The weight has to be lower than metal. That means you can practice with it much longer. The material it is made from is bound to provide extra harmonics due to the slight vibration. It really does sound better to me. Violins and other string instruments do sound better for the same reason. The modern renaissance started when somebody thought and then realized that the masters of creating the Stradivarius, Guarneri, and Amatise violins did not have kiln dried lumber. Most likely the wood traveled by boat and was doused in seawater and then air dried at the end of the voyage. There were miniscule holes in the wood at the end. So modern violin makers started doing the same thing. It must have worked. To my wondering eyes Itzhak Perlman was at the SLC violin making shop to get violins for his orchestral members. Now if you could do something similar with synthetic materials for a flute? Contact Sherry and see if you can learn something.

Sherry replied but I had KZbin kill my comment when I edited it. She said "Yes it does weigh less! I like to stand when I perform and I have no trouble doing that with these bass flutes." The copy of her comment stayed under my bell so I resurrected it. What was the chance of seeing Perlman? Even though he stayed at the violin makers shop most of the day? I have all of the first level graduate Mathematics classes in Statistics as part of my Mathematics degree. I also took all of the graduate level Statistics classes from the Psychology department - ANOVA, MANOVA, ANCOVA, ... I also took the graduate level engineering class in Statistics - Weibull, Expoential, ...My chances probably cannot be computed but they are slim even though Perlman made several trips to the Violin making shop. I had totally forgot about this. Weibull - metal. Exponential - electronics. A transistor that has run for thousands of hours has the same probability of failure it had when it was brand new. Memoryless - it is because the derivative of e^x is e^x and that therefore the integral of e^x is thus e^x (The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus). Nothing else has that property. It is lighter weight with the grenaditte at 44oz and new voice at 35 oz.
