Carrying guns in Ecuador, is it time?
This is a short report on the status of personal gun ownership in Ecuador.
The former president, President Lasso issued a decree in October of 2023 that would allow the rights for civilians to own their own personal weapons.
Where do we stand today with a new president in office?

I guarantee you if you have to actually use your gun in a foreign country of which you are not a citizen then the probability of getting railroaded and jailed is pretty good.

When I worked in Peru during the early 1990s, the time of Terrorism; I got a gun permit and carried. It was a very dangerous country. I am ex military with combat experience. But if I felt the need in a foreign country during retirement; I would move to a different country. If you ever used it, you do not want to be tried in the legal system! Judicial systems are corrupt, and I doubt you can get a fair trial. Being an expat payments are probably going to be expected!

Thank You for the info Don. I have always found that in the U.S.A. and here a squirt gun filled with my special blend of home made hot sauce is very effective, non lethal, and legal.

I might want a gun if I lived in a rural area where help was far away in case of problems. Otherwise, I would just not go where the bad guys are, which seems pretty easy. Ecuadorians might have great reasons to have a gun. As a retiree, I don’t need one.

Don, thank you for this timely update on Ecuador's policies and regulations regarding the private ownership of firearms. Assuming one meets the requirements, to have a gun in one's home is one thing, while to carry it on the streets is another. I assume the latter remains prohibited (for private citizens in Ecuador), but correct me if I'm wrong on that.

There needs to be a castle doctrine at least for residents for the ability to protect their property and home. The citizens shouldnt have to worry about going to jail after dispatching a subject during a home invasion.

Thanks' Mr. Don for explaining this application process. Even after listing to you explain some of the process I am not sure a person can acquire the license. If of 500 people "applied none have passed the ministry of health". The odds are very bad. Seems, like they had second thoughts about the new law.

I did the carry thing in Michigan. It was a pain, literally. I hated carrying the thing. Many people retired to the Philippines. They seem happy. I watch on KZbin. I myself vacation to Cabarete Dominican Republic. The housing costs are rather inexpensive. The other costs are similar to Michigan.

Guns are allowed - through regulation - for the military in defense of the state, and not for personal use for the defense of one's own private home. Here's the wording: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Notice that it says the right of THE people - not the right of people. There is a difference. The American people - AS A PEOPLE - have the right of defense. Alas, most Americans completely disregard the first thirteen words of this amendment, as if they have no meaning whatsoever. I will give you one point though - the United States is the greatest country - for having the highest cost of health care, and the highest incarceration rate, and the highest number of mass shootings.

@@MeMe-DGAF, at the time this amendment was drafted, what do you suppose a militia was? At that point in history, the United States didn't have a military as it is organized today. Instead, when this country was founded, it could be defended only by groups of citizens called a militia. And this qualified as the military of the time. You are Exhibit A of the people who ignore the first thirteen words of the amendment. Very convenient. But the amendment does not say that private citizens may own guns for the defense of their homes. It says that a well regulated militia may act for the security of the STATE. I will leave the last word to you because quite frankly I'm not interested in discussing this with you further.

The governments in latam will not let you carry a gun in the long term. Maybe in Argentina soon

As I understand, as a man, you are not allowed to carry ANY type of weapon without a permit in Ecuador. However, I have heard that women are permitted to carry pepper spray/mace as a defensive weapon.

You do not need approval that I am aware of to have a stun gun or pepper gel/spray as my friends in Ecuador have them. Maybe for a taser that shoots 15 to 30 feet is illegal or needs a permit but a stun gun(which are basically useless unless you catch them off guard because you must be next to the criminal) is legal. People get these two confused.

Tough subject, Don. With every nutcase and his brother owning multiple weapons here (US), we certainly aren’t safer. I own a gun and know how to use it, but don’t carry it. Just not comfortable with it. Also, with the ridiculous behavior of our “Florida men and women “ often on display, I’ve removed any temptation to use it. I would like to own a taser gun like the police carry. But I don’t feel the NEED to own one. Like many of the other folks have noted, if I NEED to carry, I’m in the wrong place. Another good video!
