Looks like the game got updated to version 1.04. This changed a bunch of subtle things, but also added some huge new things like a different option loadout and the Very Hard difficulty.

Honestly I'm resigned to this likely fate. Gradius ReBirth apparently didn't sell too hot so Konami retired the series, it wasn't really relevant to most gamers anymore compared to their other franchises (hence the meme about Gradius pros all being elderly players, because younger generations of gamers see any interst in this compared to eye-candy bullet hell games). They did make the Otomedius spin-offs but it seems those weren't major sellers either. Then there is the Gradius slot spin-off in 2011. Whether this was a foreshadowing of things to come is up to interpretation.

I think V really modernize Gradius quite well without going the fanmade-like kaizo quality like this one. The only thing missing is the Moais and stages diversity.
