Higher energy .357 magnum is better IF: 1. If the .357 bullet is designed to exploit the greater energy to do more tissue damage, and 2. If you think the tissue damage level of 9mm is inadequate, and 3. If you think the tissue damage level of .357 is adequate. If both are inadequate, there is no difference, but the advantage might go to the pistol that holds more rounds. If both are adequate, there is no difference.
@keithgraham95473 жыл бұрын
@@DonMeaker You are absolutely incorrect. You need to just go check some simple physics or watch the Paul Harrell video, he did it for you. Best case for a 9mm is a full size pistol using some of the best high-end hyper ammo, vs. A 357 snubbie using run of the mill target ammo. Anything with similar ammo and/or barrel lengths isn't even close. As for number of rounds, you can carry a 7- or 8- round 357. In real life civilian defensive shootings, best studies show average number of shots < 3, median # of shots = 1, and reloads in about 0.6% of the events. The industry can push "The One Round To Rule Them All," but a 9 cannot compare to power or flexibility of a 357. Having said that, a .22 is perfectly adequate in probably 80-90% of defensive situations.

This is a great comment. The whole point should be about overall usability and effectiveness. One doesn't need to falsify anything or make exaggerated claims about anything. one can say "yeah it may not be quite as powerful than a .357, BUT I get more capacity and less recoil, which means faster follow-up shots and maybe greater accuracy in a hurry. No argument that the auto provides a faster reload. Some point out the lower noise level compared to any magnum. For any of these or any other reasons one may prefer a 9mm and there is no reason to have to justify or excuse that choice. 9x19 is the most popular caliber in LE and SD roles and they are served well by it. It doesn't have to be compared to anything. Use it, carry it, shoot it, and love it. BTW, if you prefer a revolver the 9x19 sucks as a revolver cartridge so a .38 Spl.+P or .357 mag. is probably going to be your best option, or most comparable anyway. Again, just use it and be happy knowing it's a great choice.

@peggynulsen1365 Peggy, the .357 Magnum IS a 9mm (projectile diameters are the same), so your statement that the “9mm is useless” in bear country needs some qualification. The Buffalo Bore 125-grain full metal jacket flat nose as fired from a 4.76-inch barrel going 1300 feet per second is quite formidable as a woods load. Moreover, a 147-grain 9 x 23 mm going at 1300 fps is even more capable. Additionally, as I previously stated, .357 (inch) is the English unit of measure equivalent of a metric unit of measure of 9 millimetre. A 180-grain .357 projectile loaded so that it travels from the muzzle of a 4-inch barrel at 1500 fps is IN .44 magnum energy specification should your wish to have that level of power FROM a .357 handgun instead of actually using a .44 magnum handgun/cartridge combination.

Versatility is what I choose the 357 for. 1st I handload for it. All the 38sp loadings can be used. Factory 357 ammo is easy to get. The 357 in a handgun for PSD and the 110-125 grain bullets is the handgun side of the subject. All the Heavy bullets are Hunting loadings. So far I've taken 2 Michigan Deer, inside of 75 yards and one Hog at 105 yards all One shot kills. Hand loading opens a full chapter for the 357 magnum cartridge. One manual lists 11 different bullet types and shapes. Bullet weights range from 90gn to a whopping 180gn. My 357's are a 4" SS revolver and a single shot break action rifle with a 22in barrel, on top is a 3x9x40 scope. The factory 125 JHP sizzles thru the rifle estimated FPS is around 1700. The 22in barrel adds ALOT. Rifle at 100 yards from the bench, 3 shots on top of each other right on the POA. Factory ammo is about $1.00 a round. Hand Loading my per round cost is .14 cents. Rifle and revolver combo great match. I shoot a lot of 22rf, too, a bolt and auto rifles and a 4"SS 8 shot revolver.

It is my conviction that, even from a 3"-barrel wheelgun, the .357 magnum would still outperform the 9mm+p+ provided that both rounds are of about the same weight. My $0.02.
@GunSam Жыл бұрын
A lot of the numbers suggest that it's really only the 115 gr variety of +P+ that has any legitimate 'stopping power'. Long track record of the old Federal 9BPLE 115 gr+P+ working about as good as .40 S&W, .45 ACP or .357 Mag - but even going to 124 gr 9mm in any variety seems to change up the energy dump and not make it work so well, partly due to 9mm's bullet nose design where it goes deep BEFORE it starts expanding. The .357 Mag expands immediately whether it's a 110 gr, 125 gr or 158 gr and usually fragments. Thus it's more of a reliable stopper no matter the weight, it's just the heavier the bullet the more it penetrates, which may or may not matter if a front on shot is made, heavier is better when making a side shot.

At that time I just started to get inundated with comments on videos I did with my .357 Mag 686, that "9mm rivals .357 Magnum". Finally, I had one person admit (while he berated me for MY "lies" lol) that a MAC video proved that 9mm rivals .357 Magnum in a video. BTW, I commented almost 3 years ago on that video this: "My biggest issue with cartridge comparison is that there is no ONE particular load. Comparing cherry picked crap .38 spl and .357 mag ammo vs great 9x19 ammo don't fly with me. I just chronographed some Buffalo Bore 158 gr+P .38 special in my 4" revolver at 1,150+ fps for 465+ ft lbs energy. In my 342PD .38 special, even with most basic 125gr +P loads I get well over 900 FPS all day of the week, nowhere near where that Starfire .38+P is at. Most ALL .38 special+P 125 gr loads come in at 900 fps+ and 225 ft lbs energy in a 1.875" snubby. I would suggest testing many variations of cartridges in multiple guns and get averages rather than cherry picking crap .38 spl and .357 mag ammo and comparing it to one of the best 9mm loads in comparison." MAC's response: "You’re an internet expert, of course nothing flies with you. I explain the choice of ammo in the opening of the video." My response to that: "Say what you will. Ridiculous choice are to each their own. I could load a .380 with 1 grain of pistol powder and then show how a .22 short is more powerful as well"......(No more was said after that) But seriously, looking back 3 years later his video seems even worse, I mean Starfire .38? Really?!! And American Gunner .357? I got like 1,250 FPS with American Gunner 125 gr .357 in my 686 when a good round like this BB is 1,600 FPS and even Remington UMC is like 1,450 FPS.

Later the agency authorized .45 ACP and the .38 Super semi-automatic personally owned handguns for duty carry with a proviso that IF 9mm JHP ammunition ever could equal the 110 grain .357, it too would be authorized. When the +P+ 9mm 115 grain JHP at approximately 1300 fps came on line it was adopted for duty carry. Both the 110 grain .357 and the +P+ 9mm served us well for over 10 years.

well if you have two cartridges that both take about the same amount of pressure, except one is twice as long you can infer which one is going to be more powerful even if revolver cartridges use different powders that burn at different rates than semi auto. The difference between the two becomes even more apparent at heavier bullet weights, with the .357 running 158 or 180gr. bullets. The difference also is apparent when you start adding barrel length, where the .357 really starts to break away even further in power. Some people are just a bit daft when comparing rounds. No one would say that .40 rivals 10mm or that .45 rivals .44 mag, but you hear a lot people saying 9mm rivals .357. I think some of this is because people are thinking about snub length barrels (2 inch or less) vs. a full 4 inch 9mm, where if you are shooting lighter 110gr or 125gr 357 the two are much more comparable.

Jumping a little deeper into the fray... Most of the pressure limits on handgun ammo is set against the limits of the guns chambered for it. Gun makers design their guns based on SAAMI limits. Competitors run 9mm up to 50,000 psi but the guns have to be custom built for it. There are a series of downsides to this practice that will keep it from being production ammo. +P+ ammo is using up some of the safety margin for guns designed for +P. One of the amazing things about the 9mm cartridge is it's ability to go from mild to wild with minimal problems. Some of this may not be a good idea but it's amazing what you can get away with in a 9mm Para cartridge. The 357 magnum first came out with a SAAMI (if SAAMI existed in the 1930's) slightly over 40,000 psi. That worked well for the big N frame revolvers it was chambered for . But when the K frame revolvers came out, this ammo would put the revolver out of timing in no time. The solution was for SAAMI to lower the max pressure for the rounds. All this is just real world engineering that is done to most any product. However.... I think it is fair to say that if you want flat out wide open maximum performance apples to apples comparisons within established limits then Buffalo Bore is the place to go.

It's hard with gender equality. Not that i'm against it, but departments should stop with the whole....only one gun period. Why not have lets say an M&P line for each department, some in 9mm, some in .40, some in .45 and officers can qualify on whichever suits them best? I've always been curious about the cylinder gap. Could you put that to the test using a semi auto 357 and a revolver to see if the gap really takes away that 5% of potential energy????

I don't think anyone will argue that 9mm equals .357mag...in general. The idea is that a 9mm snub using +p ammo will be equal to defense level .357 ammo out of a snub. Other people have tested this and in some cases the 9mm is even a hair faster. Sure you can load a .357 with full power ammo and there's no contest, but that's not the argument. Do love your channel btw.

Thanks. You would be surprised, having even a small gun channel I still get 500 comments a day on a new video day, in addition to regular comments. I still get the whole "9mm rivals .357 Magnum" in part because of MAC releasing a video on the subject 3 years ago.

@@53ROK No their trying to make the 9mm something it will never be instead of imbracing it for what it is and that's that it is probly the best semi auto caliber you could ever hope for,,,look at it's virues,,,to start it's a very effiencient little round meaning it uses a very small overall powder charge to get the rather good performance that it has all things considered,,,that effiencientcy means and leads to the other possitive virtues of low recoil lower flash and noise and the gun will stay a bit cleaner in general leading to less maintenance or lack of maintainence induced problems,,,and all of that also means it can be packed into some really small and light compact pistols while still being not too awefull terrible to shoot and still carry fair round count,,,,and it's all the more needed in terms of power for pretty much any human target on the planet,,,,,I love my 357 wheel guns,,,, but in comparison the 357 is NOT an effiecient round, it takes looooonnng barrels in terms of a carry gun and LOTS of slow burning and dirtier burning powder to get those big performance numbers (more than twice as much of it than a 9mm),,, which in terms of effienciency leads itself to heavier weight bullets (the 357 actually becomes a bit more effiencient with 158+ grain bullets ),,,,and because of those big powder charges you end up with recoil that is rather brisk to say the least and more than many want to deal with especially in a very small super light package, guns like the S&W 340pd that weighs a mere 11.8 ounces will send many guys crying for their momma after just a shot or 2,,,I usaully only carry 38 or 38+p in mine beacause of how it is to shoot,,,,, and I have been shooting way bigger caliber handguns for 40 year now nearly,, add to that that the 357 is one noisy SOB compared to the 9mm and also WAY more flash and the 357 with anything but fairly reduced loads is just not the best anti human defense tool a guy could have,,,it's also way overkill in terms of raw power,,,bear in mind that 1600 fps such as sam was getting in this video is NOT the complete upper limits of the 357,,,you saw how easily the spent cases extracted,,,,,well in the past when i was a bit braver or maybe a tad more foolish depending on your view of things I tried prentending I was Elmer Keith and come up with something new,,,,,so I used a ultra stong Ruger built 7.5 inch barreled blackhawk to see just how far the 357 could be pushed (35 years ago now),,,well the with the case stuffed as full of 2400 or H110 type powders and still be able to barely get a bullet also suffed far enough into the case while not being too long to fit the cylinder((loaded longer slightly than normal specs) (or simlar that I experimented with that was available then,,,faster burning powders were not what you want because pressures go though the roof before reasonable gains are realized),,,anyhow with these HUGE powder charges I was able to get velocities out of that 7.5 inch barrel that were starting to knock on the back door of nearly the 2000 FPS mark with a 125 grain XTP bullet,,,or in other words nearing the performance of the now extinct or nearly so 357 remington maximum,,,however I was doing it at what was without a dought rather dangerous pressure levels because not only were primers looking flatened severly and extraction difficult but primers were also starting to show signs of completely blowing out from the tell tale black ring starting to form around the primer,,,,,anyhow at that point I backed it off just enough to no longer have primer or extraction issues and that loading is still what I use in all my 357's as my full house carry or whatever loads, and from a 4 inch barrel it still rips along at a smidge over 1700 fps, however from watching guys like Sam here and a couple other guys that use ballistics gel to test,,,something I never had back then,,,, I have started backing off even more in my recent rounds because at such speeds over expansion and bullet seperation become more of a negative than the extra speed or energy is a possitive,,,to everything there is a limit,,,,anyhow my carry these days is a 9mm and I embrace it very favorably for those possitive virtues,,,I just wish the over the top fan boys would learn to do the same instead of thinking they have to protect their man card or something by trying to make it something it is not nor will ever be.

Interesting and useful to me. My primary is a .357, because I've been around a long time (arguably because of the weapon). This Summer (of 2023) a viral video from a Dallas shooting during an attempted break in, saw all 9mm rounds go through the door, and disappear into the wall behind the bad guy-- of the apartment across the breezeway. The same thing happened to a friend just before I arrived at his apartment-- also in Dallas. His neighbor across the breezeway had fired a round at an attempted intruder, and the round struck just above my friend's door, passed through the exterior wall, into the ceiling just above a cabinet-- never to be found. Wanting to be mindful of such over-penetration (and so mostly by control of elevation as my friend's neighbor had done) it seems the added power does flatten more on initial impact. Not only delivering more punch, but reducing over-penetration. Home defense tactics may well include needing to penetrate a door or wall, because of the concealment those offer the good and the bad-- but the bad may misunderstand as cover. Firing from a low position, aim elevated to compensate, the bullet would likely pass over any persons behind the bad guy. Although few ranges are set up for it, perhaps shooting from a crouch or a knee ought to be a regular part of every range day?

Same here. In my house, I think a good 9mm is best. People always talk home defense and wanting to limit penetration, but i'm the opposite. If there's an armed killer kicking at my door, I want something that can put like 10 rounds through the door!

If you look at the equation for force, any increase in weight is linear. Any increase in velocity is exponential. Speed kills. And for me the most important trait of a bullet is expansion and keeping all that energy in the target. The way that 357 mushroomed out in that last gel shot was the one that sealed the deal. I still love the 9mm, it's my EDC (Glock 43) but my Ruger GP100 is what's in my nightstand. God help my hearing if I ever have to shoot it indoors without hearing protection! lol And I have those Buffalo Bore high powered for my magnum. When I get done with all seven shots, I have a hell of a time extracting the brass. They swell up and take up the clearance. Like a press fit.

We have great defensive bullets today, but .357 is SO versatile. The .38 Super and the later .357 SIG have claimed to rival .357 - and .357 SIG did, in one bullet weight and barrel length, for one application. But you won’t equal the .357 unless it really is the .357 - so if you must have it in an auto pistol, get a Coonan.
@Wedgetail963 жыл бұрын
These over pressure 9mm loads are closer to a standard .38 Super then .357 Magnum.
@aaronkoch773 жыл бұрын
9mm can only rival .357 in barrels shorter than 2”. With that little barrel travel the 357 is mostly noise and recoil, still at least as powerful as the 9mm but the performance gap is very small. The longer the barrel the greater the discrepancy. I’m of the opinion that anyone who shoots .357 out of that short a barrel is a glutton for punishment.
@GunSam3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I carry a snub .357 while my .327 is out for repair, and I carry Buffalo Bore .38+P because it's the best choice. In small guns it needs to be 9mm or .38+P, leave the .357 Mag to a full size gun.

You just never know. It's one of those weird things where even if I were to take lets say a Ruger, or Glock 5" barrel and compare to my M&P, they might get totally different numbers. My bet is the numbers might be similar though.
