If John did it, it's because he deemed it the optimal response to almost being paralyzed by a back arching neck crank. Believe me when I say John knew precisely what bone he would break in the guys arm and exactly how long it would sideline him the moment he felt him drop all his deadweight to the floor while holding his neck. John was sitting with his spine arched and his legs in front of him preventing forward movement; driving his head forward and downward from that position is incredibly dangerous. It is absolutely reckless to suddenly switch up the tempo of a slow roll with the injured coach, and abruptly do a hard as soon as you secure the headlock. Could have paralyzed him or ended his coaching career. John understands BJJ better than anyone, he knows how to assess and factor in things like ego, experience, intent, etc. when rolling with someone and assessing a situation like this. All I can say is no one is more measured and intentional with everything they do in the sport of BJJ. It is very likely that John had observed several issues with this student, and that he deemed the neck/spinal cord tweak to be sinister and problematic enough to warrant a fast-healing bone break. What happened here was no doubt a punishment and suspension of training privileges, in the only environment on earth where intentionally snapping a dude's arm as a form of retaliation is not only allowed, but arguably the ultimate endgame of the sport. Brutal no doubt, but certainly a calculated response to what John must have sensed to be a man with no regard for anyone's safety who poses a clear risk to both his students safety and detriment to the atmosphere of his gym.

It wasn't because he sprawled on him. The story goes that this was a catch wrestler that came in and rolled like he was trying to win gold at the Brazilian Open By no means was our beloved professor upset about doing more than flow roll, but rather displeased by the wrestlers attempt to prove a point with his aggressive attempts at neck cranking. JD, being a technical grappler, one to find position first then submission, gave the aggressive visitor a well earned lesson: do not come into a gym with intent of proving yourself/style and disregarding the courtesy of an invitation by trying to rip the professor's head off his shoulders.
