Gunnera manicata & tinctoria How to tell the difference?

Gunnera manicata and Gunnera tinctoria are beautiful plants. Both have very big leaves which are very exotic looking! They look alike, especially if they are small plants. In garden centers 90% of the manicatas are tinctorias, so there is some confusion...
How to tell the difference? There are some details in the leaves and the petioles (stems) that are different and the manicata is in everything larger. But when they flower the differences are very clear and absolutely determining!

Thanks for the happy trip down memory lane! Much appreciated. Years ago I grew Gunnera manicota way east of Seattle, Wa. It grew beautifully under deciduous trees where it got dappled sunlight all day. Several times during the season it got a mulch of fresh horse manure, courtesy of my neighbor’s horse. In fall, spent leaves were inverted over resting crowns weighted down with cut petioles. Leaves removed in spring after last frost. Typical winter night temp was 21F. Had no trouble growing it year after year whatsoever.
