Best Long Range Calibers in 2024 [We've Tested Them All]

I have been in a 1000 yard benchrest club for 15 years and have tried a few cartridges. I have won more medals with my 300 weatherby than anything else, however the 300 win mag is good. A lot of shooters use 284 win and 7mm rem mag. As far as 6.5, the 6.5 -284 was popular but shooters have moved to the full size .284. I have tried the 6.5-284 and the 6.5-06 with some success. I think the 300-6.5 weatherby would be unbeatable with a 156 grain projectile, but the barrel life would be so short, that it would be impractible for competition shooting. If you want any barrel life out of a 6.5 you need something with the powder capacity of a .260 rem, of course a creedmore would fall into that capacity even 6.5-284s burn out too quickly. The 7mm rem mag is accurate and performs well at long range. I have found that I get more rounds out of a 300 weatherby, than I do out of any 7mm except the .284 win. The larger calibers have better barrel life, but more recoil, which affects accuracy. Any caliber with a really big case will burn barrels. For hunting I would look at the 300 or 338 Norma or many of the smaller calibers as barrel life is not such an issue with hunting. I like the weatherby case, but the new norma cases are probably better.

Shooting a 6.5-300 Wby myself, its a cool flat shooting hunting cartridge with reasonable bullet weights for the game I hunt (120-160 grains, 156 gr Berger is amazing at 3000 fps), but you cant have a list like this without the PRCs, the 300PRC should top this imho, followed by 7 PRC.

I have 2 Christensen mesas in 28 nos for elk hunting in rocky mountains every year i leave my 300 R.U.M. in the safe due to recoil and no brake on rem. 700 300 r.u.m

@@michaelcarbis2286 not when both are optimized, it is correct to say there are loads in the 300 prc that will outshoot some 338L loads at extreme range but if the 338L is optimized it will outperform the 300 prc. so will the 300 norma, so will optimized 300 ultramags or 30-378 shooting 245/250's. the 300 prc isn't the top of the heap in any way. good cartridge but not the top.

I have a 6.5-300 wtby mag. It’s a laser beam to 500 yards. One thing I don’t like about it is, how much damage it still does at that range. Real deadly this cartridge. Used on Alaskan Caribou

😂 Why Would You Say That If You Have "Tested Them All"??? None The Less, I Have (Own) 2 Cartridge That Can Smoke Anything On Your List! The 308 Lazzeroni Warbird and the "Thor's Hammer" (A 408 Cheytac Necked Down to 30 Caliber)! Both the 408 Cheytac and the 375 Cheytac are also excellent Long Range cartridges and their is Also a "Improved Version" of the 338 Lapua Magnum (XC version)! I COULD GO ON, BUT YOUR LIST IS "LACKING" For The Best Long Range Cartridges! 🤷‍♂️ Sorry, But Only the 338 Lapua Magnum Would Even Make A Real Top 10 List (And I've owned one of those too)! 😳

280ai will not out perform a 7mm rem mag in any way.

The 280 Ackley does not have the case capacity of the 7mm rem mag, so the rem mag will be faster, however the 280 Ackley will still work well and have a longer barrel life. Both are good guns, however I prefer the .30 and .338 calibers.
