I feel bad for you Rob, getting paired up with that other Banshee player spamming "Advance" like that. A friend and I absolutely hate players like that, which while it's been a while since I ran into one last, in my experience at least, they're always Japanese players trying to get us Westerners to try and keep up with them and it's never ended well for us to be honest.

While it wasn't attempted, I got to see someone else pull off the counterattack with the other melee weapon. The attack is blocked, followed by an instant side swing.

I believe it's more of a 360° sweep that hits low to the ground, so that you essentially can counter them from all angles and make even use of it if they have any of their teammates around you. Though apparently there was a bug until recently, and you could trigger the counter attack by crouching or uncrouching. I feel bad for anyone that was baffled by people exploiting that, as the damage is at, or possibly above, heavy attack levels in one hit. Though you can counter the counter attack with a tackle, so long as you aren't the person who triggered it (literally happened to me the first time I went to test it in Free Play).

I'm glad i wasn't the only one on the receiving end of bs tackles that clearly shouldn't connect i swear that is one of my biggest complaints about the game.

I regularly will do a swing, then start boosting away only to rubber-band back into a counter. Its infuriating

This mobile suit is cursed for me. I've used it already 40 times and I've lost every single match with it. Everytime I pick it the game sorties me with the worst players known to mankind. I do alright in it but with the teams I keep getting I can only carry them so far. Which is absolutely upsetting because I know its a great mobile suit. I just wish this game has skill based matchmaking or at least an option to turn it on or some form of matchmaking that uses a players stats instead of the rating number.
