You never knew me I never knew you but your music and voice felt like I wasn’t alone in times and I find that amazing. Still got the CD with translucent green tray and booklet. This album is nightmarish. Very sluggish, ghastly, almost industrial sounding. The booklet perfectly compliments the sound with illustrations of disfigured humans, primitive medicinal treatments, and other oddities like disgruntled mutant-animals on trial and diabolical bottles floating on vast black oceans. Then there's the knowledge that Layne was so deep in addiction, the band couldn't tour and there were rumors of him covering himself in ski masks whenever he performed live, to hide his condition. If you thought Dirt was dark- and it certainly is- this one will grab you claw in hand.

I had nothing when I started using heroin but what I thought was nothing was everything. My life turned to hell. And I found out what "nothing" truly means. Feeling so alone that you start to think that you're already dead and that you're really just a ghost that is only floating through life. You participate but it feels distant and conversations come and go without any retention of their words or meaning but still you feel like they're real until you try and remember them. Then you come back to your senses and it's an even worse feeling because you aren't dead you're just depressed.

And Jerry is STILL "talking" to Layne in his lyrics all these years later. Degradation Trip was him getting his anger, rage & sadness out, BGWTB is the bands "official goodbye" to Layne, but even in "Brighten" (named, I hope, for the fog of _"Layne the Legend"_ finally lifting), Jerry still has a few things to say: "Held together by what will not die..." (on "Dismembered") I think he's finally coming to grips with Layne forever being a part of him, whether he wants that or not. Poor guy can't get away from him, after all these years. On Degradation Trip, there's even a song with lyrics to the effect of asking journalists "Don't you have anything better to ask me? Can't you interview me for who I am, and what I bring to the table? Does it always have to be about HIM?" Think about what that does to someone of Jerry's talent and stature. He's monstrously talented, wrote nearly the music, and most of the lyrics for AIC, yet all anyone wants to talk about is LAYNE. He'll never just be "Jerry Cantrell," he'll always be the sticky note tacked on after Layne's top billing (not to mention he's already a "junior" in name as well--the guy can't win). No wonder he's "a little bitter." 😭🎸🫀💔❤

This is one of those albums that takes a bit of time and listening to get used to, esp. if you love Dirt and Facelift. But man, once it grabs a hold of you it really melts into your brain. I love the apocalyptic elements. The downtuned guitars, weird melodies, distorted sounds. Given the context of the album and the bands slow and prolonged "death" it perfectly captures the sound. Its a great album to listen to when you feel like the world is shit.
