Before Val Kilmer's performance in the movie Tombstone in 1993, The performance in Gunfight at the O.K. Corral by the late great Kirk Douglas of Doc Holiday was the best ever. And STILL a "close second" to Kilmer IMO. This is an all time CLASSIC western movie.
@ainsleylucky351110 ай бұрын
Notice how Douglas had the knife in his fingers on the bar yet when he spun to face Lee Van Cleef, he "pulled" the knife from the back of his neck collar? Have another look at the sequence in an otherwise great Western . The music and the song are the real stars . Kudos to Dimitri Tiomkin for the music and song, sung by Frankie Layne and Ned Washington for those excellent lyrics and director John Sturges for weaving it into a nice package . Aclassic western which, should have won some Oscars for best picture, actor Douglas,actress Jo Van Fleet.

+brian centi I found Doc Holliday to be played to fine form by almost every actor that stepped foot into the role. Kirk definitely enjoyed himself here, and I love it. Val Kilmer did amazing with his role. And of course, both Quaid brothers tackled the role (Dennis played a more severe, natural Holliday and Randy did okay). It's like Batman to me. Many actors did the role, but every one did bring the best they could to it...and I enjoyed it all the same.

The character played by John Ireland must have been glad about something because @1:41, he produced a sly grin at someone or something to his left which is not in keeping to all the others in screenshot. Maybe the director failed to see it, but in that scenario, the scene would be re-shot. Maybe a nervous grin is what it was. However, the film itself, the script and the outstanding actors, produced one of the most legendary films of all time from that era. It's a great shame that those performers of the past are no longer with us as the quality of today's lot is clearly lacking. Any modern day remake wouldn't be worth bothering with. R.I.P Kirk Douglas as you were box office and a credit to your profession!!

@tomjustis72375 жыл бұрын
Look again. Doc pulled the switchblade from under his collar at the back of his neck. The real question is ... did switchblades even exist in the 1880's?
@joep87875 жыл бұрын
@@tomjustis7237 Switchblades were made for many years even before the Civil War. Sometime during or after the Civil War, they began mass producing switchblades which lowered costs. If you consider spring assist knives as switchblades, then they're still being made and legal to carry. I bought a spring assist knife in Massachusetts. As long as the blade is less than 3.5 inches, it's legal to carry. The unbelievable thing is, can they be thrown? I don't think the balance of a switch blade makes it a good knife for throwing.
@tomjustis72375 жыл бұрын
@@joep8787 Thanks for the history lesson. I'm in Ohio and I also have a spring assist knife which is legal. I also question how well a switchblade could be thrown regardless of how Hollywood plays it. Did you ever see James Coburn go switchblade against gun in a fast draw duel in 'The Magnificent Seven'? Great theater but totally unbelievable. Take care, my friend.
@steadmanuhlich67343 жыл бұрын
@@tomjustis7237 FYI: if you pause the film clip at 1:27 one can see the knife picked up from the edge of the bar. The move to the back of the neck was so fast it gives the illusion that he picked it from his collar, but if you watch it frame by frame one can see that is NOT the case. The knife was never behind his collar. And, in movie making, he never threw the knife (into the padded chest of Van Cleef). A simple film editing cut was used and the illusion was complete.

Kirk was a far better actor than Burt, but it was Burt who won the Oscar. One of the actors here is George Matthews, who co-starred in at least one Alfred Hitchcock Presents episode (with Jessica Tandy) but who may be most famous to many viewers as "Harvey" on the Honeymooners episode called "The Bensonhurst Bomber," when he challenges Ralph Kramden to a fight (or rather Norton forces the fight!). "So you think Harvey is a funny name?" "Harvey is a lovely name." "You know what I might do: I might punch you right in the mouth." Incidentally, I always thought that "mouth" was a wrong choice of words, since too serious (more appropriate for a drama than a comedy); "nose" would have been more suited to a comedy.
@georgefoster12418 жыл бұрын
+Haggis You're full of shit. That midget Jew didn't hold a candle to the likes of Lancaster or the Duke. He played 2nd fiddle to all the great stars. The only thing that saved his career was being a Jew in a town of Jews.
@georgefoster12418 жыл бұрын
***** Douglas was a lousy midget actor. Even during the movie camera angles had to be used to make him seem taller. When coming down stairs he was always behind to look as tall as the other actors. He was a phony Jew. Alan Ladd never did that phony shit.
@malafakka85306 жыл бұрын
George Foster and you seem to be a lousy human being. Throwing just insults around won't make what you say right. By the way, Douglas intentionally sought out those roles. In his own words he made his career by playing sons of bitches. And as much as I like the Duke, he was very limited in the roles he played, but those things aren't important as long as he delivered what was needed for a movie, and that he mostly did.
@malafakka85306 жыл бұрын
Haggis oscars aren't important in the long run. Barely 50% of the movies and people that get an oscar stand the test of time. It might be a nice recognition while one is alive, but they rarely hit the mark on what will live on. And maybe you are right about Douglas being the better actor, but I wouldn't know that. Maybe he was, but if you look at Lancaster's complete career, you will see that for a famous actor he took many chances and always tried to improve and I think he succeeded in that regard. Regardless, of who was better or not, for me, those actors of the past were just FASCINATING to watch on the screen. I watch even their bad movies sometimes. I can't say the same of today's actors, and I don't mean by this that they are inferior, I just find it harder to watch their bad movies, but I'm probably just biased in this matter 😁.

It is almost impossible to kill somebody by throwing a knife, no matter how strong or good you are it is just not enough force in order to penetrate the body. Research it, it is against the laws of dynamics. But this is one of my most favorite movies and cannot be surpassed by any sissy remakes. Maybe the next remake should have Justin Beiber play as Doc Hollliday!! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
