slightly longer thus larger powder space, 7.62x51nato operates at much higher pressure so performance is similar so who ever has match grade ammo wins. But west has more availability of high performance bullets and powders for 7.62x51 nato so here it wins.

Is a BAR considered a squad automatic weapon?
@casualsatire5739
@casualsatire5739 Жыл бұрын
In modern terminology, either that or an automatic rifle I guess (in the same sense as an M27 IAR or RPK). BAR itself means Browning Automatic Rifle. The terminology at that time was fairly fluid and inconsistent. In British and Canadian manuals, for example, the Sten was sometimes referred to as a machine carbine. The Lewis gun is another example. It was originally referred to as an automatic rifle (not "assault rifle"), even though its definitely an LMG. Neither original description is accurate in terms of its mechanics, but understanding has evolved over time.
@TakNuke
@TakNuke Жыл бұрын
It's more of an automatic rifle it's only with FN-D that it has some use as lmg but is let down by 20 round mags unless you get FN-DA1 in 7.62x51mm which can use 30 round FN FAL mags. It's much superior to FAL heavy barrel automatic rifle.

Hey dude. Move to Alberta (if you don’t already). Times are changing here and we’d be glad to have ya. Even with our dumb laws, you can still get a decent selection of awesome semiautomatic rifles. Also, with the exception of suppressors, we don’t have as many regulations against attachments, which is awesome. Fun fact: You can own shorter pump-action shotguns in Canada then you can in Texas. IMO, the firearm industry should be an unregulated market.
@JTTTTT850

You can still have guns to a certain degree. Get out and shoot, run drills, and time yourself. Either buy a shot timer or use your phone to video yourself and then check the times so you have data to reference for how fast you’re going. It’s better to be competent with a 12 gauge pump action or a revolver than to be incompetent with everything.

Why not make every rifleman a marksman?
@Camino377
@Camino377 Жыл бұрын
Technically speaking, they are. At least in the Marines and Army, you must qualify at least as a "Marksman" in training. As for why not everyone is a 'Designated Marksman', it's different roles. A marksman can't carry as much ammunition as a rifleman, so they aren't as effective is typical engagements. On the other side, they can be very effective on targets beyond 400+ meters, whereas your typical infantry might not.

@@allanturmaine5496 Keeping your enemy suppressed allows your forces to maneuver more freely. It prevents them from moving so you can move into position for an assault or call in air support. As far as 'waste', it's estimated that for every combatant killed over the last 15 years, the US fired anywhere from 250,000 - 300,000 rounds of small arms ammunition. Additionally, it depends heavily on where the engagement takes place. Most modern firefights are in rural, remote places where you never even see the enemy. If you've never seen them before, I highly recommend looking up Funker530 on KZbin, a ton of combat footage from the last 15 years.

Stop adding squeaks over the swear words. These are veterans. They swear a lot. It's distracting to hear a rubber duck noise three times in a sentence. Quit it.
