Great review! I think Gunstar Super Heroes really gets a lot of undeserved flak for not meeting up to people's expectations of a Gunstar Heroes sequel, but you outlined its strengths and weaknesses excellently. I bought GSH back at its time of release, and never played the original game until years later, so I didn't have any comparisons bogging the game down for me. That said, I do find the core mechanics of the game to be better (expanded melee repertoire, free shot and fixed shot switching, and I count the lack of weapon mixing largely as a plus), though the levels that switch the game style are a mixed bag. On that note, I'd like to point out that almost all those levels are references to Sega arcade games, not just the Flicky level! The levels where you ride on Yellow's ship and shoot down incoming enemies reference After Burner, and the (awful) helicopter level is a reference to the overhead stages of Thunder Blade. Furthermore, the strange amount of cut content in the game's data (including more Sega references to Altered Beast and ESWAT, and a whole sprite sheet for Golden Silver showing him being planned to move around and attack!) points towards development being a little rushed, which would explain some of the weaker enemy programming and level design. Overall, I find the game a great experience for the platform it's on. It's visually stunning for a GBA game and runs smooth as silk, and those aforementioned gameplay changes really expand and speed up the formula. It definitely needs a reevaluation from its detractors.

I'm old enough to remember Gunstar Heroes being the game to give the Mega Drive a second life when it came out the first time. Fond memories of the game bought me back into gaming many, many years later and Treasure games were the ones I belatedly bought old systems for that I could never had owned as a teenager. It's probably the single most important and loved videogame of all time for me, and naturally I consumed the GBA re-imagining (exactly how I saw it too) and also bought the M2-produced PS2 'Treasure Box' compilation it sits in. Anyway, I've never come across such a considered, well judged appraisal of GH or its GBA namesake before, I'm beyond impressed. I think it's worth mentioning that the recent 3DS reissue includes a mode allowing for on-the-fly shot switching modes, which I found helpful and also necessary as alas a) I'm not quite the master of this game as I once was and b) without it I think some modern gamers could find it too brutally hard to see later levels. Well done on producing such fantastically literate, analytical and thorough takes on some well deserving yet sometimes misunderstood works of art. Thank you.

+Fattydeposit That's an awesome story! We all have that one video game that we will always remember and come back to. I don't have any nostalgia for these games like you do, but they are still some of the most remarkable ones I've played. Especially the first Gunstar Heroes, I love it. Also, thanks for your compliment! I am glad my reviews has done these two gems justice. :)

This is actually probably my favorite game of all time. It’s fast paced action and responsive yet simple controls make this game a gem. It’s very unique and I love the story telling and how it makes 5 different stages seamlessly work together since your flying from one to the other. I definitely wish this franchise could be revived. It’s so original and unique, it would provide endless possibilities for today’s gaming industry.

Just for you to know, and unlike many modern systems, the GBA has no sound chip... at all (yeah, games have their soundfont but had to use CPU runtimes to produce sound, or emulation if you wanna call it). If you didn't found any slowdown during your playthroughs then the game's code it's just fenomenaly optimized. Also, you indeed do very indepth, honest reviews, that's pure awesomeness.

This is the first time I have heard of this game/series so this is a great introduction! Love the video! Looking at this game, I see a possible inspiration for the Gunvolt series. Gameplay elements are quite similar with fast-paced, run-and-gun action complimented by great visuals/sound effects and special moves. Seeing as there are two characters, this seems like a perfect Switch game for protagonists, Red and Blue, to match the Joy-Con controllers. Hm...if only... Man. I wish I were able to go back and play some of these games. They look so fun. How did I miss this? My first experiences with gaming/Nintendo come from the GBA and GameCube.

Oh jeez, at first I thought this game was a actual sequel until I saw footage of it being pretty much a re-imagining of the original for a Nintendo handheld. It works for what it offers and does seem fun, but unless there's usually some more stages or bonus content thrown into the mix (for example Donkey Kong Country 3 on the GBA) I usually prefer the original material to play as well. Still, awesome review there, Michael. Can't wait for the next Treasure lineup.

I don't believe I've played this one. It looks like a ton of fun. I didn't hear about it until looking up Treasure's list of games and found a sequel. I was pleased to see it wasn't one of those Japan ONLY sequels. Imagine if this was released for the N64, but in a graphical style like Mischief Makers? That would be pretty kewl.

Great video as always! I really enjoy Gunstar Super Heroes, and there is a good reason it is on everyone's hidden gems list. I too was surprised this was more of a remake than a sequel. Like you said in the video, it works. Many things were changed for the better, a lot of things were streamlined, and they really threw a TON of rotation effects in here. I didn't mind the simplified weapon system, since everyone pretty much used there favorite 1-2 weapons in the first one anyway. Really awesome video, I was not aware of the script changes when playing on hard, good stuff!
@RetropolisZone9 жыл бұрын
implantgames Thanks mate! Agreed with a lot of your points, but I do still think the original has an edge over this remake/sequel. I feel the difficulty balancing and challenge level were better and the multiplayer lacking in Super Heroes is really a shortcoming. Still, very worthwhile game!

Another cool game that the U.S. didn't receive because of the incredibly stupid "we don't want enhanced 32-bit 2D games we want clunky new polygonal 3D games". So ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I love myself some Armored Core and the like on PS1 but rejecting the next generation of sprite based graphics is beyond crazy and dumb to me. No way you would ever convince me that FFVII looked better than Mega Man X4 back in 97.

Excellent review, I appreciate the points you make and you how display game-play that directly depict the criticisms you're disclosing. I enjoy the first Gunstar and definitely want to try this one. Really unfortunate that I never heard of this gem back then, but only recently... Some games seriously don't get the promotion they deserve. I mean it's no surprise, the Genesis is super underappreciated in the states, so a game succeeding a Gen franchise coming out for the GBA is barely gonna turn heads. Shining Force Resurrection of the Dark Dragon was the same I believe. Btw, what happened to the Alien Soldier review? That is *arguably the very best game for the Genesis/MD* , I hope you give that game its proper due and justice, it's amazing and insanely stupid that we didn't receive it in the states, you guys in the UK were lucky.
@colonelsandwich6417 жыл бұрын
I don't think the genesis was underappreciated in the states, the Genesis outsold the SNES in the states. Also, Alien Soldier is freaking awesome, it's available on steam nowadays for a measly 2 bucks! I hope a Dynamite Headdy review is in the future as well, that game is also sadly overlooked.
@retrosoul87707 жыл бұрын
The Gen outsold the Snes for most of the generation (91-94), but when DKC came out, the momentum shifted and the Snes ending up winning in the end I'm pretty sure (in the states). www.vgchartz.com/analysis/platform_totals/ The key word though, is that the Gen *is* underappreciated, not was. Today most people only recognize it for Sonic, Golden Axe and an uncensored Mortal Kombat, a fine display of ignorance and unfairness. Whenever you read an article on "greatest consoles ever", every one I've ever read, recognizes the Snes for its great catalog of games, but imply that the Gen didn't have its fair share of classics by only noting the aforementioned^... It's unfortunate, as for Alien Soldier, I bought a repro for my Model 1 and enjoy it that way, the way I wish we could have enjoyed it back in the day! And yeah Dynamite Headdy is another great one, as well as Beyond Oasis.
@colonelsandwich6417 жыл бұрын
Yep, it's kinda sad, the Genesis had Rocket Knight Adventures, the Thunderforce games, Contra Hard Corps, MUSHA, Road Rash, I hear Phantasy Star IV is pretty good, the Shinobi games, I could go on... I actually bought Beyond Oasis a little while ago on Steam! I haven't played much of it yet though, but it's by Ancient so it should be good. How much does a repro of Alien Soldier go for?
@retrosoul87707 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it sucks man, because the great titles we mentioned +others will go largely unnoticed going forward and the legacy of the Genesis as a timeless game console will continue to suffer. But on a more positive note, this is where I got mine, highly recommended! retrogamerandbackups.com/t/genesis-games-with-case-option?page=3 I also bought Musha, Gleylancer, Contra HC and a Hagane repro (on Snes) from this guy, pretty legit and pleased with the purchases. Beyond Oasis is fantastic, the best offensive move-set for a 16-bit top down game rivaling Terranigma's imo, gonna need to google the attack list though lol. PSIV is def a classic, I'm currently almost finished with my 1st playthrough and really enjoying it. Are you just getting into the Gen? Or the 16-bit era altogether? If so I hope you enjoy it it's great.
@colonelsandwich6417 жыл бұрын
I've been playing games from the 16-bit era since 2008, when I first got Sonic Mega Collection plus for my PS2. A couple years late I started collecting and playing SNES and NES games , and last year I finally got a Sega Genesis. The only game I have for it so far is Dynamite Headdy, but I hope to get more. Also, this website is awesome!

The original NDS had the ability to play GBA games. Nintendo always emphasized this feature, as "backwards compatibility", while marketing the then, new, NDS. I think that allowed for a smoother transition from the Gameboy line, to The DS brand. Treasure, in my opinion, dropped the ball in marketing this game. Here in the US, I don't recall any advertising with the exception of an occasional magazine ad. They should have pushed more assurance that this game would also play on the NDS, as well.

Most people know Treasure for Gunstar Heroes, but I know them for a game called Mischief Makers for the Nintendo 64. You might have heard of it, even though it is rather obscure it does have a decently sized cult following (wouldn't be surprised if someone else mentioned it on this or the last video). Just wondering if you know about it, and if you do if you would review it as it's one of my favorite games. Though it is very different from Gunstar.

+Retropolis Zone +Ghaleonh41 Ah, this old bit of trivia. It's not entirely untrue, but it's rather misrepresentative of what Treasure employees did before they joined the company. The short of it is that two of Treasure's main programmers worked on SCIV and Contra 3 (but not both on both games). It's rather disingenuous to say they were "made by Treasure" when in fact the majority of Konami games Treasure employees worked on saw them in smaller roles and separate from most of their future coworkers. Sorry to be a stick in the mud, but these rumors have been going around for over a decade online and just won't die despite credit information being readily available.

I actually really want to play Super Heroes, but like you mentioned in the review, Co-Op broke the deal for me because the overall pleasure and enjoyment I got out of the original was playing this game with a friend on the couch. And this was back in 2010-2012. So the overall experience and enjoyment are still relatively fresh in my mind. Tons of humor and conversation was had while playing the game and just the co-op experience was so important that it became half of my overall experience with the game. To the point that I can't think about playing Gunstar without another person. As such, the second i learned Super Heroes was single player, my desires were basically deflated within moments, which might sound really shallow to some; but it just held that much value to me as someone who played the original back in the 90s, but REALLY played it in 2010-2012. Which is a shame tbh; but there isnt anything I can do about it ha.
@nathanielmarion94965 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree Gunstar Super Heroes is too superficial, should've had 2-player, everything was done in a superficial arcade-ish form. But the game does have potential. Some of the gimmicky side stuff wasn't refined enough, they were ambitious thoughts that were trying too hard to be new, the side-scroll shooting mini-game is a perfect example, there's just way too much going on and the controls are just too complicated, it's a very frustrating minigame, and this is consistent troughout the game with their other stupid minigames that were just messy, frustrating, pointless, senseless and not fun to play. They didn't put enough thought into them, they should've used inspiration from other games and kept it simple. Another thing I don't like about this game is the huge amount of senselessness in this game, there's too much random stuff. Like that one mini-game with the teddy bear, I'm sure it's referencing something Japanese but to me it's nonsense, and how some of the flying soldiers will literally drop explosive barrels on you, like wtf? Barrels? Like wtf were they thinking? Or like the bubble stage or that boss that's a giant robot made of blocks, or that giant goo monster, or that stage with the chicks and that weird alien worm thing. Senselessness on a frustrating level Treasure is known for when it comes to character design, style and story, they do stuff that's too ambitious and in over their heads that they can't translate the idea, so the idea comes out unrelatable, overcomplicated or undercomplicated and messy. But at some point these guys have to look at their ideas real good and stop being content with so much inconsistency, and take themselves seriously, it's as if they think nobody will notice. It's very frustrating when you have other games with great stories and characters that would've been perfect if blended with Treasure's game mechanic ideas.

Actually, releasing a game on the GBA in 2004 wasn't uncommon. A lot of developers didn't fully commit to the DS until about 2006 or 2007. Even Nintendo themselves were noncommittal, as evidenced by Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Rhythm Tengoku

The lightning quick action ,explosive action ,chaotic scenes and bonkers variety have me in love.The bosses are also very intense and instant reflex oriented It's such a damn shame that the game did so poorly and omitted the distinct features of its predecessor otherwise it might have been a cult classic and se might have been blessed with more gunstar super heroes inspired games It seems that the game fails to offset it's flaws such as lack of co op ,multiplayer ,deep story ,more replay value ,customization ,intricate level design by its bravo Gameplay alone. I tried to play Super Heroes but I didn't care for retreading nature of the game, large character sprites and I found the game overall not particularly impressive. I did not finish it.

This game really is bad compared to the original and the high prices for it don't even justify it.
@briankenney95287 жыл бұрын
The screen is too small and you're too cramped for the game play

I'm sorry, but Gunstar Super Heroes is inferior to the original in almost every way. The weapons are worse, the explosions don't feel as satisfying, the characters are too damn big, the shooting stage is boring, they left all the BULLETS out of the jungle boss fight for crying out loud... and nobody needed or asked for this much damned text. It's an action game! Not an RPG!

what..but why red looks like a girl in this version?
