25 years huh. I only got around to fully watching it in 09 after seeing bits and pieces of it when it initially aired here in Aus on morning cartoons. Back then there was something about it that just stuck with me and I am honestly glad I finally checked it out. Rewatched it in 2014 and it feels like I'm probably going to watch it again pretty soon. Wing is honestly 1 of those series that for anyone with an interest in geo politics, points in philosophy or just history in general (European with a focus on England for me) then it is a series that will resonate quite strongly for them.

Quatre actually did master the Zero system. Heero Yuy had it installed in Sandrock which enabled Quatre to pull the other gundam pilots together as a team toward the end of the series. Quatre then had the system removed after he felt he understood the purpose of it and that he was capable of being a true leader. God...I'm a nerd.

I'd argue all the Gundam pilots did except for Duo. As you said Quatre did in Sandrock. Wufei seemly had no trouble with it at all. He didn't ever start breathing hard while using it Trowa seemly mastered it right after he got his memories back. So they all did except Duo.

I really enjoyd Wing after rewatching it, because I never fully understood it as a kid. The series is truly more than just showing off flashy robots and pretty boy protagonists, it embarks on a critical examination on war itself. The mobile dolls and AI systems remind me of today's drone warfare in our own world, and even just the approach to full automation in other industries. I think the main message of Wing is that even the pinnacle of artificial intelligence will never comprehend the motives of human beings, hence will unable to reach a satisfying conclusion or consensus, which in this case was the achievement of world peace. The ZERO system demonstrates this, it is the peak of logical decision making, but without the focused decisiveness of the pilot, it's nothing more than an environmental hazard. Heero and Zechs eventually come to realize what they are fighting for, and how they will do it, which is what tames the system (Zero and Epyon). Their methods were different in aiming for the same thing, but their battle is an honest statement, that even the greatest powers themselves achieve nothing without the human heart.

I watched it as a kid on Toonami as well. I've thought of rewatching it at times. I may appreciate it even more now that I'm alot older as you have. In recent times the Universal Century has caught my fancy. But Wing, as some one that grew up in the states will always be my first Gundam exposure.

There is a ridiculous amount of dialogue through wing, but if you have any sort of interest in geo politics or points of history of which war has shaped much of, then a rewatch is well worth it as I dare say for those fields wing will resonate very strongly.

Now that I'm older I want to rewatch wing, or full metal panic, as its supposed to be another great mech warfare anime from the 90s. I fell in love with armored core growing up and still play it also( AC 4 Answer )... also, Zoids is another old gem I want to rewatch these days.

It was my first gundam series too, but while Wing has it moments, and creates an interesting background atmosphere, it definitely is not one of the best of the bunch. And compared to movies like the original MS trilogy, CCA, F91 or even the Zeta: NT movies, it really doesn't reach me. Ok, visuals are nice, and the additional background to the After Colony Universe is a bonus for somebody who watched Wing before . But as a movie by itself, it is really forgettable (like the 00 movie).

jason hall I'm not sure if you didn't know already, but that is basically what happened. It was initially planned as full length series, but, until it was scrapped and the work on the characters, backstory and plot rehashed into a single movie. But you cannot argue that, what we have got (especially when watching in HD) shows signs of what could have been an awesome series.

jason hall Same here, my friend. I missed all the Gundam series before Gundam Wing, because I was born literally just in time to be a 90's kid. So Gundam Wing was the first Gundam series I ever saw. But I INSTANTLY fell in love with the franchise. However, I don't think my introduction to Gundam Wing. I think I actually saw the MODEL KITS before I watched the anime. Also, on a slightly separate note, Gundam Wing may have been my first introduction to the Gundam franchise, but it wasn't my first introduction to anime in general. That honor belongs to the Miyazaki classic, My Neighbor Totoro.

Christopher0184 That would be a really cool idea. Zero could tell you the all possible outcomes from driving super fast. Every move you make, every overtake, every fast corner could be completed legally. If an officer pulls you over, just tell him you have Zero and he'll let you go. You would be able to see every head on collision, every pedestrian run down, every one of your own deaths. But amoung it all you would see a journey that would take you to your destination safe and alive. All you would have to do is chose that particular journey out of all the examples that Zero shows you. The only problem is you'll probably go insane from the visions of you killing many people. Each time you got into your car, you'd have the most awful scenes imaginable flash before you before you could set off. But at least you would make up the time by travelling at 155mph the whole journey.

Why do people hate Wing so much? Because its Dark (Zeta), Because of the Char/Amuro clones (every other gundam show), Because of the boy band idea (but you love 00). I know I'm biased because this was my gateway (90s kid in America) but really its still in my top 3 of gundam series!

For me, I didn't hate wings.but for me it's just mediocre because of these following reasons. 1.Characters Most of the them feels one dimensional and boring (For example Duo,Wufei etc.) only things they do is looking cool and nothing else they not create any tension drama. These may works if they're in a standard shonen anime, but if they are in a realistic setting show like gundam, it didn't work. 2.The story Eventhough the story is quite good, but the pacing kills it. They are slow and didn't show us much of the importan things. For example "the relationship between Trowa and Catherine" for me this is feel really wasted because it will show how trowa changed form a soldier that willing to sacrifices his own life for mission into a person that cares about himself and others. 3.Relena For me she is the worst character in the series. She should be the character that show us that "peace can't be archeived by force" but no, eventhough she disarm herself and her country to show her idea, but she's still need to rely on Heero,gundams and war that treize created to actually obtained the "peace", that's makes her into just a idealism child that fails to saw the truth infront of her. Insted of being a fine ruler and the creator of peace like the show was trying to potrayed.

nailed it! The concept could have done what 00 did in its first season. Have characters with, all by themselves, have interesting reasons to pilot a kick-ass gundam, for different reasons and from different backgrounds. What we got is (pretty good templates) for an interesting backstory and then have to fill (or even worse, fanfiction) an interesting character arc from them ourselves.

This is the kind of content I sought during the original run. Alas, the internet was young and so was I. I'm a bit iffy about the peace bit. While I don't dispute Zero being able to learn like an AI or gain sentience, it's main purpose seems to focus on the short term goal in order to achieve the current mission of it's user. During Endless Waltz, it's established that Heero, the stoic/battle hardened child soldier, is the perfect candidate to use zero. When fighting against the PSTD afflicted Wufei, Heero confirms his own trauma. When he ponders to Wufei "How many more times must I kill that girl and her dog? ZERO will not tell me anything. Tell me Wufei!" This appears to be Zero choosing an unorthodox path to obtain peace but methinks its to remind us of Heero's humanity and displays a limitation of the system.

Armored core has a similar system installed in some of the nexts. After playing AC4 and AC4 Answer, it was stated some of the pilots went insane or were killed by the harsh cpu system.

It's called the plus system. It wasnt really installed in the machine so much as the pilot himself was augmented. The biggest problems with 4 and 4 answer is that you had no access to it like in earlier games but the computer did

@@tonytony8872 That's only in the Pre-4 games. 4 and 4As NEXT ACs used the AMS, which as described by 4 and 4As lore, was more like Human Plus without the surgery, but the cockpit literally plugging into the pilot. AMS gave the unmodified pilot Human Plus like performance in their NEXTs but at the cost of depleting lifespan. Those who couldn't handle the AMS would go nuts.

I feel like with Zechs it was the Zero System that “mastered” him. His indecision made him vulnerable to the hella logical, ethically bankrupt notion of dropping a colony onto earth. Though this would end the war and provide the colonies w/ momentary peace, its really not something Zechs as a person would do. Thinking about it this way, it makes his weird character change in the latter half of the series completely understandable Also, Heero basically needed a robot foil to show him how human he is, similar to Sosuke in Full Metal Panic

There's something to be said for this theory. I'm not sure it's something like mind control, more like a really good argument that convinced Zechs. But the critical weakness of the Zero system is that it _is_ purely a tactical system. It is possible to win every battle you are personally involved in and still lose a war or fail your strategic objectives. The Zero system is, in a sense, short sighted. That's why it would propose the colony drop, because that would fulfill the objective and the ZERO system lacks the sentience/wisdom/longview to realize this isn't the most optimal solution to war in the _long_ term.

Wing is probably my Favorite Series as it was the first I ever saw... And while its FAR from the best. It has its memorable moments. But honestly even watching it today. I still feel the series needed another 20 to 30 episodes spread out to really flush out the full meaning for people to understand. While I and many get the true point the story was poorly paced and at times felt like they ran out of budget and time to finish it. For it would be 3 episodes of nothing then suddenly 1 episode of action then 2 more episodes of nothing with small cuts here and there that weren't needed. I really wish they would do a full Remake of Wing and flush out the story fully and give more characters more screen time as well as some hints to their past for the unknowing Audience. While also improving on the animation and battle sequences to more so show the pilots natural talents and some of the grittier sides of battle like when Heero was forced to use a Leo as a Guerilla soldier for a while. The show has "Potential" to be up there with some of the best series. And has the solid foundations for it. Especially with Trieze pretty much being the REAL star of the entire series. Having pretty much planned everything out from early in the series to his own demise. If they capitalize on the positive the show had and fix the Negatives it could be a top 5 series. Also.. while the Wing Zero is one of my favorites.... The Wing Gundam will always be Number 1 to me.... That suit has been the most abused, beaten and battered Suit in all of Gundam I'd say. xDD And STILL wouldn't fully die in the end. lol

It would suffice with 10 more episodes. The problem with Gundam is that they stick to the 45-50 episode range and wind up dragging out the beginning and middle only to rush the ending.

Love that you laid down the truth kn the zero system. It calculates every possible path and feeds it real time to the user, meaning it looks like foresight but is just massive prediction based on calculation like what chess masters do. It's a terrifying and amazing system and it helped to break off from the newtype trop of oh I am just better than a human or I can see things before they happen through bs powers rather than the machine offering a way to win.

I also felt the system seems to removal all doubt and that's part of why it can cause temporary insanity. Doubt is not the same as indecision, doubt as I am using it, is the capacity to perceive one's ego and their own flaws/limitations. Essentially doubt no matter how small, helps ground us in the real world and makes truly understand the consequences of our decisions. But when the system removes doubt completely, we start to lose our grip on reality and can go temporarily insane. Hero and Milardo mastered the system by realizing it's a trick and it demonstrates the limits of system itself. They consciously were doubting themselves so to speak and never allowing the system to trick them into any false beliefs. So it functioned as the video said above, just showing possibilities no more.

The zero system is an impressive master computer with the state of the art manipulative brainwave pattern algorithm that simulates the pilots or enemies moves and actions in a sense telling the pilot the future. 5 have mastered the system, 4 dont use it because of various reasons, 1 still uses it till the end. the characters and reasoning are as follows: Heero Yuy- Uses the system to the very end as he is very accustomed to the system. Zechs- Mastered the system but doesnt feel he needs it any more as he views his needs for it dead along with his former identity of milardo peacecraft. Trieze- The system provided him no added advantage as he had mastered control over his emotions a long time ago. so the system showed him nothing. Quatre- Mastered the system but it was a copy of the system ( that i didnt find out till one of the gundam breaker games.) The copy of the system he used in sandrock was a derivitive program that was easier to handle. it was modified by heero yuy. after using it Quatre didnt feel he needed it anymore. Wufei- Mastered the system on his first try only suffering 1 hallucination. that is because of his training and the fighting sight system inside of altron being so similar. (which you do mention) Love this video btw.

Watching Gundam Wing in middle school sparked my lifelong obsession with simulation software. I now work on agent based modeling (ABM) platforms for scenario simulation based on the user’s goals. The use cases range from market strategy to military wargaming. ABM requires stochastic simulation, so you run what-if scenarios thousands of times to get a probabilistic distribution of outcomes. I wish a popular streaming platform would license Gundam Wing cuz I wanna watch it again as an adult without having to subscribe to Crunchyroll

zero system also calculates the enemy mobile suit inside out critically and prefectly even the enemy pilot itself and their faces when they die, calculating every enemy arsenal and system it equip, predict possible magical move before it even happen, and every prediction can be a true future based on the pilots itself so basically it predicts multiple future outcomes

ZERO system is simply a program that allows you to give the best move base on your mind. However, limited unless adding new info to the battle database and ti will expand more ideas or suggestions to the pilot to choose the course of action. That's how the ZERO system works.

I would say the zero system does have a limited prediction ability. In the short term to an outside observer it might seem like the pilot has the the ability to see into the future, and it is, when it's basing actions and reactions based on probabilities, where it would find it difficult to predict with any real accuracy is with a large number of people (portabations), and all their individual actions, although I don't think it has been said what it's limit is in regards to that. It's the same as when we predict the orbits of the planets and other bodies of the solar system, we get less accurate the further in time we predict, those predictions are probabilities, but every portabation is nearly impossible to predict, hence why the further in time you predict, the less accurate the prediction. And the zero system would be under the same limitations. It would be able to predict with scary accuracy for the near future, but once you got to the long term, every small portabation would make the initial prediction less accurate, it would have a hard time predicting with any sense of accuracy every single decision and choice many individuals would make. Really it's all an algorithm, and to make my point, there was a story about how Target's algorithm predicted a teens pregnancy weeks before anyone knew, just off the similar buying habits she started to have that pregnant women have, and the algorithm thought she was pregnant, and began to send advertisements for pregnant women to her home, which enraged her father. To make my point further, Albert Einstein before publishing his work on General Relativity, first used his (the hypothesis) Theory to predict the next solar eclipse, and then waited until his predict was either true of false, and wellhe was accurate. If that's not seeing into the future then I don't know what is. You and I (and anything with a brain) has this ability in a very minor and limited function at least. There is no present, you are always living in the past. Think of every time you duck or dodged something or caught something, your brain didn't react instantly, no not at all, your senses send signals to your brain at the speed of sound, so there is always a lag, and incomplete information reaching your brain, but your brain makes calculations based off of that incomplete information, and gives you probabilities and predictions and you made a choice on the most likely outcome, so you are seeing into the future. So yes in a limited function the zero system could and does see and make accurate predictions into the future, that's what probabilities are.

Hero and zechs definitely mastered for the sole fact the piloted bother wing zero and epyon. Dorthy and quatre mastered it for tactical advisory at best. Also a good note the zero system helped healed trowa amnesia. So it does have positive qualities but it depends on the skill of the pilot !!!!!

interesting, but I had the impression when Zero says you have no future, it means you have been eliminated in battle or conflict; Trieze tells Hiro he hopes he returns a loser, meaning he gets to keep on fighting, but also means the battle will never end; Treize wants a world with no conflict, so this is Trieze way of hoping Hiro can continue living - I think. The System itself, is also like a God, the system is also dangerous, as it is psychic based technology; and can turn the pilot into a maniac based on the conclusion of a logically founded belief they have come to have due to using Zero. Zero is also symbolised with God-hood in the credits and sysmbols of Gundam, similar to Masons symbols of God. Additionally, Zero, in start trek is consider as a Q, that has been locked away due to malevolence....The idea of Handling Zero, as superior to the human race, is a hint at the 'Newtype' race humans in space become in later additions of Gundam, and again mastering God like abilities... It funny when programming chess games, trees are used to predict every move that can be made, meaning the computer can accurately predict any outcome before it happens and lead the human player down a specific path (time line), meaning you can only beat the computer because it is programmed to let you win, and or knowing what moves to make from the beginning if your the human player and how can remember every move to do that without their notes...lol...
