There isn't any 50 round boxes of defensive ammo available in my area. I have always felt that this was a way to jack up the price of this ammo and for no other reason. We are getting ripped off every time we purchase defensive ammo. If the ammo makers want to offer a discount for LE, that's fine but make it available for everyone.

To Chad's point about a potential difference in the quality of ammo available to civilians, that is especially true for Military standardized ammo. I believe it's by law that military-contracted ammo (think M855 or Mk 262) can only be sold to civilians if the batch was pulled because it didn't meet the QC standard by the military. So basically we're getting factory seconds, even if it's still much better ammo than the other stuff available for the price

I believe that's what the X designates in the code. Like XM855
@DopamineSink
@DopamineSink 3 жыл бұрын
From an article in 80-lower: "Curious what all the "M"s and "X"s means? Simple: The "M" in M193 and M855 stands for "military". This denotes the ammunition is produced to military specifications. When you're shopping around for ammo, you may or may not see 5.56 NATO listed as M855 or M193, even if it's Federal American Eagle. It might say XM855 and XM193. XM855 and XM193 are not special versions of military ammo. They're not "second-rate" versions of military 5.56 NATO, either. They're simply rounds of ammunition that have been set aside for civilian use, instead of being shipped off to the armed forces. That's it. We even called Federal Premium to confirm this. Federal says that some "M" munitions are placed on the civilian ("XM") manufacturing line for insignificant reasons: They produced too much "M" ammo and need to sell through it, the paint on a green-tip is too thick or thin, there is extra sealant around the primer, or some other reason that in no way hurts the performance of the ammo in question. Whether you buy XM or M, rest assured that your 5.56 ammo will perform to the same standards." That makes more sense to me. It's a separate line with some "2nds" thrown in that, and not just rejected rounds. That would be MILLIONS of rejected rounds.
@derpcon4212
@derpcon4212 3 жыл бұрын
@@DopamineSink I should've been more clear that I didn't mean to imply all the ammo are rejects. All it takes is the tiniest found "flaw" on a single round in a batch of thousands for that entire batch to be diverted to civilian sales, which like the article said can even include the thickness of the green tip paint. But what I'm far more interested in is the potential difference in quality of the Mk 262 Mod 1 ammo the military gets vs the overpriced variant of it we're able to get our civilian hands on. Since it's more of a specialty loading there's very rarely overruns on it and most clones of it aren't even to proper spec. I don't think Black Hills even sells it to civilians anymore, and the QC from IMI is all over the place.
@nemisous83
@nemisous83 3 жыл бұрын
Well its worth noting that not meeting QC doesn't nessisarily mean its worse ammo you figure they test only a 100 or so rounds of ammo from a 10,000 round batch and if more than a certain amount don't meet certain requirements the whole batch is rejected so more often than not the ammo you buy is generally up to milirary standard.

The dealer gets special pricing on the LE items that he is to pass on the to the First responders. Some distributers require you send a copy of the 4473 and the ID used to purchase the item proving you are complying with the requirements. Others reserve the right to request the information. If you are unable to provide it you will no longer be able to purchase and provide LE items. LE ammo also is purchased at a discounted price. There is really no way to track the ammo so some dealers will sell to anyone but make more off the LE do to cheaper cost. Hope this answers your questions.

I don't know of any law that says LE ammo is for LE only, to me it seems like a marketing trick to make people want the LE ammo. The sad truth is some FFLs are fudds, I had one refuse to give me copy of their FFL to send to Midway, which is against the law "You must keep your license posted and readily available for inspection", they also refused to order ammo for me from Midway after that, I do not support that FFL as a result. I've heard prosecutors try and paint someone as having a vigilante attitude or LE obsession if they use LE ammo or a LE trade in firearm.

Late to the party...When I was with the Kentucky State Police, we were issued duty ammunition by our armorer. The only time you would get clean, new duty ammunition was when we qualified. We used the "old" ammunition in qualification, and then was issued a new 50 round box. We carried Glock 22s, with 3-15 round magazines, and 1 in the chamber. So, there was 4 rounds left in the box. If we opted for additional firearms training or were slotted for it, we were given plain, old American Eagle .40 S&W. There was no wandering into the armory and just grabbing boxes. If I took my duty weapon to the range, off duty to train with, then that was on my dime.

But I did not see these gobs of primers. Made a few inquiries and nobody knew anything about these gobs of primers. I left the gun show disappointed but that afternoon I found out from a reliable source that gun show had 2 pallets of primers hidden in a backroom and they were trying to scalp people $300 a box for 1000 primers. I found out it was a sponsors of the gun show that we're doing this. I am convinced there is not shortages of ammo and primers or other reloading products. There's hoarding and scalping going on

In my opinion is, a bait and switch. Same ammo, but if it says LE 50 rounds, then see the same brand for 20 rounds. Most believe that is great stuff if the LE is this brand, I would buy more of the 20 round box. Like any items sold.

I have no firsthand knowledge of our LEO's ammo procurement regs and policies, but the Department does require officers to purchase their own sidearms or patrol rifles (SWAT and other special units I believe go through the Department). Still, I have not been blocked from buying LE spec ammo in the past, even before employment in the correctional field.

as far as the "LE ONLY" rounds, i think the ammo manufacturers are simply packaging the same, or virtually identical, ammo in separate boxes just so they can tell the government "See, Look! We're not selling the good stuff to them" but in fact, They are. even if at a premium sometimes. Is it ethical? no. But at the end of the day, its good for their profitablility.

I think it's a public conditioning, where in few months maybe in a year. All fire arms owners or anyone who want to purchase ammo WILL have to show ID. Like what some of these law makers want to make law, If law enforcement shows ID to purchase ammo why not the public.

My bet is that it is purely a marketing ploy regarding the ammo. Though I agree, I bet there are millions of new gun owners out there that range train will FMJ while loading defense rounds in their nightstand or carry option. I suspect LE buys the vast majority of that ammo.

It's a stupid marketing act from manufacturers to be honest. Everyone knows that when you buy in bulk things get cheaper. Why don't manufacturers (for example only) sell rounds at $1.00 per round in a 20 round box and $0.85 per round in a 50 round box (like for like ammo) but then offer the 50 round boxes to law enforcement at say $0.75 per round. I support giving back a little to law enforcement, I'm grateful they are out there so give them a little bit back to say thanks. It's like places giving free coffee to Police, Paramedics etc when they grab a meal or something to that example.
