Also, Slash is so laid back and down to earth, he really doesn’t care about stuff like a conflict with Nirvana. When you hear Slash interviews he’s constantly saying what he thinks about the question but it always ends with “but honestly I don’t really care, I wasn’t really involved with that”. Both Slash and Duff are kinda great guys

@russell_szabados
@russell_szabados 3 жыл бұрын
@Christopher Jefferson I agree about the vocals on “Would?”, they’re really difficult to emulate well. I’ve heard cover band singers nail the vocal range, but that’s only half the battle. They usually miss the passion and intensity that Layne brought to a vocal, he made you believe that HE believed every word he was singing and if it was about something negative, he made you feel like he was coming after you. He was like an actor. In a parallel dimension, Layne is probably still alive and a very successful actor in Broadway musicals. On “Would?”, he ramps up the intensity on the second chorus and it’s their best song because of that, IMHO.

I totally agree man, it’s crazy… even hearing other legendary vocalist cover would? Or man in the box and they just can’t hit it, they struggle if anything. Other insanely hard song to sing would be love hate love or “got me wrong” the unplugged version. Laynes range, control, and vibrato are just insane.

wildcatter63 I’ve never understood why Kurt hated Gnr they were so similar
@robRKR
@robRKR 4 жыл бұрын
@@Beamboy555 EASY to understand. Kurt equated GnR to the whole L.A. Hair Band scene, which GnR were only associated with cuz they were playing and coming up in the same Sunset Strip clubs that Motley Crue, Poison, and Cinderella, Faster Pussycat, etc,etc (Rainbow, Gazzarri's, and The Whiskey A GoGo) were at. They represented the decadent, glam, make up, cross-dressing, sell-out be famous, vapid, misogynistic, selfish attitude. GnR only briefly flirted with that because that's what going on. Axl only had the 'big hair' in their first 2 videos and it was a more dirty, gritty look, along with the rest of GnR. With some punk rock attitude thrown in. They were the more denim and leather, skulls, ripped Levi's & leather biker look/attitude. Motley Crue did the same thing. Flirted with Glam on 'Theater of Pain' ( Glam cover, clothes, hair) then did the more dirtbag, biker look for 'Girls, Girls, Girls' (just watch the 'Girls' video). GnR soared miles above that whole local scene into the stratosphere with 'Appetite'. Hair metal was already dying out by 1988-1989 and GnR were at their peak creatively and success wise with 'Use Your Illusion' in 1991. Sold out shows, etc. Nirvana didn't effect them. Many other older rock acts were having a creative spurt too. AC/DC put out their first good album with hits (Thunderstruck) since 1981's 'Back In Black'. Ozzy had put out his best album 'No More Tears' with radio hits, since his last success in the early 1980's with his first two albums with Randy Roads.Even John Cougar Mellencamp put out his hardest guitar driven Rock album 'Whenever We Wanted' that ad a few radio hits. In general the whole 'Grunge Scene' of 1991-1994 was bigger than just Seattle Bands.It was more than music too. It effected culture in general and art, film and literature. So Kurt had an issue with Axl and what he perceived GNR to represent. And he 'had' to hold up that 'punk rock ' front by dismissing them. Pretty easy to understand. Young, idealistic and naive.

@@robRKR Back In Black wasn't AC/DC's last big record before their mid 80s decline. That would be 1983's "For Those About To Rock", which was their first album to top the Billboard charts in America and had a couple of massive singles still played on classic rock radio today. And the album the song "Thunderstruck" was on is called "The Razors Edge".

And those bands like Poison, Motley Crue, Warrant, etc, they could still pack the house, they still had faithful fans to sell out shows to. The only way grunge hurt those bands was by their music rarely if ever got radio air play or their videos never got played on MTV. GnR were still played a lot.

Layne Staley had that darkness that added way more than just vocals, & Jerry Cantrell was & always will be the driving force behind Alice In Chains. Together, that whole lineup captured a certain vibe that couldn't really be done individually. I think eventually, years later if they (Layne & Kurt) were still around, that they would have been more mature & likely would work together on some project or come together for charity events, even with Guns & Roses. Despite the early drama of Axl, he really seemed to like Kurt, but Axl was probably really bummed out that it wasn't reciprocated, & so he acted out at the awards show backstage. There's tons of interviews where Guns & Roses talked about how they liked them, but Kurt had avoided them (GnR) because he allegedly thought they were a "big corporate rock band", or something along those lines. (Allegedly, because I don't know what was really said!). The point is, I think they would have eventually gotten over that lame beef stuff & maybe at least started talking to each other, even if they never worked together. Axl has done a lot of growing up over the years, & Kurt never had the chance, (killed by greedy wife & accomplices), & Layne needed a lot of help, but it was too late. Eventually, they would have ran into each other somewhere! We'll never know now though.

AIC had a huge impact. I was 20 at the time trying to do something in music, everybody's demo changed from Skid Row, GNR, etc., to sounding to AIC style vocals. I think this style scared a lot of girls away from rock. I love AIC, but in 1992 I wanted to be in some kind of metal band like LA Guns or Skid Row, and all of the sudden the scene just died. It would have been better if I'd been born 5 years earlier. Pantera had a huge impact also, as well as Bodycount, NIN, Chilipeppers, Faith No More, etc.. A lot of singers started going skin head style like Phil Anselmo. 1991 - 95 was a weird time for rock music. It's so Easy and Mr. Brownstone with Axl's low voice sound a lot like grunge, Scott from STP and Layne's voice. Looking back now it was all very stupid because it was all just rock music, the end result being rock died and now we have Hip Hop. Record companies should have supported all genres, but they didn't.

@@danielbrown1724 well, I agree that they are a harmonious group of guys, but my take on it is that there are many many bands or duo's or whatever that are just as or more harmonious than either the Beatles or AIC. You'd have to listen to different types of music tho. I listen to everything from bluegrass to country to blues to classical to hip hop to funk to rock to top forty to Spanish music to Tito Puente. Selena. Butthole Surfers. The new wave of the 80's. Please don't get me wrong, I love both the Beatles and Alice.

NaturalLaw isTheSolution Yeah, but after Pearl Jam’s Ten, they actually HIDE from the mainstream, totally retreated, stopped making music videos, fighting Ticketmaster and whatnot. Just as Soundgarden had a HUGE hit with Superunknown, Black Hole Sun was a massive single, it was played CONSTANTLY on radio and MTV. Soundgarden were actually the bigger band from ‘94-‘96 in terms of popularity. Then they broke up. I’m guessing you weren’t actually around back then, you would certainly of remembered this.

What musician would hate Slash? Seems like one of the chillest, nicest rock stars ever. Guns apparently tried to reach out to all the “grunge” bands in the early 90s. Granted, the culture around late 80s LA bands vs early 90s Seattle bands clashed, naturally. Axl was a diva- no doubt about that. But I loved GnR, just as I loved Nirvana a couple years later.

I don't think Grunge did anything to diminish Guns Appetite album. Unfortunately for Guns, Appetite was the first and best album, the only competition was for Guns to make a better album than Appetite... As far as the rest of the hair metal bands, Grunge was a nail in their coffins. Only because you really couldn't tell the difference between one and another. They all sounded the same, they all used the same formula. Guns, on the other hand, was much more real, more daring and far more talented.

Even if you have do it again, you'd be surprised...yes they have the most hits off of AFD but a true guns fan finds a lot of hidden gems on the illusions that are just as good if not better. Kurt was a totally unique artist in that world. I wonder if he self destructed, partially because he found that he became what he was against. As for Layne - he was always my favorite, a combination of vulnerability and strength, which very few artists possess.

I liked the way Kurt brought in a new original dynamic that also blended previous sounds, styles & musical establishments, in the face of monotonous style copying that had become embedded into 80s Rock and Roll. We could feel that something had to break off with that to open the door to make Rock n Roll Creative again, like anything that gets caught up in monotonous repetition & boring aspects of what has been done before. When Nirvana came out we all knew that was it the first time we listened to it! Dude got a bit more sarcastic about living issues in places than some but showed where his heart was with it in the then current developing relations of Eternal Beings. Which also helped move past negative aspects by facing what some of the Element Issue developments were in Goddess, God, Feminine, Masculine Eternal Being relations at that time. Layne went a lot deeper in Spiritual Matters that pertain to all of us in living with the negative aspects of Tyrannical typed Eternal Being strategy Relations versus Freedom of choice in self Creating & empowering ourselves of Children given to be by our Eternal Mother Goddesses. The choices of either proceeding in being in inIStance through self creation, empowerment & Endless Growth & enrichment, or ending to be in inistance as a copy aspect living under the rule & theft of some older, temporarily stronger, more negative than positive, stupid thieverous Eternal Being, was made clear & affirmed to us by Layne. In what we are, were or may feel about those kinds of beings, or being like them or that any, even though we have made a lot of bad choices also. As we all have to face these issues & know why it is better & necessary to be positive, Endless enriching & growing as we choose to and help enforce that for all of from ourselves or any other. Instead of becoming the dead end rutt slave of another leading to the collapse of both slave & attempted false master, self formed slave to nothingism by theft, lying Eternal Everwas Being pretending to be our Everwas Eternal Mother Goddess, and giving us a hard time about finding the truth of ourselves & in establishing Endless Eternal Prosperity & Unity for All who agree, Enforced through the knowledge of what is required to make it so, forever!!!
