I just watched this. God I think I'm gonna cry, it was just too good. :'( I honestly had a hard time watching this at first cause of how I'm a realist, but goddamn it was so worth it forcing my way through it cause it got so damn good. To people watching this for the first time: don't let the first few eps discourage you from watching this masterpiece! Once you are able to accept the over-the-top action and logic defying scenes of this anime and learn to understand its core themes of persistence and going against odds despite everyone saying it's impossible, you WILL love this anime.

One must remember that Kamina was just flamboyant. He said it himself. He was no one, he was scared. The only thing that kept him from keeping his friends from being crushed was that he saw Simon diligently digging that spurned him on to tell them "keep digging." They weren't one or the other. They were the best tag-team ever. What Simon lacked, Kamina made up for and pushed him on as he pushed him.

A couple interesting things I just noticed about the final episode after going back and watching it again just now. And bear in mind that these are purely my own observations and nothing more. Also SPOILERS: #1: The Anti-Spiral is a total hypocrite. What I mean is simple, at the tail end of the fight, the Anti-Spiral unleashes what may as well be a Big Bang right into Gurren Lagann's face. After this happens, Lord Genome, the revived (and I would like to mention, TOTALLY BADASS) Spiral King pulls some crazy shenanigans and basically converts the power of the CREATION OF THE UNIVERSE into usable Spiral Energy for Gurren Lagann. GL then busts out it's trademarked Drill and proceeds to kick ass. But, what I noticed, is that the weapons that the Anti-Spiral produces to try and counter GL's Drill, begin to look an awful lot like spiral drills themselves, especially as the little mini brawl comes to it's conclusion. What this says to me is that in the final moments of the fight, it was the ANTI-SPIRAL (A being who's M.O. Was crushing the spirits and fighting willpower of it's enemies.) Actually realized that it couldn't win without the Powers of the Spiral that had laid dormant for countless thousands, if not millions of years. And so, in the final moments of it's existence, it attempted to reactivate it's own Spiral Power so that it could stand a hope of a chance of victory And #2: Gurren Lagann uses it's original finisher in the Grand Finale of the entire series. This one is also pretty simple, the original Finisher move that the Gurren Lagann combination created was the: "Certain Kill: Perfect Combination of a Man's Soul, Cannonball Attack."(Holy cripes that's a mouthful. I can see why it got shortened to "Lagann Impact") An attack in which Kamina and his Gurren literally picked up Simon and his Lagann, and hurled them at the target. And what was the final assault on the Anti-Spiral? Viral ripping the Lagann off of the combination and hurling him towards their foe as hard as he possibly could. An almost perfectly replicated application of the CK:PCMSCA.

When I read the Netflix description of the episode where Kittan dies, I just knew he was going to go. Kittan grows a lot as a character, from an arrogant blowhard to a man with a true personality of his own. When he kissed Yoko, I just sat down on my bed and resigned myself to the fact that my favorite character was going to die. Then, in the ultimate of example of his character, he jumped into that void and used Giga Drill Break. I watched him evaporate into dust and knew with bittersweet sadness that this was what he had to do. He was my favorite character, but I'm not sad that he died, because his was one of the few TV sacrifices I've seen that I felt truly meant something. Thanks for reading this.

I completely agree. The show was absolutely fantastic and a blast to watch. I loved almost every second of it and would definitely watch it again. It was only the last 5 minutes or so that I didn't enjoy. I'd still wholeheartedly recommend the show to friends, I would just need to tell them to prepare themselves for that ending because if you're not ready for it, it can really ruin the mood.

This song summarizes the show: the beginning is a facade so it’s not very deep, the middle is depressing and it becomes strong, the 2nd half is pure power and is the hope and strength of the characters but it keeps the depressing part showing the turmoil that occurrs like the death of multiple characters.

It'd be awesome if they did a reboot of the show. About twice as many episodes, so they can /really/ flesh out the side-characters, and maybe polish up some of the animation and stuff too. There are some really cool TTGL side-characters that I'd love to see more of/get to know, like Jorgun and Balunbow, Iraak, Makken, and others. The characters are just too well designed and awesome to go unnoticed in the show like they do. Gurren Lagann is the only show I can think of where filler episodes would actually be a good idea.

My favorit time this plays, is lordgenomes backstory, Forced to kill his allys after he was shown absolite dispair, he created cathedrial lazengan using it to dominate earth. This in the end prolonged humanity, and gave birth to simon. In the end the spiral warrior fought with simon giving his life for all spiral lifeforms.

Kamina was his own man, but confidence without substance is just as half fulfilled as substance without confidence. Its not so much that all Kamina could do was talk, is that no one else could talk because they didn't have confidence. Its a man that can place an all-in on nothing but faith that gathers others to his side when they succeed. It sounds like a braindead gamble, but sometimes the impossible is possible ONLY if you all-in on faith alone. That is Kamina's lesson. That if you're facing impossible odds, then all you can do is all-in, its when you're most empowered to do so. For instance, once they made civilization, you could immediately tell overcoming the odds was no longer necessary, so much like soldiers after the war, there was no place for team gurren to truly be of use. That why those who are fearful and pessimistic start making hard decision with shut-off hearts in order to manage order and prosperity, and lastly survival. Its when you combine both edges of that drill of human progress, the boundless will and confidence of someone all-in'ing on faith, and bind it to the fearful realist just trying their best, humble and realistic to the likelihood of death and failure, that you make a drill that can move forward. The substance and recognition of reality and stakes to motivate rather than a nihilist excuse to give up; the baseless confidence to tip the scale rather than acceptance of impossible odds; the willingness to go all-in because of the stakes; and the ability to have confidence because you know your confidence is the ingredient that can tip the scale objectively. Its the swirling positive and negative space of a drill bit slowly turning being swirling forward, giving confidence to the meek, and strength to the idealist, little by little they move forward. THAT'S HOW A DRILL WORKS! Kamina was confidence without substance, but in his final moments he realized that Simon just needed to believe in himself, rather than rely on him, because simon already was more capable than Kamina ever was. Simon was substance without confidence, but when he finally had something to fight for without Kamina to give him his confidence, he found some of his own, because Kamina taught him that you can tip the scales with self-belief. Its in this that they were able to drill a path for humanity. However, when they were no longer needed and the odds were no longer impossible, Simon's specific capability was no longer the half of the drill they needed. Instead a more calculating, scientific, and down to earth mind was needed, one that could slowly make progress in more sophisticated ways rather than by brute force. That why Rossiu became the new leader, the new confidence lacker and realist, to the now confident Simon. But this time instead of proving that reality catches up with you, and you die for it, but your confidence can tip the scales, as Kamina passed on to Simon. Instead Simon learns that his drill is made for battle, and he has to rely on others and their drills for other tasks, that reality demands a cost in exchange for breaking through impossible odds. That Rossiu was right, that the cost of doing the impossible is the lives of hero's giving themselves for the cause along the way, that there is grace in accepting the sacrifice so long as you never waver in making it count nor accept it as the best solution. This lesson was the confidence to demand greater humanity in their decisions for Rossiu, and the acceptance costs for Simon. That the balance of a universe shaking drill is the sacrifice of those gone, and the substance and weight it brings, just as much as the dreams and aspiration of those that remain, and continue to push forward, and the power and momentum encompassed. And is again that these two spirals pave the way. That the impossibility destroying drill is honoring the past while moving forward, carrying that weight and momentum with every turn of the clock, and progressing little by little, just as much as it is the traditional wellspring of power and motivation that wins a battle when its all on the line. But Simon's lessons all lead to a tragic and beautiful solution. Be the legend, the beacon of humanity, the unforgotten myth that guides by example like Kamina did before him, to be the confidence half of the bit that touches as the walls of possibility whenever a warrior is not needed. He lost his love 'because there is only one point at the tip of the drill', to be alone at the top is to accept your burden as the embodiment of progress. That there must be a story passed on, pristine and unaltered, a mold of what it takes to rise when all the odds say death; So he goes into seclusion, waiting, a silent guardian to reawaken when he is needed, or just as likely fade away leaving behind the prestige of his tale and lessons. This myth, this legend, this story, this tale, its a simple one that we got to watch from start to finish, The Story of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, of Team Dai Gurren, Team Gurren, Kamina and Simon, and finally just Simon. It's the story of, that which can overcome anything, while still accepting the reality of the cost. That being at the tip is to be alone, wise, capable, graceful and self-sacrifical. Accepting the cost of progress, and carrying the weight of responsibility without qualms, merely cherishing and watching over the next generation that lives to continue drilling forward. That's how a drill works.
