This simple explanation of primers clears up the confusing array of primer types, and dispels some of the common wives-tales and myths associated with them. Know exactly how they work, narrow down what to buy and why, and learn about brand selection for the best accuracy in your gun. Learn whether you need magnum or match primers. Understand why trying different types and brands can actually make matters worse and even more confusing, and how to get back on track! Know what each is specifically designed for, and learn how to avoid common problems. Also learn how to improve their performance, how to tailor your loads specifically for different brands of primers, how to prepare case flash holes, why you should never "gauge' primer seating, and how primers are properly installed.

+ Itmechanicus- This in my mind is the classic quintessential New England understatement. It reminds me of spending time with my Grandfather and Great Grandfather. If it was worth their time telling; bet my bottom dollar it was worth my time to listen. I remember two story's among others my Grandfather told about welding an a fuel tank with gas inside and another story and about how tires looked while traveling 100 mph. My favorite was Great Grandfather's telling about how things were done while building the Kangamangus Highway. GunBlue490 harkens to a style that is timelessly classic. While slightly out of vogue with the masses taste for consumption currently it is no less relevant. Let us hope that we are witness to a return of sorts were "nothing changes under the sun" and people will once again see the value of eloquence in succinct meaningful conversation. GunBlue490, don't be concerned or apologetic in your approach or how your message is received. You ARE In your wheel house you Sir, and have brought me closer to home from the shores of Japan. My God continue to bestow his blessings upon you.

Very nicely done and helpful as well. Been reloading 58 years and still don't know it all by far! Lots of new stuff to learn as well as forgetting what's not true anymore. I especially found the difference between Lg and Sm pistol primers in Lg pistol cases such as 45 ACP useful. Anything for a tad more accuracy! Also appreciated cutting thru the fog on magnum and "standard" primers. Good job!

Had some primers burn, a pin hole through at the outer edge. These had been purchased during the last primer shortage. Upon inspection of my unused lot, there were those that were very flat and had a sharp transition to the cup's outer edge. There were others nicely rounded. It was very evident that the manufacturing set up was not consistent. So the manufacturer was very considerate and allowed me to return them and compensated me as well. Having one or more failures, etched the bolt face of my rifle. For the most part, the manufacturers of the components that we use do a great job!

Another great video Sir! I have one comment regarding the CCI #41 "NATO" spec military primers. You mentioned they were designed for the higher pressures of military ammo. This may be correct, but my understanding was they are made with thicker or harder cups; the reasoning being to reduce the chances of slam fires in military rifles with free floating firing pins. I use them in my AR15 and M16/M4 rifles. I'm sure you know this, but if you look at the primers on an unfired round that has previously been chambered (with force) in one of these rifles you will see a dimple in the primer where the firing pin has struck it with a fair amount of force. In rare instances this can cause the rifle to fire when using softer primers. I've been reloading since 1975 and I am still learning new things. I love your videos. They are well laid out and thorough. Thank you.

Another great summary of common sense reloading info!Here in Canada if I were to buy Winchester primers, they are designated as both regular and magnum on the box.You didn't mention the Berdan vs. Boxer in any detail. Not usually an issue unless you get range brass. Same with crimped primer pockets. Likely covered in your case prep video.
@GunBlue490
@GunBlue490 7 жыл бұрын
toy collector As in Canada, Winchester large pistol primers are designated in the US as dual purpose. Their large rifle primers are separately designated. The last thing I wanted to do was dissect the confounding and confusing individual offerings of each company. Rather, my intent was to educate, so that anyone, regardless of product individualities, would be armed with knowledge to intelligently make the appropriate assessments. I follow this theme fairly throughout my series of videos, because far more is gained by learning about how guns tick than examining wee specific brands that are typically the same features in a different lipstick color from one maker to another. Despite the countless offerings, and the many advertizing claims, there isn't much noteworthy difference between one brand of gun or ammo and another. Further, this video is for all-time, and as such, I confine my remarks to facts that relate to specific purposes, rather than specific brand models and packaging that can and do change over time. No, I did not cover Berdan primers in this video, which is really off-topic, and of little interest to my following. Except for an extremely small segment of the ammunition market in the US, Berdan primers are obsolete, and it doesn't take long for most folks to discover that they are not (conventionally) reloaded. I could go further in saying that they are Third World junk, but I won't say that.

Gee, you’re a great instructor; I have learned much. BTW, when so was on a Navy team shooting the 1911, we used magnum primers with Green Dot on advice of those RCBS fellows since that shotgun powder is slow burning and all the grains need to be ignited at once to burn by the end of the pistol barrel. Oh, my, they were accurate loads.

You never cease to amaze me, and I thank you for that. You've been reloading for 45 years, I've been reloading for 37 years. Your videos confirm all I've learned over the years and I enjoy renewing/revisiting information. Your presentation is perfect and "off the cuff", great stuff!! I reload for 4 rifles, 223, 22-250, 45-70 and 45-120. The first 3 use standard primers (small in the 223 of course) and the 45-120 uses magnum primers. Only on one occasion have I had an "oops" situation and that was loading the 120 with standard primers. The 120 uses BP exclusively and there would not have been a major problem because it is only used for "wow" factor, boom, smoke and flame, plus a smile on my face, lol. But after I'd loaded 50 I realised my mistake and pulled all pills, unloaded powder and fired off the primers, replaced them with the magnum primers and felt good. Was quite messy with the lube, but life's like that. Didn't forgive myself for a long time and had to go back to the double check which I do even today. This video has prompted me to do some further experimentation using different primers with my set loads in the 250 as it is my favourite rifle for both pests and at the range, just to see how much of a difference the primers make. Never considered it before as I've always had access to the same primers. Reloading is all about experimentation and you have just planted the seed required for investigation. Many many thanks to you, cheers from downunder :)

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I have been reloading for quite a while although not as long as you have but I am always wanting to know more and the more I learn the more I realize that I don't know ha. As you mentioned about the large and small primers in the. 45 was interesting I have a friend I wouldn't doubt it if you know him that I asked the same question about the. 45 primers and he said that back in the day 1911s were built sloppy for reliability in the military and large primers were more of a guarantee that the firing pin would hit the primers. Now that they are made with tighter tolerances the large primers are no longer necessary. Perhaps your explanations are more accurate thanks again for all the Information. PS Ron Power is the friend I am referring to Allen

I had issues in igniting vihtavuori n-105 with a Fiocchi small pistol primer in my 357Mag loads, had powder residues on the table and was 100m/sec slower than expected even after optimizing crimping with Lee Factory crimping die. Using a CCI Small Rifle primer fixed the issue. In my experience, there are powders which are very difficult to ignite, especially in long cases, the specific load may require different combination of components.

I have seen where some KZbin channels use a magnum primer on 9mm subsonic loads with a 147gr bullet yet they don’t explain why. As for powder I have read that the H110 leaves a lot of residue when used for these rounds and of course that’s the powder I have and was planning to use for my reloads. Would a magnum primer work better on this application to reduce the residue by burning it faster? I steer all of my friends to your channel because you are the best in teaching all of us new reloaders.
@GunBlue490

The very fact that these folks promote a magnum powder designed for supersonic levels of performance for a non-magnum cartridge intended for subsonic performance is a very fascinating lack of common sense and outright ignorance. I would steer wide from such advice in its entirety, and NEVER obtain loading information from anyone claiming to be an expert on these channels. One should never obtain loading data from any source other than a qualified loading manual. Anything else is strictly bogus, and very dangerous. As for this cartridge, ALL 147 grain 9mm loads are very much subsonic in ANY handgun. At the highest density loadings with a few powders, a couple of select powders intended for highest velocities may reach supersonic levels with a rifle length barrel. But, why then, would one select such a powder if he intends to have reduced velocity? The vast majority of regular listed and safe powders and loads provide fabulous accuracy and performance at standard subsonic levels simply because the heavy 147 grain bullet is a tough nut to drive at fast speeds. The 9mm Luger was designed around the 115 grain supersonic speedster. OF COURSE H-110 leaves a lot of residue in such loads, because it's not the correct powder for such a cartridge. It's not possible to burn it correctly in a 9mm Luger, and in fact, may not ignite at all, which is highly dangerous in repeaters. H-110 (296 Winchester) is a very specialized powder that was developed for the .30 M1 US Carbine, and is suited for use in high density loads for magnum handgun cartridges such as the .357, .41, 44, and others. There's no secret formula to making subsonic loads and no special powders needed to make them. Any one of the standard powders listed in each of the many manuals will shoot at any subsonic level you desire. The 9mm uses some of the quickest burning powders made. H-110 is a very slow burning powder and is absolutely NOT suited for the 9mm Luger, and is not listed as such in any loading manual, for any bullet weight. No powder listed for the 9mm Luger requires a magnum primer. A standard small pistol primer will ignite standard pistol powders completely and reliably.

"Pick up something from the loading counter": sure, you certainly can, but all the powder and bullet companies have this information online which makes it easier to search through the different loads for what you need: there's just so many options out there to sort through so this is the way I'd suggest going about it.

I understand the differences in primers as they pertain to bullet types , but what is difficult to understand is PRESSURES. It is hard to figure out how much pressure a round is producing by just looking in the reloading manual . It would be a great video to produce about pressures and how to distinguish the different pressures you are getting out of your reloads.

jason anders They all suffer at about the same degree. What must be considered is that 150 grain bullets are very short and stubby, and rely on velicity to punch through, whereas 140 grain 7mm bullets are long with sectional density that performs better at diminished velocities. The 308 requires a 165 grain bullet to acheive equal sectional density, which the 308 drives at about 100 fps less, but with far greater recoil. All in all, both are superior deer cartridges, and kill deer equally dead, and have bullets of equal sectional density available to them, but at quite different prices of recoil. Short barreled carbines are not typically used for larger game or longer ranges, so considerations of larger game capabilities with larger bore diameter are moot.

I do buy primers in in bulk based on pricing and availability, And I certainly agree on keeping them in the original container. And I also store with moisture absorbing packets. I have bought a kitchen product used for vacuum sealing food products and I seal all my primers in plastic with that and date each packages and Have never had a problem with any primer stored that way. Is something to consider. However don't ever use the machine in the kitchen Again. Beyond that I wish he would have mentioned crimp removal from primer pockets When reloading military cases.

I don't know about their primers as I have never used them. But I have used the factory ammunition and have never had an issue. I can state however that they are a very old and very well respected firm. Of course that is discounting the time they were taken over by the Nazis during World War 2

Thanks for the in-depth information on primers. A fellow handloader once told me that he loads with magnum primers instead of what the loading data calls for, when shooting in very cold temperature. I would appreciate your thoughts in using magnum primers over the published data component, when shooting in very cold temperature. Thanks.
@GunBlue490

Tyrone Kim Primers are engineered to function perfectly with the cartridges they are designed for, in any ambient temperatures in the world. Magnum primers means exactly what it says, and nothing more. Powder ignites with exactly the same spark, regardless of temperature, and it's completely independent of the pressure it may generate at different temperatures. As a matter of note, much of this bogus notion comes from Speer. I have found through the years that much of their loading data is bogus, and can even be wildly wrong. Their recommendations on magnum primers directly contradicts every primer manufacturer, which is clearly ridiculous. That would be like a tire company not knowing about their correct inflation pressures. Nobody in the industry has done more exacting and extensive work than Sierra in the field of ballistics, and I have never been thrown a curve by them. Similarly, Nosler and Hornady produces very well respected information. If you have any concerns whatsoever, refer to their data, none of which calls for magnum primers in anything but cases exceeding 60 to 65 grains, and there is never any caveat regarding ambient temperatures. A magnum primer effectively increases pressures by as much as a 2 percent gain in powder, but with no increase in velocity, which can even drop when unburned powder is ejected by undue primer force.

Thank You! Love your videos.. I'm just delving into to world of 300 blackout.. I decided on H110 for my power.. The load data I have calls for standard primers or military primers like CCI 41.. I love my .357 magnum and as I look at this cartridge it looks a lot like a necked down .357 magnum to me.. This got me thinking do I use a regular primer or should I try a magnum primer.. The information you provided about H110 made up my mind.. I'm going to use magnum primers.. What I have going so far is Starline brass, H110, CCI 450 and Speer 125 grain TNT.. I don't know how many grains of H110 yet.. I want to see how it fills the case.. Thank you again for the wonderful information your provide..

7yrs ago primers were what under 20 bucks a brick? I finally found Winchester WLRM but only 600. I had a couple very slight hangfires using standard WLR in my ultra mag. Everyone says Winchester standard are the hottest of the standards. I definitely need Magnums. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@GunBlue490 It is absolutely without a shadow of a doubt that I have zero place to argue with your knowledge Sir. I only attempted this due to the availability of magnum primers. Since I've read about hand loaders stating they are getting better accuracy with large rifle and Winchester being the hottest I'd give it a try. It was cold and was using MagPro which is spherical ball powder. This gave me ever so slight hangfires. H1000 extruded stick type did not. Either way thanks for your response and I did aquire magnum primers since then and will use them only. It's an honor to have a response from you Sir. And Thank You

@GunBlue490
@GunBlue490 4 жыл бұрын
"Quite a few failure to fire" is absolutely not the result of bad primers from ANY major company. I have used countless thousands of CCI, Winchester, and Remington primers without even a single unidentifiable mechanical issue, and even a few import brands. There are a host of reasons for misfires, ranging from excessive headspace, short or damaged firing pin, light strike, insufficient primer seating, over seating, excess grease on springs, or primer contamination. We used CCI primers exclusively for reloading our departmental training ammo for years, and every (rare) instance of a misfire was identified as a light strike. CCI primers are slightly harder, but no gun should be operating at such a marginal strike that it fails to crush it reliably with 100% consistency.

Obviously GB would be the expert in this arena. However as a long-term reloader I would add the other probable cause, especially if this issue was regarding one batch of the individual Primers. I would think the more likely issue would be mishandling in storage, Shipping or distribution, It's probably caused by dampness at some point in that evolution.

I have the latest Hornady book, 11th edition. It calls for a magnum primer in my 357 magnum, but a standard primer in my 44 magnum. Doesn't the 44 have more powder and a larger grain bullet? why the difference?

Magnum primers are of the same shape and form as standard primers, whether small or large. Their intensity is greater, and while accuracy may be compromised to a slight degree, you may certainly substitute magnum pistol primers, PROVIDED that you understand that they may elevate pressures beyond safe norms with loads that are safe in your gun when using standard primers. Simply adjust your loads downward by ten percent, and work up carefully from there. FYI, Remington and Winchester pistol primers are made for both standard and magnum applications, which works perfectly for me, without having to stock different kinds of primers.

Thanks for your contribution to youtubers! We're always fumbling standard vs magnum small pistol primers. It would be fantastic to have someone with your experience leave us another great video! I always do everything possible to adhere to cross referenced published manuals, but sometimes we are lucky to find any reloading components. I'm in the middle of nowhere and just about impossible sometimes to find the correct components. I've been reloading for 44 years, never had any incidents of any kind. The blogs are full of .2 cents, but few have your experience or willingness to leave a video of a real human being! Thanks for sharing your videos with us all sir! Happy new year!

I emailed cci to see what they would say about magnum primers in a 380 acp. Knowing to keep my 160 remaining or so standard 500 primers for it because in such a small case I would really have to experiment on the low ball park as pertaining to the powder charge! So I asked, here is the copy and paste reply, "You will only want to use a CCI 500 standard small pistol primer as use of a magnum would result in a pressure increase that could be as high as 20% and cause you issues that may be unsafe." So there we have it. Hopefully my local supplier will have some standard small pistol primers soon! Just thought I'd share this with you and your subs and readers. Thanks again gunblue490!

I am greatfull for all this info, Unfortunately I've been waiting for months to replenish my supplies for my loads, the retailer sick of me coming in and calling on the regular sold me the idea it was ok to load magnum primers for my 308/6.5creed. Because of covid and lack of supply I bought 1000 primers to get me through. I haven't noticed a big pressure difference h4350/varget both at and average 41gr/36gr in these particular loads. What am I missing here? Have I been miss informed? Thank you for your time and info. Best regards.

GunBlue490, Awesome vid. Thanks for the background on all kinds of different primers. May have missed it, but what are your thoughts on large magnum rifle primers vs large rifle primers for reloading 300WM in combination with IMR 4350 vs H1000, Im going to ladder test, but not sure if I have all kinds of time to do so on both IMR 4350 and H1000, was wondering if you knew off the top of your head if one powder/ primer performed better than the other, then I could just ladder test off of that? Thanks a lot.

My best performing load for my 300 Winchester Magnum has been with H-4831, giving the best velocity with outstanding accuracy. The cartridge has a case capacity of over 65 grains, which indicates magnum rifle primers. Brand is of no significance, as long as you stick to one when you find the load. My tests with H-1000 have showed very heavy recoil and muzzle blast for comparative velocities and just mediocre accuracy, so I have no further interest in it. H-4350 and IMR-4350 have always been superb powders in many cartridges, but in my experience, not as good as H-4831 when used with heavier bullets and magnum rounds. It's my go-to powder for the 270 Winchester or 300 Winchester Magnum, and even shines in my 257 Roberts, if you watch my 257 Roberts bench rest video with 100 grain Sierra Match King bullets.
