It wasn't a bad album but let's face it it was the Axl Rose solo album. I mean I like a lot of songs on it but honestly I can't even hardly stand to listen to it anymore because I burnt myself out on it because I hadn't heard new material in so long. If for some reason miraculously they do release new material with Slash and Duff I hope to God it goes back to a hard rock sound and not that industrial that sound that Chinese had

I wish Axl had called it the The Axl Rose Project or something but I just wish it had been a solo album from him! I think if it had of been, it would have been better well received I believe. Damn I have been a huge #1 GN'R Fan since October 1987 so I'm very excited to see Axl, Slash n' Duff back together n what they will come up with and record in the near future !! As far as Chinese Democracy goes...I drove over 140 miles to get it the night it came out at Best Buy and I loved it then track for track in 2008, and I still love it track for track in 2018 ♥🔫'sN'Fn'🌹's!💀

I gotta get this off my chest, after over a decade: All the writers were saying "this couldn't live up to expectations!" over and over again. WHAT were did they think fans were expecting? Something completely out of this world that would reinvent music altogether? Appetite all over again with a completely different band but somehow not stale? A trainwreck? Then music started leaking, and people were still saying "this can't live up to expectations". They knew what to expect but they still kept saying it. HOW? In the intervening decade it finally dawned on me: Professional rock writers are mostly complete idiots. That's all. There's nothing more to it. God grant me the serenity to accept what I cannot change.

I don't really care much of what people think of me when I say it, but I actually think this is one of the best albums I have heard in my entire life. It goes in the same category as appetite. This is because it has so many great tracks. I like every song on this album quite a lot, with several songs getting similar levels of love as the greatest GNR tracks, such as: Catcher in the Rye (I read the book because of it), Riad N' The Bedouins, IRS and Prostitute. The last one is the greatest closing in the music's history and possibly The best song I have ever heard in my entire life. The entire album somehow resonates with me deeply. I regret very much initially receiving the album unenthusiastically. Once again Axl knew better...

For me it’s the second best GNR album. I would’ve rather Axl reformed the line up with buckethead and finck than the original members as I just can’t see them being to rekindle the magic in the studio again. I would’ve loved to hear the follow up to Chinese democracy, apparently Axl recorded enough material for 3 albums.

@zyriuz2 Жыл бұрын
This album has grown on me, I mean it's just as good as the illusions and the appetite, it just has a very different chill vibe compared to those it compliments the rest of the albums really well because it has more complex sound and is a very nice breathing period of solitude when viewed within the soundscape of the other albums and sound of Guns n Roses. Let's break this down using breakfast metaphors... 1 appetite is basically really nice ham sandwich with cheese and black coffe. Basic stuff that gets you goin 2 the illusions are basically your bacon and eggs with a glass of orange juice. a little more ellaborated but still very good 3 democracy is your BLT sandwich with a boiled egg and a caramel-latte. It has a bit of everything but it's more presented in a more elegant chill way.

OMG may be on the next album. There's a newer version with Buckethead on it. It's awesome, far better than the 1999 version. The version I heard also had Bumblefoot on a few short guitar solos randomly in the song. Hopefully, they keep it all Buckethead for the next album version since Bumble is out of the band, and I believe Axl favors BH over Bumble anyways.

It's my most listened to album of all time. It came out when i barely had an ear for music and i didn't like it much at first listen and over the next few years it stimulated my ears into understanding the many layers of artistry and pageantry until it became a uniquely amazing album that dovetailed into countless other albums from the musicians involved like Buckethead and A Perfect Circle. The earlier versions of the songs and and all the live bootlegs filled my iPods with complexity and nuance. It's sad to think that there'll never be a project as grandiose as this ever again.

Its a good album overall. Its frequently good, occasionally astonishing, and sometimes falls flat. As a result it just didn't match any expectations. It was neither a flat out masterpiece, nor was it a train wreck.....instead it was a mix of a masterpiece, a solid rock album, and a train wreck. It has some amazing highlights such as TWAT, better, Prostitute, Sorry.... It has some good rock songs like Chinese Democracy, Rhiad, street of dreams and it has some misguided songs like TIL, or IRS imho. And it needs to be said that Buckethead absolutely is the highlight of the album and he absolutely steps up to the position of GnR lead guitarist. He has some jaw dropping moments. If anything it makes me really want to hear all the other unreleased material that was recorded over several years (apparently around 4 albums worth).... especially all the other material recorded with Buckethead.

For me, right or wrongly Axl IS GnR and I've been in that headspace for a couple of decades, so being in that camp in the breakdown of fans of the band when Chinese Democracy finally released in 2008 I listened to it all the time, for the two year's following it's release I actually listened to it daily in full, different times without Spotify and listening to whatever I had on my limited memory space phone/MP3 🤣 so consequently I have always held CD in the highest regard, up there with Appetite for me. Maybe I have Stockholm syndrome from that couple of year's, but yeah I love the album. There was a time is one of the finest songs I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.

It's a great album. Don't let your Pro band (Slash, Duff, Izzy, Matt/Steve etc) stance cloud your judgement of Axl's last word on Gn'R. Really, it should be called "Rose & (hired) Guns", but semantics aside.. the facts are I was a fan of every member of vthe AFD GnR, Aswell as the UYI's, to a lesser degree, but still... So, there's no need for me to take sides.. at least not to the point where I refuse to appreciate some fine work by Axl. Funnily enough...my tastes on music are quite similar to Axl's evolving taste pallette of influences during this period. While I started playing guitar with slash as my number one influence, that blues rock swagger sound, with unashamedly gut wrenching melodic solos, is still a fundamental part of my style. But I got into industrial, too, during this period, with NIN being my chief influence, and Marylin Manson, Prodigy & the Dust Bros being secondary influences. Some of the other "Alternative" band influences..like Soundgarden, Nirvana (to a lesser extent, but still..), AIC..Pearl Jam.. I would add Smashing Pumpkins, personally, that I do not hear in Axl's Chi-Dem sound, but that influence my own sound. That's the only real difference. Not much!
@Ninjametal4 жыл бұрын
I have listened to that album a lot, and after many listens, I consider it thusly: It's not Guns. It's "The Amazing William Bailey (Axl) Show." The album has hundreds of cool parts, and almost no thoroughly good songs, because the only thing cohesive is that it's always over produced, punched-in, random instrument/player edits. Complex? Certainty. The genius Axl thought it was? Not quite. *The Robin Fink solo on "This I Love" is magical. After Axl's whining, operatic-hemorrhoid of a song bursts into beautiful guitar. I wish Slash would cover it exactly before extending the solo with his own take on it. That's my $.02

I thought it was a musical masterpiece. Upon hearing it when it was released, I can understand why it took so long to make. However, the fact that it took so long to come out, it all sounded and felt dated. I liked most of the songs except Shackler's, and This I love. Many of those ballads were the next logical progression after all those Use Your Illusions ballads. I really liked Robin's playing the most on it, and I'm a Tommy Stinson fan from the Mats' days. I ended up giving my copy away, as most of those songs I related to a pretty lonely time in my life I don't need to revisit. It was really a bummer looking through the credits and seeing no mention of any of the real OG Gunners. I didn't understand why B-head was in that band, he didn't seem to fit at all. Then again, neither did Bumblefoot. As most have commented, that WASN'T GN'R. I'm just not into those 80's style shredder dudes that are into that jerking-off type of guitar playing. I did go to see both the 2011 shows that Duff opened in Seattle (Duff stole the show in his hometown) and Van City, and they sounded great, really tight and polished. Fave tracks for me would be- Rhiad N' The Beduins, Street Of Dreams, TWAT. Ultimately , 10 years later it's no longer in my collection and I'm fine with that... BTW, you still need to mix your audio. The Dizzy Reed intro is WAY louder than your commentary. Even it out, use a compressor.

Appetite will always be the top dog. But, IMO, if you were to pull all the best songs off of the Illusions albums and put them on an album by themselves, and put the remainder of the Illusions stuff on their own album, the "good" Illusion album and Chinese Democracy would tie for second place (then Spaghetti, then the remainder of Illusion). Hate me if you want, but that's my opinion.

It just wasn't their best. Maybe i was kind of disappointed but my dumb younger self would never admit that at the time because I'd been waiting years for a new album. People do love it though. Hell, Matt from Avenged Sevenfold (my other favourite band ever and arguably one of the biggest bands of the 2000's) put out a tweet a while ago saying something like "As a society, are we finally ready to admit that Chinese Democracy buy @gunsnroses is a masterpiece". No-one really cares about Chinese Democracy because it's not really Gun n Roses...it's just 'Roses'. The whole thing that made Guns n Roses special was finding that X factor in the magic line up of half Hollywood Rose (Axl & Izzy), and half LA Guns (Slash & Steve Adler)....and "half" the 6'5" blonde answer to the "BASS Player Wanted" flyer posted... It was the combination of these 3 axis...the blues rock/shred, ACDC style of Slash n' Steve...the more epic song writing , Elton John style of Axl n' Izzy...mixed with the final magic ingredient of the punk rock influence of Duff. Together, Guns n' Roses formed - both figuratively N' literally.. It's the N' that was the most important part - more important than the 'Guns... more important the Roses'...
