I've been looking for a build with this kind of playstyle, it reminds me a lot of how I used to play Gunlance in MH4U, stick close and jab/smash without any shelling. Great build, will try this out later.

I'd suggest switch mind's eyes to protective polish since white sharpness also prevent bouncing off and pair with speed sharpening mean we never lose that juicy white attack increase.

Lolz your set is like the legitimate opposite of my Brutal Force Gunlance build it dumped almost all def jewels and def armor skills for quick burst of power only used 1 handicraft and protective polish to preserve the small slither of white sharpness a few rathalos parts activate elemental crit and then 3 Vaal g parts hands for 3 free drag element and active super recovery and Rocksteady mantle and i sometimes switch temporal mantle with critical booster tool for 100% active affinity base without tool affinity is 75%. I like your set too I may try it after I make some tweaks to your set. 😎

Why didn’t you combo in burst fire after the downward slash? My usual combo is horizontal-vertical-burst fire-horizontal-fast reload-vertical-burst-(repeat). I am curious what’s the advantage of avoiding burst fire?

Thanks for the video! Can someone share what the actual attack combos are here for a Gunlance noob? Guard thrust I believe is R2 +Y (or RT + triangle on PS4), what is the "burst fire combo without burst"?

Grant Drake Burst fire combo w/o burst means don't press O(PS) to do the burst shelling attack.

The combo, when standing still, is (Xbox, in this case): Y+B, Y, B (this is the slam burst explosion you were asking), Y~RT+B, Y, B, Y~RT+B. The ones with "~" can be done indefinitely once you get the first combo down. When moving, instead of Y+B, you start with forward+Y, and then Y+B, then B (slam burst) and the combo is the same from when you stand still. As stated, if you donr want the slam burst, simply press Y instead of pressing B. Hope that helps.

Threat Level 2 or Tempered Elders. The main difference between the two threat levels is the chance to drop weapon augment jewels is higher against the tempered elders.

Yes the rathian gunlance or zorah you'll basically have to settle for shelling til kolve, tempered pickle, or lunastra are ready to be hunted because there is no real baseball bat gunlance builds decent enough for min/maxing til then.

Glutton Gunlance III + Elementless (you lose the Dragon Element, the white sharpness but gain raw damage and no negative affinity) or Hazak Spysa II (Less attack but more Dragon Element, same sharpness and no negative affinity)

Could make it stronger easily but because you've put in QoL perks its hindered that. I still feel like i get more health back with recovery 2 and 2 health regen augments on my gunlance set (though mine is shelling). Running Earplugs 5, Guard 5, Stun Resistance 3, Artillery 3, Recovery 2, capacity Boost and protective polish with the guts armour ability

keksdieb101 Royal is still best for full burst playstyle, but best GL for dps is the rarity 8 wide 4 GL from Kulve Taroth. Poke > shell x3, quick reload, repeat. Has the best wyvern fire too.

recovery 2 doesn't do poop, you need medicine 2. recovery only affects the red/yellow health speed recovery, where as medicine actually increases the amount of health gained back from health regen mod. Also, health regen mod has diminishing returns, first is 10% hp back, second and third are 5%. So if you wanted to actually be maximally efficient, you'd go 1 hp regen aug and then get a slot for medicine jewel. Guard 3 + guard up let's me tank Teostra's nuclear explosion, which is good enough for me, anymore than Guard 3 seems un-needed. I love earplugs, particularly with GL/long shell since you can just charge shot through it without caring at all, but if I wasn't crap at this game, I'd get better at guarding roars/ evading them, but I've never been too good with that unless I have evasion window up or evasion mantle on.

The point of the video is that shelling in burst fire is too long of an animation lock and the Jho gunlance is long shell type (bad at burst). It does have crazy high raw damage so the Jho GL is best used as a beat stick to club things to death with no shelling.

I don't see any point at all to use a gunlance, but not use any shelling. You are taking away half of what makes it a weapon. If you want to use a gunlance, but dont want to shell, just use a normal lance. That is at least built for that kind of playstyle, and so it will simply perform better.

Judging by the numbers this might have more raw deeps. Definitely loses sharpness slower. Lance is probably higher damage solo without a palico. That said I agree with you that shelling puts the fun in funlance. And the parry is what makes Lance fun for me.

Gunlance is great if you have no: skill, thumbs, time to learn how to play the game properly. Definitely recommend this build to 70% of the player base.

Well then I've been using the Gunlance since its introduction in MH2. And Boi... I can do things to monsters you had no idea was possible. I've also come to the conclusion that these games are way to easy for me the only way I can get a slight challenge is if I 1v2 monsters.. While on fire... And poisoned.

I could give me 7 yo godson a gunlance and tell him to poke-shoot-poke-shoot-poke-shoot- then reload. Show him R2 is Block and he could beat anything in this game as well so get off your high horse. All the weapons in this game are great and have diverse play styles and are super fun. Except gunlance and HBG they’re there for people with less skill.

crimdawgx Kek That's how you play the gunlance in MHFU/MH2. Its changed since then. So easy? When its got three different shell types that all require different play styles. Like saying great sword is easy all you gotta do is press triangle and circle. Well that's true that's not the best way to play the weapon. I've beaten all games that made it to the U.S solo. Gotten to G Rank solo. Beaten Dalamadur and Ukanlos solo. All using the gunlance. I don't know what high horse you're on but I don't look down at any of the weapons or any play styles and I'm probably way better than you at this game. So think what you will. I have nothing against you or your playstyle even if you have artillery on you long sword build. Or if you use non elemental boost on you elemental weapon. Im just here to say I'm really good at this game and use the gunlance.
