My first pistol was a P-38 in 1972 and it’s still my favorite. Love the safety features like the hammer drop safety and the chamber loaded indicator. Also I much prefer double action. Very accurate and reliable.

It's not my favorite, but I am very understanding of the adoration. It is possibly the technically the most advanced pistol of its time and it is hard to argue that it is not the most futuristic, for better or worse.

"Inspired the Beretta M9". It didn't. The M9 is internally / mechanically exactly the same. It just looks slightly different from the outside. Its a copy, slightly other form of the grip, longer slide and frame, some funktional parts look a bit different. But still, mechanically the M9 is just a P38.

One can argue that the m9 is a simplified P38. what means it's more of an evolution than a copy therefore inspired.

@@lifepolicy Beretta's designs have all been of the same principal since the Beretta Model 1931. The M9/92 is based off of the Beretta 51, which came from the 31. They simply added a DA/SA and double stack mag. It's not based on the P38 really.
@lifepolicy
@lifepolicy Жыл бұрын
@@bad74maverick1 you are wrong here. Unlike its predecessors, the Beretta 1951 has a locking mechanism. That locking mechanism is what is technically identical to the P38.
@bad74maverick1
@bad74maverick1 Жыл бұрын
@@lifepolicy That doesn't mean the M9 or the 51 was "inspired" by the P38. The Beretta 51 came from the Beretta 31/35. The Beretta design of pistols began with the model 1915. There were improvements obviously with each model including the locked breech but hardly makes it "inspired", the pistol itself came from a design that predated the P38 but later used several features. It's like saying the G3 was "inspired" by the MG42 because it too uses a roller delayed blowback bolt mechanism and nothing else.

Just to clarify... Walther P-38 DID NOT inspire the M9, or rather, Beretta 92F. Walther P-38 WAS inspired from another Beretta pistol, namely Modelo 1915. Which is basically the grandfather of 92F.
@Gunstorian
@Gunstorian Жыл бұрын
The "dropping block" recoil system was first utilized in the P.38, which went on to be used in the Beretta M51 then the M92/M9. If you take the two apart you will see the similarities behind the "inspiration". But the exposed barrel design was indeed started with the Beretta 1915, and continues even into modern Beretta designs today.

@ApurtureSci

The Beretta open top slide might have inspired that design feature of the P38, but the P38s DA/SA trigger with decocker and the locking wedge very much inspired the 1951 and later Berettas. Overall, the P38 inspired far more important design features in later pistols then the earlier Berettas ever did, an open top slide really isn't a particularly important or useful feature.

Small correction, the Beretta 92 (M9 is only the US military designation) was inspired by the Beretta model 51, which was an improvement and enlargement of the Beretta 34 (dimensions and caliber 9x17 to 9x19/21) which came out before the P38. The P38 has it's own spring recoiling system, very different from Beretta 92, 51, and 34. They are similar only for the complete opening of the bolt castle.
@Gunstorian
@Gunstorian Жыл бұрын
Appreciate the correction, Beretta has certainly stayed on theme with their designs. Especially the open slide design, ever since the Model of 1915 The P.38 was a trendsetting pistol in 9x19mm DA/SA, and Beretta did not incorporate DA/SA until their 92 model. In the P.38 if you look at the DA/SA action, decocker built into the safety and most importantly the "dropping block" recoil system. Which was used 1st in the Model 51 and then the Model 92. All the above mentioned features of the P.38 are quite similar to the 92, or as you correctly stated the military designation, the M9.

Walther and Beretta make great guns . The barrel isn't loose making it way more accurate than almost all semi auto pistols
